Description

From Publishers Weekly Even though psychic Cassie Neill has traveled more than 3,000 miles away from Los Angeles, she finds that she cannot escape her destiny, any more than victims can escape the serial killer stalking the small town of Ryan's Bluff, N.C. Having retreated to an isolated home left to her by an aunt she never met, Cassie thinks she may have found peace at last. Her psychic ability to connect with the minds of killers and to see through their eyes has allowed Cassie to save lives, while all but destroying her own. Ryan's Bluff seems like the perfect hideaway, but it is not long before Cassie is plagued by visions once again. Cassie knows that local officials will be skeptical of her abilities, particularly since her aunt, also a psychic, was considered the town eccentric. So she goes to Judge Ben Ryan for help. When her claims that a murder is about to take place prove true, cynical town sheriff Matt Dunbar grudgingly accepts her help. In spite of occasional stiff dialogue and some clich?d language, Hooper (Haunting Rachel) constructs a fast-paced, suspenseful plot in this first book of her new series. She does a skillful job of making Cassie's psychic abilities seem like fact rather than fiction, explaining carefully how it is that Cassie can enter the mind of a serial killer and how she might get trapped there. And while the budding romance between Cassie and Ben is awkward and their dialogue seems forced, the story's complicated and intriguing twists and turns keep the reader guessing until the chilling ending. (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist The first in a planned "thrill-ogy" of suspense novels, this is a serial killer tale charged with deeply felt dread and romance that will steal readers' hearts. Cassie Neill has inherited a psychic gift from her mother that is a mixed blessing at best because it enables her to enter the minds of serial rapists and killers. From her aunt, she inherits a house tucked away in a corner of quiet little Ryan's Bluff, North Carolina, where she takes refuge, hoping to distance herself from the grueling work she's done for the Los Angeles Police Department. But, just as there's no rest for the weary, there's no rest for the wicked either, and visions of a deranged man's plans to kill prompt Cassie to visit Ben Ryan, the small town's prosecuting attorney. Skeptical but interested, Ben finds himself drawn toward the oddly bewitching Cassie, just as she is pulled ever further into the psychotic soul of evil. You mean ghosts? UFOs? ESP?""Specifically extrasensory perception. Telepathy. Precognition." Her voice remained calm but she was sitting just a bit too stiffly and her clasped fingers moved nervously. She darted another glance at him, so fleeting that all he caught was a flash of those pale eyes.Ben shrugged. "In theory I always thought it was just garbage. In fact, I've never encountered anything to make me change my mind." It was the fairly cynical mind common to many law enforcement officials, but he didn't add that. She didn't look discouraged. "Are you willing to admit the possibility? To keep your mind open?""I hope I'm always willing to do that." Ben could have told her that he himself was give to hunches, to intuitions he found difficult to explain rationally, but he said nothing since it was a characterisitc that he hardly trusted. By training and inclination he was a man of reason.Still utterly matter-of-fact, Cassie said, "There's going to be a murder."She had surprised him again, unpleasantly this time. "I see. And you know that because you're psychic?"She grimaced, registering the disbelief—and the suspicion of a prosecutor—in his voice. "Yes.""You can see the future?" "No. But I ... tapped into the mind of the man who intends to commit a murder.""Even assuming that, intentions don't always translate into actions.""This time they will. He will kill."Ben rubbed the back of his neck as he stared at her. Maybe she was a kook. Or maybe not. "Okay. Who's going to be murdered?""I don't know. I saw her face when he watched her, but I don't know who she is."Ben frowned. "When he watched her?"She hesitated, her thin face tightening. Then she said, "I was .. in his mind for only a few seconds. Seeing with his eyes, listening to his thoughts. He's been watching her and he's decided to kill her. Soon.""Who is he?""I don't know.""Wait a minute, you claim you were inside the guy's head, but you don't know who he is?""No." She answered patiently, as though to an oft-repeated question. "Identity isn't a conscious thought most of the time. He knows who he is, so it wasn't something he was thinking about. And I didn't see any part of him, not his hands, or his clothing—or his reflection in a mirror. I don't know who he is. I don't knwo what he looks like.""But you know he's going to kill someone. A woman.""Yes."Ben drew a breath. "Why didn't you go to the sheriff?""I did, last week. He didn't believe me.""Which is why you came to me.""Yes."Ben picked up a pen and turned it in his fingers. "What do you expect me to do about it?""Believe me," she answered simply. For the first time she looked squarely at him.Ben felt as if she had reached across the desk and placed her hand on him. It was a warm hand.He drew a breath, holding her gaze with his own. "And assuming I can bring myself to do that? Is there anything you can tell me that might stop this murder from taking place?""No. Not ... yet." She shook her head, unblinking."I may see more. I may not. The fact that I connected to him without holding something that he touched, without knowing him, is unusual. It must have been the ... intensity of his thoughts and plans, his eagerness that reached out to me. Maybe I did touch something he had touched without knowing it. Or maybe he was pysically nearby, and that's why I was able to steal the shadows—" She broke off abruptly and looked down once more.He missed that warm hand. It was another surprise."Steal the shadows?"Reluctantly Cassie said,"It's what I call it when I am able to slip into a killer's mind and pick up bits and pieces of what he's thinking, planning. Their minds tend to be dark .. filled with shadows." Her fingers were really working now, their nervous energy in stark contrast to her calm face and voice"You've done this before?"She nodded. ORIGINAL AND FAST-PACED

