“[ND] Stevenson has a knack for capturing the humor and heart in a situation in just a few panels.” — Adelaide Advertiser “If you’re going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Sharp visuals, a nifty amalgam of fantasy and science fiction elements, and relationships drawn with complexity, wit, and depth create a world worth returning to again and again.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review) “At its core, Nimona is a story of rescue. Each of the main characters rescue allies, friendships, the Kingdom, and ultimately, themselves… A vibrant solo work.” — School Library Journal (starred review) “[Stevenson’s] voice is clear and precise, [his] drawings confident, [his] use of color growing in depth and assurance as the story progresses.” — New York Times “Nimona…is beautifully flawed and refreshingly unstereotypical in a book that is both darkly witty and surprisingly touching. And Nimona is a protagonist to both love and fear.” — The Horn Book “Over the course of the collected Nimona, it’s possible to watch artist [ND] Stevenson blossom from a student to a superstar.” — NPR.org “Nimona, with all her flaws, breaks away completely from what women are allowed to be in popular fiction.” — Vanity Fair “Graphic novel fans will finish the book in a gallop and then want to start right back at the first page.” — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review) “Awesome and adorable.” — Ryan North, author of Dinosaur Comics “Funny and vibrant, with wonderful energy in Stevenson’s illustrations and a wicked wit in [his] storytelling.” — Slate “Those of you who haven’t read Nimona yet are lucky, because you can buy the fantasy comic in book form instead of waiting for [ND] to post an update twice a week. Seriously, that wait was always excruciating.” — Kirkus Reviews Nimona is an impulsive young shape-shifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. She's reading and asking for more!!

My daughter is dyslexic. She wants to read, so much so that I've spent probably over $500 in books.

Sadly she has read only 2 books ever until now. She LOVED Nimona and read it cover to cover in one sitting. She wants the sequel. :( Sadly there isn't one yet, but I am searching for the next and excited about what I can find that's out there for her.

She has no interest in audio books though I've tried several times and she has 4 paperbacks she really wanted collecting dust too.

This is exciting...my daughter asking and reading!! Whoop Whoop!!

A Soft Light in the Darkness; Totally Heart-Warming and Thought-Provoking

Nimona was first publsihed by Stevenson herself as a webcomic, which eventually grew into this fantastic 256 page graphic novel that earned recognition for being a finalist of the National Book Award! And although the graphic novel takes its name from the it's shapeshifting female protagonist, the story is not *really* about Nimona herself. It isn't really about protagonist Ballister Blackheart, once a hero in training and now the appointed villain, or his "nemesis" and the kingdom's champion Ambrosisus Goldenloin either. Rather, the story of Nimona - at it's heart - is about more than just good versus evil but the difference between good and just, nice and right, and the importance of intention. As Blackheart, now aided by the impulsive and massively destructive Nimona, endeavors to bring the injustices of the Insitution - the kingdom's version of the State Department and Department of Defense - to light and their "antics" soon reveal more than slightly sinister plots at the heart of the kingdom, the novel also reveals to each character the truth about themselves and the secrets held deep in their hearts. This graphic novel, at once whimsical and harrowing, pushes us to do the same and look inward, asking ourselves the question of whether or not we really are the people we *like* to believe we are, and are we ready to take the steps into becoming the people we're truly supposed to be?

Slate reviewers said of Nimona, "[It's] [f]unny and vibrant. A kind of deadpan epic," and it's hard to describe the experience of the work in any other way (I also strongly recommend reading the reviews from the New York Times and the UK's the Independent). The never named fantasy realm the characters inhabit, with it's medieval setting and many anachronistic elements, also deepens the sense of...well, magic. The detailed choices of what looks modern by reader's perspective versus what remains in a more medieval style is really interesting, but doesn't distract and makes you want to know more about this world and dive deeper. In the same way, Stevenson tooled around with a number of stylistic options before deciding on the work that we see now, and in reading the bonus pages offered in the graphic novel you can see clearly how that choice impacts the action and movement present in each panel and our investment in the characters generating these actions. Color is another element which was obviously thought out carefully in the creation of Nimona. With Blackheart's and Goldenloin's names not only having color present in their names, but their designs being dark versus light to symbolically reinforce their positions as villain and hero - and then totally reject that cliché and turn it on it's head!

Nimona is truly a work of art in both the visual and literary sense. Something that is gripping and tender and appropriate for all ages. Such an impressive and beautiful work.

