Description

"Smart, action-packed, and utterly addictive!"― New York Times best-selling author of Aurora Rising Amie Kaufman ""This is a lively tale of romance, space pirates, conspiracy, and made (as opposed to genetic) families. Over the course of the book, all the characters round out nicely, as does the romance.... Landers has a firm hand on the plot, which includes a rousing fight scene or two, as well as a nifty twist at the end."― Booklist "Teens will be bracing themselves during the swashbuckling space pirate action scenes and an over-the-top climax as Doran's childhood history is revealed. A great choice for fans of raw sci-fi action, reminiscent of the lawlessness presented in the television series Firefly."― SLJ Praise for Alienated : "Landers successfully uses the familiar forbidden-romance plot as a means for exploring larger social, ecological, and ethical issues in this tense, fast-paced read."— Booklist "A perfect blend of sizzling romance, action, and suspense."— #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Jennifer L. Armentrout "A thought-provoking take on a familiar story of integration. Fans...who like their star-crossed lovers served up with a side of sci-fixa0will find this satisfying and relish the possibility of sequels."— BCCB Praise for Invaded : "Filled with intrigue and suspense, this book will appeal to both sci-fi and contemporary YA fiction fans."— VOYA "Readers will love the seamless blend of suspense, humor, and romance set against an interstellar landscape. Dual narratives and a tightly plotted mystery keep the suspense running high, and the chemistry between Aelyx and Cara smolders. This is a fun, genre-blending series that is sure to appeal to a wide audience and will only gain traction as it continues."— Booklist Melissa Landers is a former teacher who left the classroom to pursue other worlds. A proud sci-fi geek, she isn't afraid to wear her Princess Leia costume in public—just ask her embarrassed kids. She lives outside Cincinnati in the small town of Milford, Ohio, where she writes romantic space adventures for teens and the young at heart.

Features & Highlights

  • Fast-paced adventure, found family, intrigue, and enemies-to-lovers romance combine in an action-packed young adult novel for fans of
  • Firefly.
  • Solara Brooks needs a fresh start, someplace where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. Still, off-world travel doesn't come cheap, and Solara is left with no choice but to indenture herself in exchange for passage to the outer realm. She just wishes it could have been to anyone besides Doran Spaulding, the rich, pretty-boy quarterback who made her life miserable in school. The tables suddenly turn when Doran is framed for conspiracy on Earth, and Solara cons him into playing the role of her servant on board the Banshee. Given the price on both Doran and Solara's heads, it may just be the safest place in the universe. It's been a long time since Solara has believed in anyone, and Doran is the last person she expected to trust. But when the Banshee's dangerous enemies catch up with them, Solara and Doran must come together to protect the ship that has become their home—and the eccentric crew that feels like family.

Hated it.

Sigh.

This is the worst book I’ve read in a long time. I actually forced myself to finish it (and it was painful), because I have this thing about finishing books I start...

Anyway, here’s a few reasons why I’m not a fan.

1) It’s overwritten. That in itself is ridiculously distracting, and I have a really hard time believing that an editor worth his/her brass actually passed this on for publication. It’s THAT bad.
2) I feel absolutely no connection to the characters whatsoever. Towards the end, one of the characters dies, and it’s clear that the reader is supposed to have some sort of emotional response to it, but I found myself simply not caring. It’s obvious that the author believed they were attempting to create some sort of connection, but it fell completely flat.
3) Yeah...this is so unrealistic it’s silly. If you like cheesy romance with no substance or even clearly fake sci-fi movies from the ‘70’s, maybe this is for you.

TL;DR: Its terrible. Don’t waste your time.

good characters not a great plot

I really like the characters in this. It takes a bit to really like the main two as they are both horrible in the beginning. But by the end I started to care for them and truly like the relationship between them. I like the idea of the side characters but never really felt connected to them enough. They could have disappeared and I wouldn’t have noticed so I really wanted more from them. But the problem I had most with this book was the plot. It just felt all over the place and I lost interest in it and this world pretty quickly.

This book had everything...

Humor, pirates, conspiracy, camaraderie, adventure, action, science, and a dash of romance... Loved it!! I love a little sarcasm and humor in my characters. The science fiction aspect of this was respectable as well. Even though this is YA I think it holds its own as a sci-fi book. The author didn't have to force the romance down our throats either which is always good. It felt very organic.

Read it! READ IT! I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Starflight is unlike anything you'll ever read. I know alot of readers who hate predictability but this book is so much more than that. Melissa Landers manages to twist this book in a 360 and it is done so well, that you'll fall in love with these characters. Solara, she's a fighter. I loved her strength in the search to find something of her own (you'll know it when you read it) and it's got to do so much more than just her. I know plenty of readers who hate "all about me" thing but Solara is nothing like that. The moment her world changes, those around her become just as important as she is. They help built the world of Starflight so well and it really sets you up for Starfall.
The two main characters in this story grow, they gain confidence and find something in themselves that they didn't know they were capable of and the people around them teach them something new, about themselves and life. And some fans might even like those characters more. I can read this book again and again and I know I won't be disappointed because it's amazing. For fans who haven't started reading about space, time and distant planets this is a great book to introduce those books with adventure, romance and alot of badass action! Did I mention pirates? Disruptive parents who your really going to wanna kick in the face? And a princess and bounty hunters?

Great hard turned love story set in space

Starflight is a mildly sci-fi-y, futuristic novel with great squad goals and a hate turned love romance. Solara has aged out of an orphanage, and she’s desperate to reach the outer realm to start a mechanic job. She convinces Doran, an enemy from school, to take her on as an indentured servant, so she can gain free passage on a huge tourist vessel. With a little trickery and a stun gun, she gets Doran to believe that he is the servant. They join up with an unlikely captain and his crew, thus beginning a wild adventure.

The beginning of this book almost reminded me to Titanic in space, but it quickly shifted into more of a Firefly type feel. It’s written in third person, so the romance wasn’t too angsty. The banter between Solara and Doran immediately drew me in. Then once I got attached to the characters, I was routing for them the whole way.

This book is the first in a series, and while I cannot wait for the next book, there isn’t a cliffhanger at the end, so I didn’t mind that the next book hasn’t been published yet.
