Description

“Vonn’s memoir is admirable not only for the way it portrays her ruthless will to succeed, but also for how it eschews ‘juicy gossip’ about a much-publicized past. Fans of women’s sports and especially skiing will no doubt find the book satisfying…. A grittily candid memoir.”xa0 — Kirkus Reviews “Vonn sets aside the medals and shows readers her human side.” — Popsugar "I know the feeling of cold, early mornings and freezing, late-night practices. Lindsey’s story from skiing tiny Minnesota hills to towering Colorado mountains strikes a chord in anyone who’s been told they don’t fit the mold. Rise demonstrates the importance of setting yourself apart to change the game—how the game is played, how to improve the game, and how to use your platform for those coming after you." — Wayne Gretzky "Lindsey Vonn’s story is an unfiltered, honest look at the mountains that need conquering for a female athlete to forge her own path, no matter how good she is. Powerful and evocative, Rise showcases Lindsey’s achievements on the hill and her emotional work off of it." — Billie Jean King "Lindsey Vonn is a true American icon in the world of sports and will be remembered as one of, if not the greatest, of all time. But more important than her historic accomplishments, the Lindsey I’ve become close with is a good, solid human being with a heart that knows no boundaries. And that’s her greatest accomplishment of all." — Dwayne Johnson "Lindsey’s twenty-year career in professional skiing is a testament to what it takes to relentlessly pursue greatness. She rose to the top of her sport and had incredible longevity in the face of countless setbacks, not only persevering but also succeeding at the highest level. This memoir is an honest and inspirational story of the sacrifice, hard work, and adversity she faced, and embodies what it means to be a true champion." — Tom Brady "Lindsey has overcome many injuries and setbacks in her career and always fought her way back. Despite what she went through, she was able to stay at the top of her sport for over a decade. Her story is inspirational, not just for athletes like myself, but to anyone facing an obstacle in life." — Roger Federer "Lindsey Vonn is the embodiment of what it means to be More Than an Athlete. She is someone who not only spent more than twenty years dominating and elevating her sport, but also empowering and uplifting women’s sports and everyone around her while doing it. In the process, she’s transcended sports to become one of the greatest athletes of her time and also one of the best in business. She’s been incredibly smart and creative in her dealmaking and partner choices, which has helped forge a path that all athletes can follow." — Maverick Carter "This memoir deserves a gold medal. Honest and inspiring, the story of a little girl who grows up to discover that bravery in life is harder than hurling yourself down an icy mountain slope at eighty miles per hour, that friendship is more precious than fame, and that one-upping your past self and learning every single day is the ultimate competition. I literally couldn’t read anything else until I finished it." — Angela Duckworth, author of Grit "To be a downhill champion you must love the adrenaline, the speed, and all of the danger that comes with it. Lindsey’s full-throttle approach led her to immense success but also incredible defeats. She overcame it all while staying true to herself and changing the sport in the process. Her grit and determination helped her to become one of the greatest skiers of all time, but she’s only just getting started." — Jean-Claude Killy Lindsey Vonn is a three-time Olympic medal-winning alpine ski racer for the U.S. Ski Team. The best female skier of all time, she holds seven World Championship medals, twenty World Cup titles, and is one of only seven women to have won World Cup races in all five disciplines of alpine skiing. Lindsey was also a Today Show correspondent during the 2014 Winter Olympics and is the founder of the Lindsey Vonn Foundation, which works to empower young girls. Now retired, she lives in Utah.

Features & Highlights

  • The first ever memoir from the most decorated female skier of all time, revealing never-before-told stories of her life in the fast lane, her struggle with depression, and the bold decisions that helped her break down barriers on and off the slopes.
  • 82 World Cup wins. 20 World Cup titles. 3 Olympic medals. 7 World Championship Medals.
  • A fixture in the American sports landscape for almost twenty years, Lindsey Vonn is a legend. With a career that spanned a transformation in how America recognizes and celebrates female athletes, Vonn—who retired in 2019 as the most decorated American skier of all time—was in the vanguard of that change, helping blaze a trail for other world-class female athletes and reimagining what it meant to pursue speed at all costs.
  • In
  • Rise
  • , Vonn shares her incredible journey for the first time, going behind the scenes of a badass life built around resilience and risk-taking. One of the most aggressive skiers ever, Vonn offers a fascinating glimpse into the relentless pursuit of her limits, a pursuit so focused on one-upping herself that she pushed her body past its breaking point as she achieved greatness. While this iconic grit and perseverance helped her battle a catalog of injuries, these injuries came with a cost—physical, of course, but also mental. Vonn opens up about her decades-long depression and struggles with self-confidence, discussing candidly how her mental health challenges influenced her career without defining her.
  • Through it all, she dissects the moments that sidelined her and how, each time, she clawed her way back using an iconoclastic approach rooted in hard work—pushing boundaries, challenging expectations, and speaking her mind, even when it got her into trouble. At once empowering and raw,
  • Rise
  • is an inspirational look at her hard-fought success as well as an honest appraisal of the sacrifices she made along the way—an emotional journey of winning that understands all too well that every victory comes with a price.

