Description

From Publishers Weekly First published in 1976 under the title The Broker's Wife, Collins's second novel (after the eponymous Quarry) featuring the Vietnam vet turned hit man is a brisk page-turner that works well as a prequel for readers who are only familiar with more recent titles in the series. The book opens with Quarry being stalked in his Wisconsin home by two killers. They were ostensibly sent by someone who believes Quarry was responsible for the murder of the Broker, the middleman who gave Quarry his lethal assignments. After surviving the encounter, Quarry follows a lead to Davenport, Iowa, where his efforts to stay alive are complicated by an attractive woman who crosses his path. The story line is deceptively simple. As usual, Collins imbues even walk-on characters with personality. This reissue is a good entry point to the series for fans of gritty crime fiction, and showcases some of the prolific Collins's best work. Making a stone-cold killer sympathetic isn't easy, but Collins pulls it off. Agent: Dominick Abel, Dominick Abel Literary Agency. Quarry Hits His Stride

I'm grateful to Hard Case Crime for a fine job of getting the early Quarry novels back in print in an especially attractive format. Quarry's List is the second in the series and, as author Max Allan Collins notes in an afterword, Quarry was never intended to be an ongoing series, but an editor convinced him otherwise.
I hesitate to discuss much about the book since the Quarry series is plot driven and full of twists and surprises. Suffice to say, Quarry tries to figure out what's going on, people try to kill him and he kills people. The 70's setting is groovy and no one knows the Midwest like Iowa native Max Allan Collins. Quarry the assassin is not likeable, but since the story is told from his point of view, author Collins puts the reader in the morally odd position of sympathizing with a coldblooded killer. This gory, sex-filled hardboiled series if not for everyone, but for those who like their crime novels gritty, Quarry is the series for you.

Modern day Spillane

Max Allan Collins dedicates this book to Mickey Spillane and it shows a true dedication as this is a modern day Spillane-like book.

Quarry is a hitman who finds the roles reversed as someone tries to kill him. Why did they? Who ordered the hit?

This is a super fast paced read, filled with some neat twists and very skilful writing by Mr Collins.

It is not Steinbeck or Hemingway so don't expect their depth but what you do get is a pleasurable read.

Quarry's sequel.

Quarry's List is the second published entry in Max Allan Collins' Quarry series. In it, the title character meets a gorgeous woman named Carrie and races to obtain a highly coveted list containing the identities of dozens of other hitmen. There are multiple killings along the way.
On the positive side, Quarry's List is fast paced and can easily be polished off in short order. On the negative side, the plot is forced, overly convoluted and ultimately unsatisfying. A three star effort.
