Description

From Booklist A veteran CIA officer stumbles upon a conspiracy and is executed for her nosiness. A friend of the murder victim, Nora Mossa, another CIA agent, quickly finds her life in danger. She flees, deciding the only person who can help her is Alex Koves, an ex-agent and Nora’s former lover; unfortunately, he wants nothing to do with her. But Alex can’t resist the excitement he feels when on an active assignment. Not knowing whom to trust, they are forced to work off the grid if they are to find retribution for the death of their friend. The conspiracy involves high-up members of the government helping Iran develop nuclear capability, and they are willing to kill anyone who stands in their way. The character development here is first-rate, and the story line is intense. What could easily have been just another conspiracy thriller feels fresh and new in the capable hands of first-novelist Lee. The ending leaves some of the story unresolved, suggesting that a series is in the making. That would be a very good thing. --Jeff Ayers --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. “Lee gets his book going a hundred miles an hour with his hair on fire and barely ever slows down.” ― Elmore Leonard, New York Times bestselling author of Raylan “Death, mayhem, murder, Mossad, nukes, maniac billionaires set on world domination, double- and (of course) triple-crosses, Sandstorm has all the muscle-power of its title.” ― Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Fate “ Sandstorm is excitement detonated! No serious health issues other than a brief fondness for alcohol. The usual amount of bad dates before the right one showed up. She was proud to have served her country with honor, no matter what some of the assholes at the CIA thought. She’d get a black star chiseled into the white face of Vermont marble on the Wall of Honor at Langley. Her husband, Paul, was the rock of her foundation and the main reason the drinking stopped. There was plenty more to reflect upon, but she was out of time. The ominous figure clad in a dripping wetsuit stood motionless a few feet away in her Annapolis, Maryland, kitchen. She knew his presence was of her own doing. She hadn’t been able to keep her nose out of things. When they’d reassigned her from station chief in Moscow back to Langley, she’d been able to deal with the indignity only for so long before it had really pissed her off. Working from a desk, she’d searched daily for trouble, and once she’d stumbled upon it, resisting the temptation to dig further had been impossible. She’d wanted to take her suspicions up the ladder to her superiors but had lacked concrete proof. Plus, she could ill-afford another blemish on her record. As a puddle formed on the tile, Erica figured he’d been watching her for a long time from the inlet off the Chesapeake Bay, the water’s edge just a chip shot away. She’d been on the deck for most of the evening and hadn’t heard or seen anything unusual.Erica stared at the 9 mm pistol pointed at her chest. “If it’s money you want, I only have about sixty dollars in the house.” She was trying to buy time. She knew he wasn’t here for money. Common criminals didn’t walk around with silenced weapons. She coyly eased toward the knife holder on the counter. The intruder, of course, recognized what she was trying to do. He almost wanted to give her a fighting chance. While watching from the water, he’d discovered there was something playfully amusing about her. She hardly came across as the cold-hearted threat she was portrayed to be. But he’d never been given a reason not to trust his handler’s orders. He focused his weapon squarely on Erica’s heart as she stood next to the knife holder. She didn’t bother to make the attempt, knowing it was futile. She prepared herself as best she could. There was nothing to say that would alter her predicament. The thought that she would not die in vain gave her a degree of comfort. She’d prepared a package to be sent in the event that something happened to her. They would have no way of knowing that. She decided not to scream. There really was no point. The house was hidden away behind ample foliage down a path. One of the attractions about the property had been its privacy.Erica closed her eyes, thinking of Paul. She heard the muffled thump as a bullet left the chamber and tore through her heart.*xa0xa0xa0*xa0xa0xa0*On his way out, Janway’s executioner paused to look at several notes she had scribbled on a notepad while sitting on the deck. As he read, he observed that some were pertinent to why he was here. In the lower right-hand corner, framed by subconscious doodling, were two letters firmly repeated a couple of times. They meant nothing to him, but as he tore the pages away, he decided he’d make sure “NM” was run through every database of Janway’s life. At this point, there could be no loose ends.xa0Copyright © 2013 by Alan L. Lee --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Read more

Storybook thriller?

