"...combines science, paranormal romance, and timely ethical debates within a compelling teen world... Romantic, mysterious, and exciting, Mindspeak by Heather Sunseri is a debut that delivers on every level." - USA Today Heather Sunseri was raised on a tiny farm in one of the smallest towns in thoroughbred horse country near Lexington, Kentucky. After high school, she attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and later graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in accounting. Always torn between a passion for fantasy and a mind for the rational, it only made sense to combine her career in accounting with a novel-writing dream. Heather now lives in a different small town on the other side of Lexington with her two children, and her husband, Mike, the biggest Oregon Duck fan in the universe. When she's not writing or working as a CPA, she spends her time tormenting her daughter's cat, Olivia, and loving on her son's Golden Retriever, Jenny. MINDSPEAK is her first published novel.

Features & Highlights

  • She was created for a purpose so revolutionary, someone was willing to kill for it. Seventeen-year-old Lexi Matthews keeps two secrets from her elite boarding school classmates—she’s the daughter of a famous and controversial geneticist, and she can influence people’s thoughts. But after new student Jack DeWeese heals her broken arm with an anything-but-simple touch, he forces Lexi to face a new reality—her abilities reach much further than speaking to the minds of others. After Lexi’s father goes missing and she receives threatening emails, she can’t decide whether to fall into Jack’s arms or run and hide. As Lexi seeks answers to what she and Jack are, she discovers a truth more unsettling than anything her science books can teach. And letting Jack into her life of secrets is not only a threat to her very existence, but it just might break her heart wide open.

An Honest Review

Well I have to say this book has a variety of highs and lows. It started out as a page turner and kept my attention at first but, it was such a long and dragging book that I have to say giving it 4 stars was being generous. I liked the charachters and the idea the book was based on but gee wiz GET TO THE POINT!!!! It lingers expecially when it comes to topics such as who killed my Dad and will she just fall for him and stop playing hard to get, so we can get on with the story. It does finally seem to speed up toward the end and then BLAM! Nothing. I was praying that the book would give a satisfying wrap up of all the events within its pages but, NO. I guess there is a part 2. I just hope that it is not as long as this one. Some great points to the book is that it has a few suprises and is suspenseful.

Be Forewarned: There Is No Ending to This Book

The concept was good, but I felt it was dragged out way too long and then it didn't end. We have to buy the next book to find out what happens, if indeed we ever find out. I understand sequels, but the book just leaves us hanging with yet another problem to figure out. I don't mean it ends and THEN another problem appears as a teaser. Reading this book is like picking up a book and reading half of it and never knowing where it goes.

And poor Lexi gets information in bits and pieces from others, who seem to know everything. Lexi knows what she has to do, then doesn't know, then knows again, etc. She acts like a powerful, strong, intelligent girl who does her own thing (mainly rebelling), but then she always clings to her boyfriend for salvation while doing utterly stupid things to get herself in trouble. And, apparently, the city of Lexington (where I live) has no police officer or governing authority that these kids could call for help.

Still, the book kept my interest and was technically well written. And, honestly, if it had ended, I would have overlooked some of the other problems. I felt tricked. The book doesn't say it's volume 1, and it seems I should have been notified somehow that I had to have the other books if I wanted to enjoy the experience. But, oh well, I got it at Goodwill for fifty cents. I also got Mindsiege, which is the second in the series; but I see there is a third, so I'm guessing if I read the second one I'll still have no idea how the story ends.

Fresh and Surprising

I won a digital edition of MindSpeak from the author. I seldom write reviews, but this story was so fresh that I was compelled to tell about it. The author launched her story from the point where real news about cloning ends and my personal feelings and questions about the future begin. Each chapter surprised me with intriguing characters and plot twists as the story developed my sympathy for Lexi's struggle. Ms. Sunseri also did a fine job of setting up the next volume of a series.

Not impressed at all. Wish I didn't waste my time

I really wanted to love this book. The synopsis hooks you but when I started to read, I was disappointed. It didn't hook me in and make me lose sleep like a good book does. It's about to be 2 weeks and I all haven't finished it because I put it down a lot. Maybe read a chapter or two before bed but I'm sad that I'm finding myself hurrying to finish so I can read a better book. I'm not even looking forward to buying the sequels.

This book had a brilliant idea but the story and plot dragged on and on. I felt like it could have been shortened by cutting out a loot of unnecessary chapters that did nothing for the book. I don't feel the chemistry or love between Jack and Lexi. It feels so forced like watching a bad play. Very mechanic.

Excellent start to the Mindspeak series

Lexi has always known she is different. She can use her mind to influence the actions and words of other people after all. But, she doesn’t know just how different she is until, at 17, she meets Jack and learns they are both genetically engineered clones. After her father is killed when his car is bombed, everyone seems to want to find his journals and kill off Lexi, too.

Mindspeak by Heather Sunseri is the first book in the Mindspeak series. Once I got to about 2/3 of the way through it, I literally could not put it down (who needs sleep!). Sometimes as I read I found myself breathless with worry over what was going to happen next because I really started caring about what happened to these fictional people. I’ll be moving on to the second book soon for sure. A truly excellent book with a pretty unique storyline. I recommend it to teens as well as adults who love to read young adult books.

just enjoy the journey

I am a true to the heart fan of horror, but Mindspeak was definitely a refreshing change. Although written for young adults ,I found that the story line, plot pace and characters held my attention and was very entertaining. Another reviewer stated that the main character at some time during the story to lost some of her original fire and self assurance. I felt as though that was what made the character that much more believable and endearing. She does have a level of vulnerability that makes her "human". I say done analyze, just enjoy the journey.

Paranormal, action packed but with cliffhanger

This is an excellent, action packed book in which the pages seem to turn themselves. The main characters of this book are teenagers, but I would not consider it as only a young adult book. The intriguing plot and well developed characters offer something for readers of all ages.

I was disappointed with the use of curse words, they were not needed. I was also disappointed with the ending, as there was no closure. I understand this is the first book in a series, but I prefer some closure. I would have given this book five stars but for these two points.

Controversial, emotional, and with a solid plot

The premise of this story is hugely controversial and the plot does justice to it emotionally. I had to concentrate to try to understand the science end of things until closer to the end, where things become much clearer. And the emotion bounced around a bit, but that is more right than wrong for the age group, I think. Sorry, not trying to offend teenagers. :) Anyhow, the relationship between Lexi and Jack reminded me of the Divergent relationship. I had thought that I wasn’t completely into this story until, with about 20% to go, my husband played a joke on me while I was reading and scared the living daylights out of me. I darn near had a heart attack, he scared me so bad. So yeah, I’d say I got deep into the characters and story. :) Enough that I would recommend this read and to say I’ve already loaded up Mindsiege to read next.
