Description

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It. Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London. Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

Features & Highlights

  • Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Its plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but, to expand the plot, developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare's original.Shakespeare's use of his poetic dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play.

Center Aligned and Abbreviated Names

There's many issues to this version of Romeo and Juliet. I bought it as a gift for a friend, and was disappointed and hesitant to give it to her.
Here's the two biggest issues:
-It is center-aligned the. entire. time.
-The names are abbreviated with no indication where the name stops and the dialogue starts.

I am a big fan of Romeo and Juliet. And this book was pretty disappointing. They don't spell the full names of the characters. And they abbreviate everything. I don't recommend this book.

Enjoyed it!

To be clear I definitely had to read the No Fear version because it made it easier for me to understand while I was in high school. Note on the No Fear version: in my opinion the sex scenes and crude language of are embellished more.

I really liked this Shakespeare novel. The story of forbidden love is always a winner for me. I think I forget sometimes that they were super young because the story is so mature. Could have done with out the Friar encouraging Juliet to fake her death. While funny in a way it also ended up costing both Romeo and Juliet their lives. Then again why did no one think to tell Romeo. Overall the witty, sarcastic remarks really bring you in.
