Description

“With a Kim Harrison novel, I expect action, humour, worldbuilding, strong female characters, true friendships, and a bit of realistic romance. I found it all right here.” From Publishers Weekly A seasoned author of supernatural tales, Harrison makes her YA debut with the story of 17-year-old Madison Avery, who is killed by a "dark reaper" named Kairos on her prom night. But by stealing Kairos's amulet in the process, Madison manages to retain her soul. Along with Barnabas, a beautiful "light reaper," and Grace, her guardian angel, Madison plots to repossess her body and protect her prom date from Kairos and from the dark reapers' attempts to control time and fate. Having been content as an outsider ("I was happier being myself-purple hair, loud music, dead, and everything-than trying to fit in"), Madison must build her trust in others in order to save her life and discover her fate-whether or not she even believes in fate. Though rules and explanations seem at times a little too convenient, Harrison weaves an exciting battle, not between good and evil, but between free will and destiny. A compelling blend of mysticism, suspense and surprise make for a quick and pleasurable read. Ages 12-up. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Madison's prom was killer—literally. For some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper—yeah, that kind of reaper—intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away. Now she's stuck on Earth—dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course. With a little ingenuity, some light-bending, and the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys! Maybe . . . ), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her. Well, if she believed in that stuff. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From Booklist Madison is dead. After she fled her prom with a mysterious guy and ended up in a crashed car—only to survive and then be struck down by this guy’s magical sword—she has existed in a curious state of purgatory. She still walks around, interacts with others, eats, and sleeps, only now she does so in the company of Barnabas, a light reaper—a kind of angel who fights off dark reapers trying to harvest the souls of people about to make fate-altering decisions. There are also timekeepers, dark wings, guardian angels, seraphs, and magical amulets. If you’re already clutching your head in despair, you won’t be alone: the architecture of Harrison’s world is confusing even after several explanations. However, for ardent fans of the good-looking undead, this has plenty of verve, an enjoyable role reversal (Madison is constantly rescuing the good-guy hunk), and is quite fun when the supernatural characters are placed within a regular high-school milieu. Like it or not, a sequel is rising from the underworld as we speak. Grades 8-11. --Daniel Kraus --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From School Library Journal Grade 7-10–With her purple-tipped hair and Goth style, Madison didn't fit in when she was alive, and she has real problems now that she is dead. She went to the prom with popular and handsome Josh, but when she found out that her dad had arranged the fix-up, she ran off with the dangerously charming Kairos. This was a bad idea. Kairos is a dark timekeeper who needed to strike down Madison because his own time was about to run out and when he tried, she stole his amulet. This event sets off a unique adventure in which Madison is stuck somewhere between life and death. Caught up in a world of dark and light reapers, seraphs, and guardian angels, she has to fight to get the correct amulet and to reunite her body and soul so that she can live out a life cut short. The characters and their specific jobs and places in the hierarchy of heaven and earth are hard to follow, perhaps because this first book in the series is the setup for those that follow. The final chapters are by far the best as readers finally get a handle on all of the intricacies of the story and become attached to some of the characters, such as Grace, a funny and charming guardian angel who often speaks in limericks. –Jake Pettit, Thompson Valley High School, Loveland, CO Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Wish I had read the second book first

We all know the author has a great "voice," so reading this wasn't a hardship. BUT the plot has more holes than Swiss cheese, which really did bother me, until the end where it became evident that everything that's wrong with the backstory and the universe she built is what the main character is supposed to fix in the next book(s). So now it makes sense, but it was still annoying while I was reading it.

If you are willing to wait for the last chapter for a book to "click," in hopes of better to come, then I can recommend this book. If not, skip straight to the next book in the series, skip straight to go, do not go to jail.

Slow Starter Had Me Hooked By The End

For context I'll state I haven't been a young adult in a very long time and I bought and read this book because I'm a huge fan of Kim Harrison's writing in her Hollows series.

I had previously read the short in the Prom Nights From Hell anthology which introduced Madison and how she died and got the amulet. While I don't think it's absolutely necessary to read that first, since most of the major details are mentioned again in Once Dead, Twice Shy, I think it probably avoids quite a bit of initial confusion to read it first. This is especially true in regards to the amulet Madison has.