Psychic Cassie Neill has made a career of helping the L.A. police department catch killers-a career that she puts aside after a terrible mistake leaves a child dead.
Cassie decides to start over by moving to the small town of Ryan's Bluff, but to her surprise, a killer is loose in the town, and Cassie has tapped into his mind-seeing the victims...before, during and after their deaths.
For fear no one will believe her, Cassie, turns to the one man she thinks she can trust, judge Ben Ryan.
Not knowing what to think, Ben is intrigued by Cassie's story, and when some local girls start turning up dead he realizes he will need her help to stop this monster.
Combining the story line of the killer, and some mysterious history to Cassie's family past; "Stealing Shadows" keeps readers guessing until the end. It is a fast-paced novel that will undoubtly be read in one sitting.
Kay Hooper is making the jump into thriller territory ruled by Tami Hoag, and she is making this jump successfully.
Readers will enjoy this novel, and look forward to the next two in the series being released in October and November.

Unbelievable!

Kay Hooper has always been an excellent author, but she has outdone herself in Stealing Shadows. Ms. Hooper is apparently making her move from romance to thriller in an exciting book that will keep you glued to an explosive story that involves an intriguing cast of characters.
Psychic Cassie Neill moves to a small, secluded town in North Carolina from L.A. after she misreads the mind of a serial killer that results in the death of an innocent child. Blaming herself, she wants to isolated herself from the world and never be called upon to experience the terror she feels when using her psychic ability to enter the mind of a killer. Her aunt, who had spent the last twenty years hiding from the world because of her own psychic abilities has left her a house in the isolated countryside upon her death. Luck goes against Cassie as she begins to experience visions of a madman who is about to begin a killing spree. Cassie, knowing what skeptism is instored for her, goes to the local sheriff and prosecutor trying to warn them of what is ahead. Expressing doubt and disbelief, they are stunned to find out Cassie is right. There is a serial killer amid their small town stalking and brutally murdering women.
Kay Hooper has written one of the best novels I've read this year--if not the best. It amazes me how she has taken such a large, complex cast of characters, intertwined their lives, and still maintained the high level of terror and suspence in the plot. The suspense in this book never lets up. I'm glad there are two more novels folloing this one. I can't wait to see what Ms. Hooper has instored for her readers.
Grab this book, isolate yourself for a couple of hours, and get ready for one of the most exciting stories you'll ever read.

....very well indeed....

When I first read the back of this book, I scoffed at the idea that an author would be able to successfully make a plot like this work. A psychic who runs across country to forget her past and finds herself in the midst of the same thing she was trying to escape? How appropriate. An attraction to the extremely handsome district attorney who is helping to solve the case. Where have I heard this before? It may be formulaic at best and trite at worst, but I could not put this book down. The pace was very fast, the suspense non-stop and the villian not an easy one to unmask. Kay Hooper seems to have found a very nice niche when it comes to the genre of romantic suspense novels and it seems to be one that fits her very well indeed.

A SMASHING SMOLTERING THRILLER!

The was my second Kay Hooper novel and it was one of my favorite novels that I have ever read. I found it incredibly interesting that the whole book revolved around the "psychic" way of solving crimes. That was so cool! Not many authors have their protaganists, such as Cassie Neill, someone who can predict murders before they even happen. My eyes were transfixed to the pages the whole time. I can not wait until HIDING IN THE SHADOWS comes out on October 3 and for OUT OF THE SHADOWS coming out on October 31. Both of these novels include FBI Agent Noah Bishop from Stealing Shadows. Kay Hooper has definitely made it to my favorite author list!

Another Fast-Paced Read!!

Ms. Hooper is an automatic buy for me when it comes to her romantic paranormal suspense reads. As per usual I've come to this series in a roundabout way but lo and behold I seem to have picked this series up in order.

Cassie Neill is a psychic that just wants peace and quite in her life. After a case goes bad she runs as far and as fast as she can to North Carolina. Here she finds a small little town and the peace that she seeks. Or at least she did until a serial killer starts hunting in her backyard and killing neighbors. This is all bad enough until the killer connects with Cassie. Now she feels obiligated to help and goes to Ben Ryan hoping he will understand her talents and accept her help.

Ben Ryan is drawn to Cassie. He knows that she is the real deal and he doesn't want her tangling with the mind of a serial killer. Unfortunatly what he wants and what he gets are two different things. Now as more and more dead bodies turn up and the fear and anger of the town increases his self appointed job of keeping Cassie safe is getting harder and harder to achieve. Than the unexpected happens will Ben be able to save the life of the first woman he's ever loved?

