Description

"An aspiring young chef discovers her innate resourcefulness and the courage of her convictions…Hints of superhero identity lurk throughout this textured graphic novel filled with heart and humor, centering girls with budding ambitions, subverting tropes, and celebrating everyday heroes…Word to the wise: Readers should not pick up this book while hungry unless they have treats nearby such as Taiwanese minced pork over rice, or at least a bubble tea to go with that pineapple cake and zucchini chocolate cookie…Bold and nuanced, this intercultural 'cook book' dishes up hearty morsels well worth savoring." — Kirkus Reviews “This is a lively graphic novel about a girl finding her way in a new country where her identity is persistently misunderstood…an important reminder of connection between loved ones in cooking as in life…" — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books "Cici is a plucky, bighearted protagonist, tackling head-on the many challenges her new circumstances throw at her, such as coping with a steady barrage of microaggressions, trying to fit in, and finding a way to reconcile the demands of American kid-hood with her parents’ hopes and expectations. Bright, full-color illustrations bring the story to life...Purchase wherever feel-good family stories are in demand, and recommend especially to readers who love cooking-filled comics." — School Library Journal “This sweet, family-oriented graphic novel celebrates cultural traditions and new beginnings in equal measure...First-time author LaMotte brings an obvious love of food and cooking to a positive story that aspiring young chefs will devour. Xu’s manga-influenced full-color illustrations set a gentle tone to this highly appealing story of new beginnings.” — Booklist “LaMotte’s accessible writing resonates in sketching a diaspora experience and Xu’s simple, inviting illustrations will charm young readers… in LaMotte and Xu’s capable hands, the result is heartwarming fare that will appeal to all.” — Publishers Weekly “The increasingly suspenseful elimination rounds of the contest give this funny, fast-paced narrative its dramatic arc. And the graphic novel format, featuring Xu’s big-eyed characters, clean lines and simple, playful aesthetic, is a perfect vehicle, allowing readers to see for themselves what Cici’s creative rice dishes look like….The happy ending, meanwhile, is as satisfying as a juicy dumpling.” — New York Times Book Review “Measuring Up…can be a useful tool for parents and guardians to teach their tweens to honor their cultural heritage and to find the courage to be unique.”xa0 — Mochi Magazine Lily LaMotte graduated from Hamline’s Writing for Children and Young Adults program with an MFA. Second grader loves this book

My second grade daughter has read this book about 5-6 times since receiving it a week ago. It's her first graphic novel, but she has no trouble picking up the format. I appreciate that the plot introduced her to another culture and has her interested in cooking.

My 10 YO Daughter LOVES this book!

This book is excellent! My daughter is half Asian and half Caucasian, so I try to find books by authors with all kinds of backgrounds and world views. This book's themes include some universal ones -- self-awareness, an adolescent's desire to "fit in," and the special bond between grandmothers and granddaughters -- as well as those not typically found in middle grade books such as the immigrant experience and cultural identity. The quality of the writing and illustrations in Measuring Up are outstanding. Can't wait to see what this talented author and illustrator come out with next!

This book teaches me so much!

Second grade here. I loved this book! It is about a Taiwanese girl who is paired with an Italian girl at a cooking contest 🍕. She keeps treating the Taiwanese girl like she didn't know anything. Of course, everyone knows something. That's what's so special about everyone. Find out what happens in the story!!!!!!!

Family fun with a cooking surprise!

Although not a fan of graphic novels, Lily LaMotte and Ann Xu won me over from their punny title to the perfect MG story of fitting in and holding onto your own culture and beliefs. The cooking contest scenes are exactly as I remember watching on TV. Middle Grade readers will be tempted by the food introduced in the perfect panels these two creatives concocted for us. The theme of friendship is subtle and authentic with no preaching. Adults will enjoy this graphic novel MEASURING UP, too. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next, either in the kitchen or on the pages of her second novel.

Fantastic!

I got this book for my second graders. They immediately gobbled it up and kept re-reading it. This week I finally got around to read-aloud the book them - Wow, wow, wow. I love this book so much. The storyline is great for audience of all ages, and a terrific book for parents to read-aloud to younger audience, as there are some more advanced words and expressions to explain. If your kids enjoy cooking shows like "Chopped", they will love this book! If your kids have no interest in food or cooking, read this to them and you may get them interested!

Beyond all the cooking fun, it's just a wonderful, positive story about family, friendship, perseverance, and diversity. Don't miss it!!

A beautiful story about the immigrant experience, filled with heart and hope.

A beautiful story about the immigrant experience, filled with heart and hope. Perfect for budding chefs or for those wanting a story of friendship and family and culture. The generational conflict is what many immigrant families can relate to. It blends culture in so many different ways and shows how food really is the language of the world.

We really liked this one

Got this for my 8yr old son who is trying to complete a school reading list. It is comic style which is different for us. He was excited and had a great time with it. We breezed through it in two nights but it touched on some great topics. I could tell my son could resonate with several parts where others may think you live differently but we are really all more alike than we thought. Would recommend.
