Description

From Booklist Barely recovered from the adventures of Shelter (2011), Mickey Bolitar plunges full force into his second mystery when classmate Rachel’s skull is grazed by a bullet and her mother is killed. With the help of Ema, a feisty goth, and Spoon, a kid with Asperger’s-like behavior, the high-school sleuth resolves to track down the shooter at all costs. Meanwhile, there are ongoing questions surrounding his father’s death, the Abeona Shelter’s secret mission to save children, and whom to trust. When not saving his town from murder and corruption and getting to know more about his sidekicks in the process, Mickey hopes to make his school’s basketball team, just like his estranged uncle. His uncle’s imparted advice (“There are always consequences to being a hero”) help direct the teen’s choices and slowly heal their awkward relationship. Mickey’s fast-paced, first-person narration won’t disappoint his growing fan base. The satisfying conclusion leaves enough open-ended questions to continue this gripping series. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The only question is whether Coben’s adult megastardom crosses over to youth. Given the big author tour and print and TV ads, we’re betting on it. Good Young Adult book

My husband and I are both fans of Harlan Coben, especially his Myron Bolitar series. This, billed as a young adult book, involves Mickey, a teenager and orphaned nephew of Myron's. You don't have to be a YA to enjoy this book.

A good novel, but also a sequel and part of a series. Expect loose ends...

SECONDS AWAY is the second young adult novel by Harlen Coben. It features Mickey Bolitar, the nephew of the great Myron Bolitar, once again at the center of murder, deceit and mystery.

This book is a sequel to SHELTER, and while you probably don't have to read that book to enjoy this one, it sure would help, because it picks up almost exactly where the first book left off. The Bat Lady, the old crazy woman everyone fears, hooked Mickey by telling him his father may still be alive in the first book. In this book, Mickey is still trying to recall the circumstances around the car wreck that killed his father and who exactly was the paramedic that helped his father at the scene? Did he have ties to Nazis? Could his father still be alive? Who is the shaved head man, and what is his agenda. What is the true purpose of the Aboena Shelter? All of these questions are carry-overs from the first novel.

The central mystery of this novel is Rachel, who is wounded in a gunfight which also takes the life of her mother. What happened to Rachel? That question consumes the lives of Mickey and his Goth, overweight friend Ema and nerdy intellectual Spoon. We learn a little more about Ema and this book, and this fresh cast of characters if refreshing, even if Myron is still very much involved. In fact, Wynn is referred to as are events between Myron and Mickey's dad that are covered in Coben's adult novels.

Coben writes with the ease and comfort who knows he's in it for the long haul. He has the skill as a writer to keep the pages turning, the reader entertained, while at the same time throwing out a lot more story than actually what is in the book. In other words, there are PLENTY of new plot threads available for the next book.

When you get down to it, the mystery of Rachel is quite simple. But Coben easily mixes in intrigue with the struggles of high school and Mickey's love for basketball and the fear of not fitting in.

Coben fans should love this book. It is standard Coben fare with a lot of twists and mysteries. More than any of his adult books, this novel leaves so much story to be addressed in future books. I like Mickey and his friends and his world of high school and high stakes intrigue is a lot of fun.

Is Cobin really the author?

Having been a Coben fan since many books back, I couldn't wait for this latest one so I pre-ordered. Mistake!! Much of the plot was based on a prior incident never really described. It may have appeared in a previous book but I don't want to have to refer to an earlier book to understand this one.

Meanwhile the plot becomes so convoluted what with haunted houses, the Holocaust, drug dealers
and basketball while all of this is investigated by teenage sleuths. The only thing missing are space aliens. Then there is really no ending. It sort of falls off a cliff. It leaves you with a ton of unanswered questions unless Mr. Coben expects to reveal them in his next Mickey mess which I'm certain to overlook. I think I remember books almost exactly like this in junior high. At any time I was expecting Nancy Drew to
show up.

I give this one star as its only redeeming value is its length. Short! I must admit it is listed as a young people's book. Perhaps 10-12 but not much older than that.
I hope Coben will go back to Myron and forget Mickey until he's out of high school and inherits the business.

Save your dough!!

No adults

Unless you look at the publisher, you would never realize it's for young people. It's the last book I will ever pre-order.

Book Two is also a Hit!

I am a big fan of Harlan Coben and when the first book came out, I bought it for my 14 year old grandson, who loved it. Gave him Book Two for Chanukah and he read it right away and is looking forward to another one. How great is that?

IF You are a Fans of Coben and the Bolitar Series, you will enjoy this book

Among Harlan Coben's numerous books, my favorite have always been those that involve Myron Bolitar and his entourage. This second book in Coben's young adult series features Myron's nephew, Mickey. The writing is voiced for a young adult audience, which requires a bit of an adjustment for those readers who have become accustomed to the Coben/Bolitar voice. Still, the classic insouciance and self-deprecation comes through loud and clear.

Coben returns to a familiar theme of children in need of rescuing, with Holocaust overtones, and offers up a story that is a true page turner. Mickey ends up in a series of dangerous situations, and very reluctantly reaches out to his Uncle Myron, whom he has still not forgiven for the breach that existed between Mickey's father and Myron. The end of the book seems to promise more volumes in this series.

Bad Reviews Confound Me

If you have been following the series most of the bad review comments are difficult to understand. As a avid reader and a big fan or Coben's "Bolitar" series I found this book to be very good for a short read. Even though it's storyline centers on teenage charcters I found it to be a great "thriller" and I'm 56 years old!

Teen Fiction

A disappointment...I purchased this book because my previous experience with Harlen Coban's books had been positive, but I have to say that I feel I was misled. Maybe I didn't read any reviews prior to my purchase--I don't know--Anyway, this book turned out to be teen fiction. Although the summary says it's a Myron Bolitar novel, it's really about his nephew Mickey and his teenage friends. In addition, there was little background about how they became involved in these capers; perhaps I should have read the novel previous to this one. The reading level was appropriate for junior high to high school and may prove popular with that demographic. As for me, I'll check more carefully next time I purchase one of Harlen Coban's books.
