Description

(starred review) Robert Munsch has done it again--with a simple story full of exaggeration and repetition sure to delight many youngsters. The action centres on Moira's sixth birthday party. he wants to invite all the children in her school to her party (typical six-year-old), but her parents have limited the number of guests to six (typical parents!). The ludicrous possibility becomes reality when hundreds of boys and girls show up at the party. The children's excitement and enjoyment increase, as does the parents' dismay. Finally, when even Moira appears daunted by the huge pile of presents, she has a great idea--every kid who helps tidy the mess they have created gets a present. In five minutes, the job is done and the exhausted parents watch hundreds of children file out of the house. But the peace is short lived. As the last child leaves, two trucks arrive with 190 pizzas and 190 birthday cakes, the rest of the order that was placed at the hectic height of the party. The reader can just about turn back to the beginning for the solution to that one! (Patricia Fry Canadian Materials ) Robert Munsch is the author of more than 25 books for children including The Paper Bag Princes and Stephanie's Ponytail. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and studied to be a Jesuit priest before deciding to work with children instead. He taught in a variety of nursery schools and daycare centers while he earned an MA in Early Childhood Education. In 1975, Munsch and his wife, Ann, moved to Guelph, Ontario. The Munschs have three children: Julie, Andrew, and Tyya (see them all in Something Good! ). Michael Martchenko has illustrated over 30 books for children and has exhibited his work throughout North America. He has won numerous awards for design and illustration. He lives with his wife, Patricia, in Toronto.

I was scammed

I am absolutely furious at the book I received. Not because of the story-Robert Munsch is absolutely one of the funniest children's author. I am a teacher, preparing to teach an author study. I spent my own money buying many of his books so my students can be exposed to many of his stories. I have 13 books that are ABSOLUTELY USELESS, being that their size is 2"x2". I can't very well read a book that small to my class as a whole and they are too tiny for partner reading. I feel completely scammed and am ready to stop using Amazon all together. There was no description that I could find to alert me of the fact that I was about to waste my money on tiny books.

Moira's Birthday: A Teacher's Review

Moira wants to have a birthday party at her house, and despite her parent's orders, she invites the entire school to her house for the event. This is the basic, charming, and wonderfully funny Robert Munsch story perfect for grades K - 5.

Moira's birthday party is one of confusion and chaos, with swarms of kids everywhere in the house. Worried that they cannot feed all of them, Moira orders 200 birthday cakes and pizzas from local businesses to solve the problem. Worried about the mess, Moira offers her presents as bribes.

While utterly silly, children relate to the story because of the presents and the birthday cakes. I've read this story aloud in all grade levels, and even the older kids get a giggle from this one.

For teachers (and parents wanting activities, here are a couple of ideas:

1) Munsch's books are great for studying cause and effect. Have the kids note Moira's attempts to solve the problems, and the result of her solutions.

2) Estimate how much food everyone in the school would eat if they came to a birthday party. Check with the cafeteria to see if the classes numbers match up!

3) At the end of the story, Moira has a "normal" party. Have kids describe that party, and compare/contrast it with the first one.

4) Have groups of students plan a party for Moira. Who would be invited? What would they eat? Come up with a plan for the party, and a budget for the cost.

I highly recommend "Moira's Birthday" as a fun, engaging read!

My Moira Approves!

I have a Moira at home who was THRILLED at this silly and sweet book about a girl with the same name as her who plans a crazy birthday party. We love Munsch's books in our house and this one does not disappoint. Great read-aloud book for preschool age kids. My 3 and 5 year olds both asked to hear it twice at bedtime tonight.
