Description

Julie Prestsater is the author of the Double Threat series, You Act So White, and a few adult romances. She is also a high school reading intervention teacher who spends most of her free time, when she's not writing, relaxing with her family or reading young adult books.

Features & Highlights

  • In this fun-filled, fast-moving young adult novel, sassy fourteen-year-old Megan Miller, and her close-knit friends, begin their four year high school journey. Expectations and hopes are high for their Freshman year. Meggie wants nothing more than to experience all high school has to offer – growing freedom, hot boys, parties, make-out sessions, and did I mention hot boys? Enter Alex Aguilar. At seventeen, he is Carver High’s sports superstar and dreamy superstud. Yet, despite the hype, Alex is undeniably sweet, and Meggie is beyond smitten. But, of course, he is a SENIOR. So, ought to be completely off limits for a ninth grader, right? Age doesn’t always dictate whom you will love, though. So I’m A Double Threat is the start of their journey. Will young love survive the challenges presented them or is friendship all they can only really hope for? Backs will be stabbed, hearts will be broken, tears will be shed. But, despite this, Meggie’s strong-willed determination, loyalty, and zest for fun, will ensure the ride is a memorable one. (This book has mature content intended for older young adult audiences.)

Not Appropriate for Young Teens

I sent this to my 14 year old granddaughter after reading the reviews. Her comment to me was she thought it might be like "Fifty Shades of Grey" (which she hasn't read but has heard comments about). This child is what I would call "pretty worldly" but her parents haven't allowed her to read this kind of book.

Not my style

I'm not sure why I didn't like So I'm a Double Threat. Possibly because it reminded me of the very worst parts of high school. Possibly because none of the characters were likable. Really. None of them. Not one person in this book is someone I would like to hang out with, especially not if I were in high school. Alex gets an "almost likable", but that's pretty much it. I feel like I must have missed something because this book got such great reviews on Goodreads, but I'm not going to reread to see what it was.

I have to say this author did a great job at showing the ups and downs of high school and the pressure kids go through to fit in. I loved Alex and hated him all at once. I rooted for him to be with Megan the whole time but that's not how it went. I refuse to give spoilers but what I can say is I couldn't put this book down.

I was honestly just hoping not to hate it...then I read it.

Okay, let me preface this review by saying that this book was written by a friend of mine and that no matter how it turned out I was prepared to give it a positive review and recommendation. Then the book arrived and I learned that the premise of the story is about a girl's high school experience of her freshman year. I'm a 35 year old guy who grew up as the oldest of 4 boys. I have 3 sons and 1 daughter. I read and hated the Twilight books and readily admit to having NO understanding of the female mind. I was honestly just hoping not to hate it.

Then I read it...

And I have to admit that I really enjoyed it. I absolutely love books that are heavy on characters and dialogue and this book hit a home run on that. And not just flowery prose but real conversation. I realize that style isn't for everyone but I thoroughly enjoyed the "real" dialogue which served as the foundation for this story.

Another part for me that was personally entertaining was the ode to our high school years. I recognized so much of our Chaffey-isms in the story. From the early morning ditching to the Steel Grill (Iron Skillet) to the orange and black of the Carver Bengals (orange and black Chaffey Tigers). Not too mention trying to determine which teachers were based off of the ones we had.

Lastly, the breadth of teen issues the book tackles was both refreshing and frightening. Ditching classes, profanity, sexual themes, alcohol use, drug use and parental interaction...this book had it all. I have a daughter about 6 years away from being a freshman and I think I am hoping that she will be a cross between Meg and Steph...

Bottom line: Read this book and you'll enjoy it! And lest you all think I'm full of it and doing what I said I wouldn't...I'm already on Chapter 5 in the sequel "Double Threat My Bleep."