Great comic, poor shipping, damaged

Nimona's a fun comic! Which I would recommend, it's only a bummer my copy took awhile to arrive and when it did it looked like it had water damage or been smashed in the corner by a larger package. And then a random(?) obituary card fell from it when I started reading and super bummed and creeped me out since my own grandpa just died a couple weeks ago. I would like to suggest a different way of shipping like using a small card board box with a bubble wrap lining instead of a large soft envelope.

Couldn't see it.

I enjoyed Lumberjanes, so I had great expectations for Nimona, but sadly, it didn't work out. The concept seemed to be interesting, but the type was so small and faint that I couldn't read it except by jamming it up close to my eyes, and the pictures were hard to see as well. Might have worked better in standard graphic novel format rather than the small size. Format is such an important part of a graphic novel, and this was close to impossible to read. A recent eye exam showed my eyes are fine, but Nimona was just too much.

Murderous Marxist girl

Nimona is a disturbing story about a nihilist Marxist girl who wants to be a villain's sidekick & is frustrated that the villain isn't more evil & murderous. The story vilifies the police & the villains overthrow the govt. This is the fantasy of every angst ridden loser who hated authority and rebelled against their parents. It's garbage at best or meant to corrupt our youth with Marxism at worst. If you want your kids to be happy productive respectful contributing members of society then don't let them read this book.

A fun story that becomes... so much more.

You know that classic cartoon trope concerning heroes and villains? The bad guy is like, "Nothing can stop my evil plan! The kingdom is mine!" And then the good guy is like, "Don't worry, civilians! I will save the day!" And then the good guy stops the bad guy, the bad guy is all, "Argh, I'll get you next time!", and then a week later the cycle repeats itself. Nimona is what would happen if you took that premise, and you threw in a wildcard element.

Based on a webcomic, Nimona follows a young shapeshifter who aspires to be a great villain. She becomes the sidekick of the devious Ballister Blackheart, assisting his plans to defeat the Institution, and the kingdom's chosen hero Ambrosius Goldenloin, and then ignores all of the rules of the status quo. What follows is an entertaining adventure that never goes quite exactly how you expect.

Nimona is full of humor, action, heart, and sometimes straight-up goofiness. Deceptive in its initial presentation, the comic has a lot to be enjoyed for many kinds of readers. While there are many parts of the story that I won't reveal in this review, I will say that the final two chapters are what pushed this story from four stars to five. Truly an enjoyable read, especially for those who enjoy stories that start out simple, but eventually reveal themselves to be much more.

The fantasy graphic novel I never knew I needed

When Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a vendetta, meets an impulsive young shapeshifter named Nimona, he reluctantly takes her on as a sidekick. Despite some rule breaking, the two end up working well together in their mission on exposing the not-so-heroic Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics. But Lord Blackheart begins to worry that Nimona’s powers may be more dangerous than she lets on.

Nimona was recommended to me by a friend from a writing group I manage (who was also nice enough to let me borrow her copy since my book budget is non-existent right now). From the books she had seen me reading, she thought it was a graphic novel I would enjoy. And she was right!

Nimona was magical. I was hooked by the first page and read it in about 3 days. I loved Noelle Stevenson’s art style and I loved the overall story. It reminded me a lot of a short story I had written several years ago combined with a one act play I wrote in college. The characters were beautifully created, and I especially loved the spunky Nimona who was there to shake up the traditional ways of the hero and villain. I also loved the potential love story that just poked it’s head out a little bit. I would love to learn more about all of the characters and know what happened to them after this story ended.

As someone who doesn’t usually read graphic novels, Nimona was one of those stories that made me want to check out more just like it. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good fantasy/sci fi crossover.

Buy This!!!! It's Awesome!

I finished just Nimona. It may be one of the best stories I've ever read. I'm not gonna say best comic book because I think it stands up to novels just as well as it does to other comic books. It's got really likable, well written and thought out characters. The plot is great! It's funny, but serious. There's a solid ending on it that feels hopeful and realistic, completely fitting the story. The world is amazingly well built. The art is a great fit for the story, being appealingly funny when the story is funny and creepily dark when the story calls for bad things to happen. I love Ballister, Ambrosius, and Nimona. The story is one of my favorites from here on out.

Not Manga not quality

Low quality artwork and childish story. Amazon suggestions pointed to this. I will not trust amazon suggestions again. The only way this book could get a recommendation is fake marketing.
