Another great branches title

My six year old son is a good reader but it’s hard to find books that challenge his reading while also keeping him engaged. He likes magic tree house, for example, but mostly for me to read to him. This book was just challenging enough, he likes the story, and the more frequent pictures seem to keep him reading longer. Excellent early chapter book!

Poorly written

We usually enjoy Scholastic books very much. This particular series though is very poorly written. Everything is written in present tense. Vocabulary is basic. I have a 1st grader who is just getting to enjoy chapter books and I want him to be challenged (to a reasonable extent), not dumbed down. I would recommend instead the excellent The Last Firehawk, or Dragon Masters.

book review

{My thoughts} – This book was amazing. I mean, who doesn’t love a book that blasts them back into a retelling of a favorite story. Chase and Ava are at a flea market and they end up getting their hands on a suitcase. The suitcase seems to be somewhat magical. They touch an object in it that looks like a dragon doorknob and the next thing they know is they are dropped smack dab into the Medieval Times.

In this book they are meant to correct somethings that had happened that shouldn’t have, or stop something from happening that may have happened. Once they start to understand where they are and what is going on they figure out what to do and in the end it seems like everything works out in the end. Once things are done on that adventure they figure out how to get back into their time. Once they are home they both agree not to tell their parents until they figure out what is going on and what to do about everything that is going on in terms of time jumping.

I highly recommend this book for any child that is just beginning to read and wanting to expand their imagination. It is a nicely written book with some illustrations that help to further explain the storyline.

Early reader mystery

A nice book for early readers. Every chapter ends with a mystery. My daughter reads more complicated books but she also liked the suspense of this one. I like that the characters are kind to each other and work together to solve the mystery.

Fun story for early readers!

Fun story though pretty predictable. The use of present tense caught me for a sec but maybe chapter books are written more in that tense these days. Not sure. Interesting circumstances the young protagonists are thrown into though. I'd like to read book two. Early readers would like it!

Easy to read and engaging

I really liked this early reader book. I learned some things about King Author and his court that I didn't know. I will be looking to get other books for my granddaughters and my grandson. The book was easy to read and very engaging.

Time Travel series for newly independent readers

Scholastic's Branches line is a great collection of books for newly independent readers who are advancing past beginning readers but not quite ready for middle grade novels. In general, I love the Branches books. They include a variety of genres and use a variety of storytelling methods from diary entries to traditional prose to cartoon/prose hybrid. While I'm sure Time Jumpers will have many fans among young readers, It's not my favorite of the Branches books. It feels like a thin imitation of the Magic Treehouse books. The first book in a series is always difficult because you have to take up valuable writing space with introductions and the Branches books aren't very long to begin with. So I think author Wendy Mass did an admirable job of telling a creditable tale in the space allowed. But as an adult, the convenient coincidences and small inaccuracies were a bit annoying. They may not bother children at all. (I mean, who ever heard of closets in a medieval castle?) I am hopeful that future stories may improve. In the meantime, if you have a young reader that enjoys the Magic Treehouse books or maybe the branches series Dragon Masters, they may also enjoy this new series of time travel stories with brother-sister duo Chase and Ava.