When I was a teenager I dreamed of writing and this is the book I would have written at 16 - in other words it's a young man's fantasy. The hero is Mr. All American - ruggedly handsome, extremely virulent, a master fighter, and over the top intelligence Same for the heroine. In other words the premise is unbelievable. My understanding of spies is that they need to attract as little attention as possible and yet in this novel it is just the opposite. In one passage the author even wrote (I am paraphrasing), when she entered the room every eye was on her, she was so stunning. The other problem, a much used, I should say overused plot. The cabal of filthy rich men who are plotting to rule the world. Aren't we tired of this one yet. Would not recommend - where are Robert Ludlum and Frederick Forsythe when we need them?

Sandstorm

I am a big fan of books with this genre. Like the author, I was a huge fan of Vince Flynn. I got this book as a Father's Day present and I was not disappointed. Alan is a television news anchor and morning program host and I was concerned that the book might be a way of "cashing in" on his fame. However Mr. Lee is a storyteller with a great ability to set the pace keep you wanting more. Even though this is his first book, Mr. Lee's book is polished and leaves the reader wanting another book. Although Vince Flynn has passed on, his legacy is in good hands. Write On!

Not a bad way to spend a rainy day

The plot's a bit outlandish but in a fun way, like Vince Flynn, and the characters are winning. I'd definitely try another Lee book when I'm in the mood for something light.

Powerful, impactful great novel - can't wait to read your next one

I ordered this book because it was written by a local anchorman who was retiring from reporting news to write more books. Just thought why not support the local guy and started reading with no expectations. Wow was I surprised! Alan is fantastic at character development and weaving a storyline bringing all the different characters together with a very impactful story. It goes from the Washington D.C. ABC companies to the Caribbean, Paris, Iran, etc. The story was interesting and totally enjoyable. I rarely find a book that I can't put down but this was one of them. I just had to find out what would happen next. I am very much looking forward to his next book and I have a feeling that this will be a great series if he chooses to go with some of the same characters again. If you like international intrigue, mystery, thriller type books you will love this book. I know I did! Keep them coming Alan.

Quick moving attention grabber

Grab yourself a rum and coke and pull up a lounge chair, this is the kind of book that urges you to sink your feet into the sand and escape for a while.

Alan Lee's debut novel Sandstorm is a great summer read. The spy thriller moves quickly, grabbing your attention on the very first page, adding a few beats to your heart rate and a few volts of electricity to your brain, waking up your sense of curiosity.

Like a good puzzle that you can't stop working until you solve, Sandstorm is hardly work at all, it's more like a guilty pleasure. Lee's story flows and his characters are easy to like and hate.

The clock is ticking as a hot CIA operative named Nora Mossa becomes the target of a group of exclusive billionaire boys and an Israeli spy master. They want her dead and she doesn't know why. Her quest to survive leads her to uncover a multinational conspiracy whose main objective is to arm Iran with nukes. Thousands of lives in the Middle East depend on Mossa's ability to survive and TO solve the clues to this deadly plot.

She can't do it alone and the now rogue agent is forced to team up with her former lover and ex-CIA agent Alex Koves. He's a man's man with biting humor. In fact, Koves is the kind of man most men wish they could be: World class athlete, handsome, smart, funny and with the ability to have any women he wants. Reading Sandstorm lets you be that guy, if just for a while.

Lee does a masterful job of taking you inside his character's heads, without over explaining motive or history. The dialogue is quick-witted, and I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the book. The chemistry between the virile Koves and the leggy Mossa had me making another rum or coke or two. My wife enjoyed the benefits too.

I also found myself turning the pages as quickly as possible to find out what happens next. The level of suspense hung with me after I put the book down. It didn't make turn on the light in a room, but did make me look closer at the shadows. For me, that's the right balance: More about intrigue with the thrill of fear.

The novel takes you to exotic and historic places around the world, without the annoying layover hangover. As a married, father of two, Sandstorm offered me the kind of escape that I can afford on my schedule and pay scale.

In the end I recommend this book for one giant reason: It's FUN.

If you're taking a summer vacation, pack Sandstorm for a complete escape. Can't physically get away? Give yourself a weekend getaway and stretch out for a good read that takes you places.

Kudos to Lee on his first novel. I look forward to the sequel.

If you enjoy espionage novels, this is a must read. I was throughly intrigued with the book from cover to cover - both the storyline (quite believable) and the characters. I will definitely be on the watch for follow-up stories that are sure to come. Read this book and you won't be disappointed.
