Description

A perfect balance of satirical observation and chocolate-box charm ... one of the cosiest and funniest reads this winter― The Lady Angela Thirkell is perhaps the most Pym-like of any twentieth-century author, after Pym herself― Alexander McCall Smith A perfect balance of satirical observation and chocolate-box charm ... Thirkell's novel is one of the cosiest and funniest reads this winter― The Lady Angela Thirkell is perhaps the most Pym-like of any twentieth-century author, after Pym herself― Alexander McCall Smith Angela Thirkell (1890-1961) was the eldest daughter of John William Mackail, a Scottish classical scholar and civil servant, and Margaret Burne-Jones. Her relatives included the pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, Rudyard Kipling and Stanley Baldwin, and her grandfather was J. M. Barrie. She was educated in London and Paris, and began publishing articles and stories in the 1920s. In 1931 she brought out her first book, a memoir entitled Three Houses , and in 1933 her comic novel High Rising - set in the fictional county of Barsetshire, borrowed from Trollope - met with great success. She went on to write nearly thirty Barsetshire novels, as well as several further works of fiction and non-fiction. She was twice married and had four children.

Features & Highlights

  • Pomfret Towers, Barsetshire seat of the earls of Pomfret, was constructed, with great pomp and want of concern for creature comforts, in the once-fashionable style of Sir Gilbert Scott's St Pancras station. It makes a grand setting for a house party at which gamine Alice Barton and her brother Guy are honoured guests, mixing with the headstrong Rivers family, the tally-ho Wicklows and, most charming of all, Giles Foster, nephew and heir of the present Lord Pomfret. But whose hand will Mr Foster seek in marriage, and who will win Alice's tender heart? Angela Thirkell's classic 1930s comedy is lively, witty and deliciously diverting.

One of my favorite Barsetshire books

I have read almost all of Angela Thirkell's books. Pomfret Towers was the first of her Barsetshire novels that I read, and it continues to be one of my favorites. The characters are so memorable - Sally, Alice, Gillie, Lord and Lady Pomfret, Merry, Hermione and her wretched son and burdened daughter - the list goes on an on. The storyline centers around a pre WWII long weekend at Pomfret Towers and relationships that form as a result. Highly recommended for anyone who is already a reader of Thirkell or those who love a good country house read.

and I really enjoyed them, then

I remember reading many of her books decades ago, and I really enjoyed them, then. They always are about upper middle class Brits in their country homes in the 1930's. But they have lost their charm for me now- no character development- no surprises, no depth. As with all books- its all about what you are in the mood for at a particular time in your own life. When I originally read them, my own life was in such tumult that her books were very soothing to me.

Good writer, but slow for me.

I gave this 3 stars because the author is a good writer----it's just that this book was 1st published in 1938 England and there are many references to things that must have been obvious to pre WWII English readers, but I couldn't understand. And after a while, I didn't want to. Lots of talking, witty for the time, I guess. Nothing much happens while I was reading. I soon gave up. Maybe I should have stuck with it until something actually happened-----if anything ever did. Oh, well.

Artists and Writers and Dogs

For anyone ready for an escape to a more comfortable and amusing world in a small country town not far from London between the wars, Pomfret Towers is a perfect destination. While the plot in general is fairly tame, the people involved are great fun, and some of the lines make me laugh out loud. I love these characters, and want to read more about them as they progress in their various relationships.

Humor, romance and satire, a light hearted novel

If you have not yet read a novel by Thirkell, Pomfret Towers is an excellent choice to start with. These novels are called the Barsetshire novels since they are set in that fictional area of England, between the wars, on country estates. If you like humor, romance and satire as I do, these are the novels for you. Thirkell wrote about 30 novels so we have lots of fun reading ahead; I have only read five and this is my favorite thus far. Romance and dinner parties for the upper class, half a dozen young people “in need of romance and an engagement”, a girl who is very shy, one who is sporty, a young kind man who is the heir to Pomfret Towers, two well known lady authors (one pushy and rude, the other modest), dogs, driving cars fast on country lanes. This book is ideal to lift your spirits and get you to smile.

Good read for relaxing and calming the mind

Still holds up as a good read to relax with and while dated - yes it shows its age and the time (1930s) it was written in but a fun read to relax with and the tone, humor, plot and characters definately transport one to England in the 1930s

Angie T.

Typical Angela Thirkell. She wrote nice, humorous, gentle stories. No dark suspense. No deep plot twists. Just lovely English country people interacting with one another.

Thought-provoking novel.

This was a gift for my mother who is an avid fan of Thirkell. Although her writing can be a bit dense, the character development is wonderful. Thirkell has a way of interjecting ideas that provoke further thought.