A Little Flat

I’m a huge LV fan and as a ski racer, she’s the best there’s ever been. As a writer: she’s a great ski racer. I wanted to love this book like I loved watching Lindsey’s career, but it didn’t really succeed in stitching together a compelling narrative. It was more a random procession of memories and more that it’s share of cliché. Too bad, there’s a great life story in there, maybe a ghost writer could have helped bring it out.

Resilience!

If there is one word to describe Lindsay, look no more: Resilience is the word. Her chase of being the best in the world, was an endless mindset that needs to be adjusted everyday of her life, for her to be on the top of her game as she herself always set the bar beyond where whatever she was at the moment. She is true an inspiration to all who wants to achieve anything in life. Focus on what you can control, and adjust and be the best around the things you can't. Rise above.

Excellent memoir by most decorated female skier!

Being a big fan of autobiographies and the Olympics, it wasn’t a hard decision to read RISE: MY STORY by Lindsey Vonn. Now skiing isn’t a sport I follow too closely, but I’ll watch some of it during the Games and Vonn’s name is recognizable to me. Other than that, I don’t know much about who she is or what she has done career-wise, so RISE was a super interesting read for me to learn about her skiing career and personal struggles.

First, I would like to say as someone with absolutely no skiing expertise whatsoever, Vonn made the skiing topics super easy to understand. I never felt like the woman who is considered the most decorated female skier of all time was speaking a foreign language about of sport I couldn’t understand, which, tbh is sometimes how I feel with experts and their autobiographies. This book is 100% user-friendly.

Second, Vonn loves skiing so much that I almost forgot that I don’t know how to ski and I don’t love skiing. (Sorry, Lindsey!) But her enthusiasm had me so pumped that I wanted to go out and purchase skis and get up on a hill.

Third, Vonn speaks open and honestly about her depression, which as someone who suffers from it, I loved this. “It’s not a sign of weakness, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, so why not lead by example?” I applaud this sentiment and this is why it needs to be talked about. “I can recognize that things are good and still feel down—much of my life is spent holding those two contradictory emotions in my head simultaneously, not because it’s rational, but because it’s who I am.” I have never felt so seen after this statement.

Finally, since my eyes were bothering me again, I half-listened/half-read this book only to realize when I finished that Vonn didn’t read her own book. That was disappointing because I love when the authors read it, but Andi Arndt did an excellent job and I recommend the audio.

This is a great autobiography especially if you are already a fan of Vonn! But if she’s just a recognizable name to you like me, you’ll enjoy it, too. I did. It makes you love a winter sport, supports mental health, and learn about a fantastic decorated athlete.

left out critical details of her life

Lindsey Vonn's story is a good one but there is no mention of Tiger Woods. Not even one line. It's as if he was completely erased from her life.

She might be listed as the author but she had help because she only has a GED. Someone else helped write this but that person isn't identified or didn't get authoring credit.

Her accomplishments weren't worth it. She injured herself so many times that the physical pain was a bad trade for all of the money and fame she got. Now she enters the world of becoming irrelevant.

An honest account if a driven athlete who lost her way in the world outside of skiing.

A sophomoric account of ski racing, but an honest account of how to overcome adversity and injury.

I loved this book

I would never be mistaken for an athlete, but I discovered that I shared some little experiences like learning on little hills in Minnesota and eventually enjoying the view from slopes around Chamonix.

What I discovered about Lindsey, however, was something about the shear determination, effort, sacrifice, and total focus that was needed to participate at her level. The book seemed extremely personal with unexpected details about the help she received, the inspiration that guided her, the loneliness of practice and competition.

I have never even known about anyone so driven to excel, so successful in her endeavor, while still poised and caring. Lindsey became the best there is and I am grateful for an opportunity to glimpse the process.

A great look at the mind/life of a top athlete

Have followed her career over the years. Watching the top skiers is fantastic, they go down the hill on an edge and are so close to winning or sometimes hitting the fence too. We usually never get to see the inside story of an athlete, in this book you do. Thanks, Lindsey for inside look at your life.
