Description

Moving to Alaska is a lifelong dream of many people. Bob and his wife are two people who acted on their dream. Bob's life experiences are interesting and varied: running a trapline and panning for gold, learning to fly a 1960 Super Cub, building his own muzzleloaders, surviving several near-death experiences and shooting an aggressive grizzly bear on his front porch. Bob lives in his log cabin on the East Fork of Dry Creek in the Interior of Alaska with his wife Betty and their Australian Shepherd, Blue. Bob is 88 years old and has lived in the Alaskan bush in the same cabin he and his family built with their own hands more than 40 years ago. Since his cabin has no running water, he and his 83-year-old wife Betty use an outhouse to this day (even when it's negative 60 degrees outside). Bob and Betty are well-known and loved throughout the Interior of Alaska and have many friends and family throughout the world who are buying his book and sharing it with their friends.

Features & Highlights

  • Robert Hilliker was born in the southern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, in the late 1920's, just before the Great Depression of 1929 and the 1930's. As a young boy, the tales of Daniel Boone, Jim Bowie, and the stories of the Mountain Men who roamed the great Rocky Mountains in search of beaver struck a chord deep down inside that he could neither understand nor explain. They did, however, produce in him a strong desire to experience such a life for himself. In the following years, almost every decision he made was in accordance with an "inner compass" which pointed steadily to the Northwest. "To go into the wilderness, build a strong and warm log cabin with my own two hands, and hunt for my food. Trap fur bearing animals to sell to the fur buyers for money to buy the things I couldn't produce myself, get my water from the creek, cut the firewood I would need to cook my food and to keep me warm through the long cold winters of the 'North Country,' could I do something like that?" This is his story.

Authentic Alaskan tales! 5 stars from a neighbor and a fan!

It doesn't get more authentic Alaska than this! And how do I know? Born in 1975 in Dry Creek, Alaska, (Mile 1379 on the Alcan Highway, to be exact!), I had the privilege of being neighbors "just up the creek" from Bob (Robert) and his sweet and amazing wife, Betty Hilliker! Many a night I sat around their table, listening to Bob tell these stories! As I read the tales within this book, I could almost hear his booming voice and see the twinkle in his blue eyes! I can remember him laughing so hard, he would shed tears, while telling some of these stories! This book is just great! It's fun reading, and having grown up hearing most of these stories from the mouth of the author himself, I can't describe how thoroughly I enjoyed reading it! I remember telling him he needed to write a book, so that many more could enjoy his true tales and they would not be lost with time... So glad he did! I absolutely love the book, Bob!

Fantastic Book

Oh, I really enjoyed this book. I loved that Robert included pictures of many of the things he wrote about in the book. I felt so bad for him when his trusty old mule died and you will understand if you purchase this book. I like that he included things about his family and his meager beginnings when he first got to Alaska. He built his home which he describes in the book and also provides pictures of the cabin and family. You will love this book. It's awesome!

A very honest accounting of his over forty years in the Alaskan wilderness

Robert Hilliker provides readers with a very honest accounting of his over forty years in the Alaskan wilderness. His stories are about hardships and joys, families and friends, the seasons, the scenery, and lots of hunting.
The book is more of a remembrance. It is neither profound nor great literature......and is not meant to be. Rather, it is a look at the very successful life of Hilliker and his wife Betty.
I am pleased to have read the book.

Good, easy read

By some standards this book is about urban life. But once you read it you'll realize the passion that caused the writer to get "homey" in his stories and life explanations. Good, easy read. These days are gone as Alaska has become too occupied.

This was a great book as well

This was a great book as well, Robert went through some mighty tough times and just kept on going to ensure he and his family could continue to live in a way they all come to love. When he lost his lower leg I thought he was done for sure but he just kept on plugging away and never let it slow him down. Also really enjoyed the stories of his Mule (can't remember his name but what a character he must have been!). Thanks for a great book.
