Description

From Booklist After her best friend attaches herself to Samantha’s first boyfriend, Sam is determined to spend her summer elsewhere. She ends up as a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines, where she gets to participate in all camp activities while assisting the counselors with the younger campers. By the end of the summer, Sam acquires an arch-enemy, as well as three best buds (the Sleepaway Girls) and a gorgeous boyfriend. Calonita offers a quintessential feel-good read, from Sam’s earliest crush on the camp’s gorgeous bad boy to her gradual realization that good men are the best boyfriends; from her initial jealous encounter with the camp director’s daughter to their forced, uneasy truce; and from her early video postcards back home to her ultimate Sleepaway Girls testament to the camp season. The picture-perfect setting, the sweet little kids, the seductive freedom from parents, and the lure of adult-like responsibility make this the perfect read-alike to suggest to fans of Ann Brashares’ Traveling Pants series. Grades 7-10. --Frances Bradburn Jen Calonita was never officially a sleepaway girl, but she was a camp counselor near her home on New York's Long Island. She had the rather uncool position of computer class counselor (It was the last position open and she really wanted to work there!), but she swears it was worth taking the lame title just to be among the dreamy boy counselors at her camp. Over the past eight years, as a Senior Editor at Teen People and a journalist for Entertainment Weekly, Glamour, and Marie Claire, Jen Calonita has interviewed everyone from Zac Effron to Justin TimberlakeJen's fifth Secrets novel, Broadway Lights , pubs in March 2010, and second standalone novel, Reality Check, about teen reality show stars, will pub May 2010.

Features & Highlights

  • When Sam's best friend gets her first boyfriend, she's not ready to spend the summer listening to the two of them call each other "pookie." Sick of being a third wheel, Sam applies to be a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines camp in the New York Catskills. But what she doesn't realize is that it's not going to be all Kumbaya sing-alongs and gooey s'mores. If Ashley, the alpha queen of Whispering Pines, doesn't ruin Sam's summer, then her raging crush on the surfer-blond and flirtatious Hunter just might. At least she has playful Cole, who's always teasing her, but is oh-so-comfortable to hang out with, and the singular gang of girls that become fast friends with Sam-they call themselves the Sleepaway Girls.

Great Read for the Summer

Mix one part romance, two parts friendship, and a whole lot of drama and you have the recipe that is Sleepaway Girls! This book is a perfect start to the summer!

Sleepaway Girls is one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. I was entertained throughout the entire novel and found myself laughing out loud!

From Sam's encounters with Hunter and Cole to the first prank, this novel never skipped a beat. I was so captivated by this book's brilliance that I was cheering for Sam and the other Sleepaway Girls during their war against Ashley. In addition, I anxiously remained on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what would happen at the close of the summer.

To me the best thing about Sleepaway Girls was the vivid characterization. Jen Calonita is a genius when it comes to creating the perfect mix of drama queens, dreamy guys, down to earth girls, and--don't let me forget--the adorable peeps. The characters were so cleverly written, that I could feel Sam's insecurities when Ashley appeared, and I could sense her timidness around the boys. And though you would anticipate experiencing these things with the main character, I felt that each of the minor characters were so sharply painted, that I could feel their emotions and read their thoughts as well.

If you are looking for an enjoyable read with memorable characters to keep you absorbed during the summer, look no further! Sleepaway Girls is one book you don't want to miss!

A twist from Jen, but I like it

I have alway enjoyed Jen's usual books, but when this one came out, I was skeptical. There was no promise of paparazzi, glam clothes, or celebrity elbow rubs. But in spite of all this, I loved this book!
The heoine in the story had realistic downfalls and talents, and the supporting characters were very believable. I had an idea of the ending, but it deffinitley had a nice twist. The camp kind of reminded me of The first half of "Parent Trap" with the adorable pranks and camp spirit.
I don't want to ruin the ending of this cute book, but the ending ties together loose strings, but also teases you with the idea of next summer!
Rock on Sleepaway Girls, rock on!

Super Cute...

Sam is sick of hearing her best friend, Mal and her boyfriend, Mark calling each other "pookie" and being the third wheel. So, Sam decides to apply to be a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines camp in the New York Catskills. Sam soon figures out that camp isn't what it seems. She quickly become enemies with Ashley, the queen bee and daughter of the camp's owner. Sam starts having a crush on the very flirtatious, Hunter. She also has playful and oh-so-comfortable, Cole. Sam luckily finds a gang of girls that she becomes very quick friends of, and they call each other, Sleepaway Girls.
I really liked Sleepaway Girls. It was cute and a quick summer read. The characters were real and multidimensional. Calonita brings her writing style from The Secrets of My Hollywood Life series to this fun book. I also felt like I was back at camp. It is a must read for summer.

And Another Book Read's Reviews

Sam is not crazy about spending the summer as a third wheel, with her best friend Mal and her new boyfriend listening to the sounds of "pookie" and "sweetie." Looking for a way to get out, Sam finds a job as a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines camp in the New York Catskills. Never having been to camp before she expects a somewhat idyllic experience, but what she gets is something she would never have guessed in a million years.

When Sam gets to camp things start to go downhill fast and she's not sure if the summer will turn out as great as she was expecting it to. First there is Ashley, the resident queen bee of Whispering Pines, and then there is the absolutely hot and flirtatious counselor Hunter, who is not as innocent as he seems, and then there is Cole, who is just too funny and always teasing Sam, but he's just a friend, or at least that's what she wants to think. There are some highlights to her days though, such as: her new cabin friends who brighten her day and then the cute campers that she helps out with. How will Sam's summer camp experience turn out? No one, not even her, knows.

This book was a really fun look at summer camp. By the time I was finished with SLEEPAWAY GIRLS I was ready to pack my bags and head off to camp too! It's a great book for a car ride or the beach or any other fun summery activity.

The plot was fun and real and made you feel those mosquito bites, just like Sam. At times though it was a bit repetitive and dragged on. The characters were interesting. I felt that Sam really needed to stand up for herself, as it got boring when she kept getting stepped on and didn't do anything. Cole was always there to make the reader laugh and Ashley was your perfect, pure evil villain.

Overall I liked this book. The ending was a bit predictable, but the setting of the book was impeccable. This is a great book for all aged young adult readers as they will get lost in the fun of summer camp and all the drama that it brings!
