Description

I was inspired to write SOPHIE WASHINGTON: THE SNITCH when one of my kids didn't want to return to school after a holiday. A bully had been terrorizing several children in the class, but the students were afraid to report what was going on because they didn't want to be labeled "snitches." After asking around I realized that many of the children actually believed they were doing the correct thing by not tattling on the bully, despite the fact that he had threatened them with physical harm.xa0I want kids who read SOPHIE WASHINGTON: THE SNITCH to understand that it's okay to ask adults for help when they need it and that suffering at the hands of bullies is not the way to be popular. SOPHIE WASHINGTON: THE SNITCH deals with a serious topic, but like the other books in the Sophie Washington middle grade series for children ages 8-12, there are plenty of humorous moments too. I hope that readers will be entertained and even laugh out loud while they learn gentle lessons with Sophie and friends. Dealing with typical school issues

I am leading a book club of six 2nd grade girls who are reading the Sophie Washington series. I can tell they love the series because every spare moment in class they are reading Sophie Washington. I bought one set so their reading is dependent on their friend completing the next in the series. When one girl is finished, she is encouraging another to finish so she can read the next book!
Thank you for writing a great series about a family and Sophie ‘s adventures..

From a Teacher/Education Consultant

I’m so glad that Sophie Washingtion: The Snitch depicts a 5th grade black student as the main character! There is a continued need for children of color to see people like themselves in literature, in main roles. This book does that by addressing a (sadly) regular school occurence: bullying. The plot covers examples of bullying behavior and ways the Sophie and her friends try to deal with it until realizing they need the help of adults. The complexity of the text would be best for advanced 2nd grade readers up to 4th grade level. The structure of the story compliments literal comprehension that students of these levels should work on and addresses the issue of bullying in a straightforward way. It would be great as a first or early example about what bullying is and how to deal with it.

A book all young readers should read

I bought this book for my 8 year old daughter. I thought it would be a good summer read. We started reading this book 6-5-19 we only read up to chapter four. I decided we would continue reading 6-11/12-19. My daughter kept saying mommy keep reading. I didn’t realize it was midnight. That’s how much she enjoyed this book. We finish already. She’s asking already to buy book 4. I love the fact that it has a message it send to young readers. Definitely won’t be disappointed.

Great message on Bullying!

Our girls just finished reading this and this book gives a great pathway to really discussing bullying with your children. My daughter was able to give me a rundown on everything that happened in the book and was also able to tell me how she would have handled these situations. I could tell that her little mind was really able to jump into the characters' shoes and place herself right there in those moments. Afterwards, the book club that she is a part of even performed a skit using portions of this book as their scripts. This even further drilled into them how horrible bullying is and got them to discussing how they would handle any future situations that may involve bullying. Great read according to my 8 year old!!