This was a very fast-paced read and it goes without say that the storyline was unique and engrossing. Ms. Hooper is a truly talented author and her characters are larger than life and very vivid. As a result the reader will easily be transport to Ryans Bluff, North Carolina and the make believe world that Ms. Hooper has created.

Absolutely wonderful.

Psychic Cassie Neill's hard won peace in Ryan's Bluff, North Carolina, was shattered when she accidently connected with a local murderer before his first killing. District Attorney Ben Ryan knew Cassie could help find the multiple murderer, but at what cost to Cassie?
Hooper has a wonderful talent in portraying paranormal talents and activities (see any of her old LOVESWEPT books). Her logic and careful restrictions are understandable. The chemistry between Cassie and Ben is there, but their relationship was developed slowly and correctly. Hooper is one of the few former LOVESWEPT authors who have kept me eagerly looking forward to her next book. As much as I loved Matt and Ben, the two main men in the book, I found FBI agent Bishop intriguing. His story will be concluded in the third book of this trilogy, OUT OF THE SHADOWS. I can't wait!

OKAY, So The Olympics Took A Back Seat To This One!

I curled up in my easy chair, turned on the Olympics and then picked up Stealing Shadows...thinking I would read during the commercials. WELL...guess what? I watched the Olympics only when I got scared and had to take a breather from the book. I loved this one. Never having been a believer in psychic abilities (I've never called up the Psychic Hotline), this book almost made a believer out of me. Have already ordered the next one, Hiding in the Shadows.
Cassie Neill is a pitiful, precious, fragile, haunted young woman trying to escape her "abilities" and the terror and heartache that accompany them. She moves to a quiet little town and is immediately plunged into the middle of a serial killer's escapades. She wants to help catch him, so she works with the sheriff who thinks she's nuts...and on and on it goes. Of course, she proves everyone wrong about her abilities.
Trust me, you will love this. To say anymore about the plot would give it away. Needless to say I don't know who won springboard diving and don't care!

Spooky Stuff

Cassie Neill is a psychic who makes a mistake while helping the L.A. police try to catch a killer. Her mistake results in the death of a child, for which Cassie blames herself. When her aunt dies and leaves her a house in Ryan's Bluff, North Carolina, Cassie moves in, hoping to distance herself from police work and notoriety. Her hopes are dashed, however, when she inadvertently enters the mind of a killer and "sees" his horrifying plans. Intent on stopping the murder before it happens, she goes to Sheriff Matt Dunbar, who doesn't believe her, and then to the local prosecutor, Ben Ryan. Ben is skeptical but willing to listen with an open mind. Ben not only becomes a believer when the first body turns up, but becomes Cassie's defender when his friend the sheriff is openly suspicious of her. As the killer becomes bolder, the danger to Cassie escalates as the sheriff learns to trust her and rely on her for clues to the killer's identity. This chilling page-turner is scary as all get-out, and I will definitely be looking for more of Kay Hooper's books.

Stealing Shadows Review

I am obviously in the minority here but I found this book predictable. The characters were wooden - no surprises. The main character seems to answer in the same monotone no matter what the situation or addressee. None of the characters, including the serial killer, were compelling. Events and relationships seem thrown in, just to have them there. I love this genre and was looking for a substitute because my favorite author's last two offerings were a departure from her usual page-turner's (and you know who you are Patricia Cornwell) Sorry to the fans! I am glad so many people enjoy these.

No one is smart enough to solve the mystery until some lucky psychic visions at the end. The relationship didn't draw me in.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This is primarily a mystery. There is a developing relationship, but it's not romantic. She has her visions and is tired most of the time. He is emotionally distant. All of a sudden they have sex. There was no personality, chemistry, interesting interaction or romance. I wasn't emotionally drawn in.

The mystery was not that good. Cassie has psychic connections to killers and to victims. But for most of the story, her visions don't help catch or prevent anything. She is in the mind of the killer while he kills, but she can't tell the police enough so they can stop or catch the killer. However, she is always able to tell them where the body is afterwards. I was frustrated with all these partial visions that never worked. In one case, they gave Cassie the victim's glove, and Cassie was able to tell where the body was. Why didn't the sheriff give the glove to Cassie as soon as he knew who was missing? Cassie couldn't see through the killer's mind, but she could have used the glove to see the location sooner and maybe something else through the victim's mind. I prefer mysteries with someone doing smart and clever things to catch a killer. No one did anything smart here. They just waited for Cassie to have more informative and more timely visions toward the end of the book. Characters and dialogue were ordinary.

STORY BRIEF:
Cassie is a psychic in California who helps police catch serial killers. She can enter others' minds and describe what they are thinking, feeling and seeing. Her visions take a lot of energy and make her tired. Cassie's Aunt Alex dies and leaves her North Carolina home to Cassie. Cassie moves there and hopes to have a break from killers. Unfortunately someone starts killing women in the area. Cassie tells Sheriff Matt about her visions, but he doesn't believe her. So Cassie goes to Ben the local judge and tells him. After further incidents, Matt starts paying attention to her. Cassie and Ben become attracted to each other.
