Offensive

I don't normally review, but I felt I needed to say something. I originally got this book because I thought it was taking place in France not Atlanta. I was sort of enjoying the book, it wasn't the greatest I've read but I figured I could finish it. I think I got to chapter 9 when I was immediately taken aback by the way the cook/chef was portrayed. I find it very offensive that everyone that was white in the house spoke correct English, however, the black cook spoke ignorantly "havin' and livin'"...I was not impressed. I will not finish the book or by others. I'm glad this book was free.

Needs More Work

I stopped reading this book on my Kindle at 31%, which is about page 119.
At first I thought the book was just slow to start. The book began with the main characters Maggie venturing to Cannes in the hopes of rescuing her (5 or 6 year old, the book listed different ages for her) niece from her rough French father. Her mother, Maggie's sister, was missing after getting involved with drugs. A British man stole the girl for Maggie and snuck them out of the country. Then we follow Maggie at home in Atlanta in her job for awhile. Suddenly, the evil French man shows up to blackmail Maggie and returns Maggie's sister, Elise, in bad shape.
Elise begs Maggie not to tell their parents but to give her a few days to get cleaned up. She tells Maggie about the violence she endured at her Frenchman's hands. Then she informs Maggie that she will need to score some crack soon to keep it together.
The next day, Maggie goes to work, which seems weird. Her sister was missing, presumed dead, shows up strung out and hooked on drugs, so Maggie goes into work at her advertising agency.
That day, Elise is killed. Does Maggie tell the police that her sister was a crack addict and she may have let a drug dealer into the house? Does Maggie tell the police that Elise lived with a violent man who dumped her in a parking lot the night before? No, Maggie says her sister had been living in France; that she was an artist.
Not only does Maggie not tell the police, she is dishonest with her best friend and family; her inner dialogue doesn't indicate that she thinks this should be an issue at all.
Since I'm only 119 pages into the book, I'm going to hope I haven't given away any spoilers.
I generally like the author's writing style and think the book could have benefited from some editing to streamline it and then just some honest reflection on what each character knows or should know.

Not worth the trouble...

I found this book to be slow at times, and there were not many characters in it that I liked. Come to think of it, I didn't care about a single one of them. Moreover, all the French characters were reduced to ridiculous clichés and insipid dialogue(I know several French people and not one of them refers to themselves in the third person). If you have any grasp of French at all, it will drive you crazy that even the French characters do not speak their own language well. The plot itself was about what you would expect of a mystery of this genre: it is not heavy reading, and I was looking for something of a "beach read". In the end, it is rather a silly story, but I could have overlooked that if it wasn't so irritating in so many ways. Obviously, no one edited this book because it is full of errors and inconsistencies, but if none of the above bother you, then read away. As for me, I will be avoiding any future books by this writer.

Murder where?

The setting is mostly in Atlanta so the title is a bit misleading. I skimmed through most of the dialogue and was still able to keep up. Kept wondering why there were all the subplots (with not one well-developed), which turned out to be necessary because of the resolution. Find an unhappy ad executive, a drug-addicted pimp, conman and women who should know better characters hard to relate to. Was a free read so not a total waste of time but am not interested enough to read any more in the series.

Protagonist is a fool

It’s hard to believe that that Maggie Newberry is so naïve as to not have seen she was walking into a trap immediately. The fact her father did not realize he was being scammed from the start is unbelievable.

Then the plot drags and drags for 200 pages and Maggie is too stupid to see that Laurent is a part of the scam is absolutely mind boggling !

I have a degree in French and there are several mistakes in the spelling of French words : Clignancourt NOT Clingnancourt!

And you can refer to a baguette as simply a baguette NOT baguette bread.
Hard to see that the author ever lived in France.

I won’t be reading anymore from this author

Not worth the time or money

I got to chapter 3 before I stopped reading. I kept hoping it would get better. There were so many inconsistencies. I mean did they find out about the niece a year ago or 4 days ago? And the sister got pregnant 3 years ago but the niece is 5? How does that work? Also, although it was billed a “clean read”, there was sex by chapter 2. Don’t waste your money.

Forgettable

Actually, I mixed up the review of this book with another book in this series, with Murder in Aix. Shows you how forgettable these books are. It's a good thing I'm stubborn or I wouldn't have bothered finishing the book at all. But I've invested good money, so I'll trudge forward till bitter end.

Not for me.

I think I got through maybe 30 pages before I stopped reading. The characters are presented stereotypically. They are stupid & do stupid things.
