Description

A Kirkus Indie Book of the Month for July"Castle's characters brim with zest and real feeling... Though the plot keeps the pages turning, the characters, major and minor, and the well-wrought historical details will make readers want to linger in the 16th century. A laugh-out loud mystery that will delight fans of the genre." xa0xa0 xa0-- Kirkus, starred review "Murder by Misrule is a delightful debut with characters that leap off the page, especially the brilliant if unwilling detective Francis Bacon and his street smart man Tom Clarady. Elizabeth Tudor rules, but Anna Castle triumphs."xa0xa0 xa0-- Karen Harper, NY Times best-selling author of The Queen's Governess "Well-researched... Murder by Misrule is also enormously entertaining; a mystery shot through with a series of misadventures, misunderstandings, and mendacity worthy of a Shakespearian comedy."xa0xa0 xa0-- M. Louisa Locke, author of the Victorian San Francisco Mystery Series "Castle's period research is thorough but unobtrusive, and her delight in the clashing personalities of her crime-fighting duo is palpable: this is the winning fictional odd couple of the year, with Bacon's near-omniscience being effectively grounded by Clarady's street smarts. The book builds effectively to its climax, and a last-minute revelation that is particularly well-handled, but readers will most appreciate the wry humor. An extremely promising debut."xa0xa0 xa0--- Steve Donoghue, Historical Novel Society "Historical mystery readers take note: Murder by Misrule is a wonderful example of Elizabethan times brought to life...a blend of Sherlock Holmes and history." xa0xa0 xa0-- - D. Clever plot twists keep things moving

In my mind, any book that can make me forget I’m on the treadmill gets my vote! And that’s what happened to me while reading Murder by Misrule. This book moves along so quickly that I lost track of time. Although the novel is about the Elizabethan Francis Bacon, who is well into his career in law but must solve a murder to get back into his uncle's—and the queen’s—good graces, some of the secondary characters steal the show. But that’s ok; there’s enough interest to go around. Francis has the brains and cleverness to solve the mystery, but he is impatient to move on to other things and delegates the snooping around to the youngsters he is tutoring. One of them, Tom Clarady, is more than willing to chase down the lovely portraitist who presumably witnessed the original murder, but he nearly gets the poor girl killed in the process. Francis almost gets himself killed as well, which is when he decided to solve the murder, which had grown into multiple killings. It’s all very clever and sets the stage for a lively series. Mysteries are not my forté, but I had no problem sinking my teeth into this one.

Learned yet fun

It perhaps helped me that I was in hospital when I read this book, which stay gave me a full day in which to read the book, interrupted only by occasional checks on my vital signs. Knowing a bit about the legal culture of 16th-17th century England, I was impressed by the author's knowledge of its institutions, culture and characters, as well as of its specialized jargon.

If my nurses had known that my heart beat faster whenever Ben made his appearance, they would have wrested it away from me.

Thrilling

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I loved this book. I’m not a huge history buff kind of person but I loved hearing at the end how she tied in some real events into her mystery.
I love the culture and lifestyle that you are introduced to. It’s really eye opening. Like I said I’m not a history buff kind of person but I do love learning about historical things in a fun and engaging manner.
The beginning of the book was a little hard to follow but I listened to it a couple times and once I had a handle on the characters and the setting I could easily follow along.
This is a crazy turned into serial killer. I love the speculation towards the end that suggests the murder is the same person even though all the murders are different and seem unconnected. The idea that some one could accidentally kill someone and think they got away with it motivated them to continue killing. That was a great twist. There’s a few other twists that you don’t expect and I won’t give those away.
All in all this is a good murder mystery. I loved it. If you like Francis bacon and London and some history this is a book for you.

A Great Historic Mystery Series

I read a lot of historical mysteries. This series, set in Elizabethan England, and staring Francis Bacon and his legal students at Gray's Inn is an interesting twist, and Anna Castle makes the most of the idea with great, fast paced writing and a complex human dimension to the cases. I read the entire series and now eagerly await more.

I'm hooked

This is the kind of book I try to read more slowly because I don't want it to end. I knew very little about 16th century England, but Castle's fabulous descriptions of the clothes, food, activities drew me in and made me feel like I was there. The story is fun and fast-paced, the characters life-like. I'm hooked. I'll be reading the other books in the series!