I think Harrison has done a fantastic job in bringing something new and unique to the table in the genre of urban fantasy with this series. I love vampires and werewolves as much as the next person, but it's always good to have a change of pace. However, I wasn't sure, even after enjoying the short story, that I was going to be really that interested in the whole reapers thing. Even though I'm a Harrison fan, she had to sell me on this one.

The book started off pretty good trying to establish everything and there was some nice action, but I think it got a bit bogged down in the middle. I was starting to think this wasn't going to be my cup of tea and I was losing interest. But then the second half of the book really ramped things up again and I ended up thoroughly enjoying it.

What I ended up enjoying so much was that Harrison began inserting a lot of complexity in the characters, world, and plot, which is something she excels at and why I'm such a fan of her writing. Her characters and plots are rarely flat or one or two-dimensional. The world that Madison Avery finds herself in isn't one of clearly good guys and bad guys, even though she's thinking in those terms to start with. And once the issues of choice versus fate start becoming more pronounced near the end it gives the reader a lot to think about, both in terms of how they view the characters and how they view the subject in general. Plus, Harrison writes great intense action scenes that leave me almost breathless.

Once Dead, Twice Shy is a bit of a slow starter and did not grab me and reel me in immediately like Dead Witch Walking did (her first Hollows book). But sticking with it I was amply rewarded for my time and I'm ready for more now that the stage is set and we've got a really interesting cast of characters to further the story. Grace especially was a lot of fun and I'm very interested to see what will happen with Nakita.

The same Kim Harrison?

Two points in my (sort of) review.

1. THE Kim Harrison wrote this? Of Rachel Mariana Morgan glory? Really?

I just did not feel her flow or usually amazingly vivid characterization in this.

2. I think I have to stop reading YA fiction. I just can't handle the high school/young girl tropes anymore.

But seriously, THAT Kim Harrison?? Still a die-hard fan of her other work though!

Not as Good as Rachel Morgan

I didn't hate this book. Hmm, damning with faint praise? I just didn't like it as well as Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan The Hollows series. I don't plan to buy the second one in this series. It may have to do with the fact that I listened to this book on audible rather than reading it myself. I disliked the audible narrator.

The usual warring angels vs demons and which side are you really on, little girl?
Madison Avery is dead. After running away from her prom date with a strange guy she's never met before, they get in a car accident. This does not kill her. The guy's (a Dark Reaper) sword stabbing her does. She doesn't know why he came to kill her, but she knows that by stealing his amulet she is able to keep her soul in her body and continue living life normally, or as normal as possible when you're a dead teenager. Now she is constantly under the watchful eyes of Barnabas, a Light Reaper, and Grace, her new Guardian Angel. While trying to learn to read auras and thoughts, Madison is trying to keep up the facade of a normal life at home with her dad, and her relationship with Josh (her prom date).

Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance was well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

Guardian Angels, Light Reapers, Dark Reapers, Timekeepers, Ghosts........ How to know who is good and or whom to trust.

Guardian Angels, Light Reapers, Dark Reapers, Timekeepers, Ghosts........ How to know who is good and or whom to trust.
But Madison Avery has to figure it all out, well because she had a killer prom, not literally it was a killer, or she meet one there.
Now it is up to her to figure it all out before something happens to her real body, and or the one people see as hers, but is only a facsimile.
Fun, interesting and quick easy read, but very entertaining.

Although I loved Kim Harrison's Hollows series

Although I loved Kim Harrison's Hollows series, this is just a let down. The maturity of the characters seems to keep switching from young teen to young Twenty-something. And the angels, who have been around for ages apparently are not much different. This inconsistency makes for a rough read, I was hoping it would settle down in the 2nd book but it only was more distracting.

Kim Harrison & Dawn Cook

This is the reading order of Madison Avery's Series (Young Adult)

Anthology-Prom Nights from Hell
1. Once Dead, Twice Shy
2. Early to Death, Early to Rise
3. Something Deadly this way Comes
***(Kim Harrison is also the author of the excellent series 'Hollows')***

If you like dead(but not dead) girls, Reapers (light reaper or dark reaper), Timekeepers, Seraphs, Guardian Angels- this book/series is for you!
I don't care if you are 12, 25, 51 years old, this is a great series. If you want a break from vampires and weres, you will enjoy this series.
My only complaint is it ends after 'Something Deadly this way Comes,' I could read a lot more of this series.

Quick enjoyable

I enjoyed the book but I didn't relate to the characters as well as her other series, probably because I am older now.
