Description

Sir Cumference and his wife, Lady Di, are back in another math adventure. As the hosts of a surprise birthday party for King Arthur, the couple needs to organize a growing number of guests for events to run smoothly. After several fumbling attempts to count the crowd, Sir Cumference realizes that the simplest way to figure out the total is to group the guests into tens, hundreds, and ultimately thousands. This system allows the royal celebration to take place without a hitch, resulting in a happy ending for all. Children will enjoy the lesson built into this tale and identify with the birthday-party theme. While the story can be enjoyed independently, most youngsters would benefit from sharing the book with an adult to fully understand the place value system. The math concept is explained in more detail in an author’s note. The painterly acrylic illustrations convey the action with humorous exaggeration and amusing details (the depiction of a farmer and his wife is reminiscent of Grant Wood’s American Gothic ). Libraries in which this series is popular will want to consider purchasing this title.— School Library Journal Cindy Neuschwander is an elementary school teacher who loves teaching math. She also enjoys traveling, reading, and writing stories. She thought up Sir Cumference while visiting medieval castles in England. Cindy lives in Pleasanton, California. Let’s give him a surprise party here at our castle to cheer him up. Perfect for teaching place value to third graders

Cindy Neuschwander does it again! Her Sir Cumference series is what initially got me interested in using the power of math literacy to enhance student understanding of math concepts. This book on place value couples an interesting story with a critical math concept for students. I immediately added it to my third grade math literacy library, and I think you should also.

Math is fun

Finally a fun way to introduce math concepts to kids. I love Cindy Neuschwander's way of combining an interesting plot with a mathematical concept. Children can visually see the idea and have it connected to a story. Love it! The illustrations are not my favorite, but that is of secondary importance.

Funny read even years later

Pretty funny book. Bought this book for my daughter when she was 6. Two years later, she still enjoys reading it. She liked how it talks about place values and she can apply it to when she is at school or when she has to count quickly. I would recommend to others.

I beg to differ

I was disappointed in this book after the glowing reviews. I think it did a poor job of teaching place value and really missed the mark. I'm still looking for a good book that teaches place value in a fun way...

Place Value Wonder

This book is an excellent addition to your math book collection. I found it very useful to teach place value and there are some awesome lesson resources available online as well. The kids still love to read it and a few even noticed the play on words with the character and town names.
