Description

“As a two-time testicular cancer survivor, taking care of my mind, body, and soul became paramount since the ripe old age of 25. Alana Collins’s book is both essential and rewarding for all of us wanting to live our best lives, for the rest of our lives.” —Joe Fresta, Chairman, cancercarefoundation.net “As a fitness professional who works with older adults (65+), I found Strength Training Over 40 to be very clear, concise, and factual. The illustrations are a wonderful addition, and I was able to follow along easily. I recommend this book to seniors to help build healthy habits.” —Kelly Nygard, Nygard Fitness LLC, DBA Live 2 B Healthy “As a former national-level fitness competitor now in my 40s, I appreciate Alana's focus on strength rather than the scale . She says, if we focus on strength, everything else will fall into place, which I find to be refreshing and a much healthier and sustainable way to train! I love it!” —Shelly Lynn Hughes, Founder of Fresh Magazine and Partner in Project Her, Inc. “Alana Collins created an outstanding strength training program/guide for men and women over 40. This masterpiece of a book covers all the bases, from physical fitness to strength training, nutrition, and how the combination of them all leads to overall brain health . As a 48-year-old veteran who's had multiple surgeries and has a passion for being fit, this book is exactly what I need to get my body and mind right once again!” —Marcelino A. Magallanez, Jr., Retired US Navy Former Command Fitness Leader “This book tells you exactly how to keep your body strong, and I appreciate that it focuses on strength rather than being a certain size. It's a great way to hold yourself accountable while educating yourself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs help cutting through all the confusing fitness advice being thrown at us today.” —Yong E., lifestyle blogger over 50 Alana Collins is a Certified Fitness Coach based in Victoria, British Columbia, who works primarily with clients middle-aged and older. What a great book!

I love this book! Straightforward and easy to follow with great illustrations. A big plus is including a program to follow for several weeks to get you started and keep you motivated. There isn't a lot of the blah, blah, blah that is found in many books, talking on and on about unnecessary stuff. I don't like that. This one is just right. It also provides good basic advice on diet/nutrition. Such a great book. I highly recommend it.

this book is vary easy to follow and work with. The way it depicts the exercise is vary informative. I'm 73 and I do tie-chi and lift weight , so I bought this book as a supplement to my program. when I received my book I read through it and found it easy to work it into my program. buy the book, read it, start the program, log your progress and in 6 week see how you feel.. Great Buy. John B

The only strength training book you need.

I found this book to be an excellent guide for those who are a novice or an expert. Alana does a great job explaining which muscles are being worked. It does not matter if you have no equipment, resistance bands, or dumbbells. There is a section in the book for you. There are multiple exercises that focus on the same muscles ,so you should never get bored of doing the same exercise. Lastly, Alana stresses the importance of strength training as one gets older in order to prevent injuries and to fully maximize your body so that one can enjoy life .

Good for this 65 year old woman!

I like that the exercises are set up for at home and alternatives for the gym because I do not like going to a gym. I am starting off slower than what it say so it might take me longer than 6 weeks, but that is fine because the point is to continue on after the 6 weeks anyway. That is one of the advantages of this, is that I can do what works for me! It says to do the exercises 2 or 3 times a week but I would rather do them on most days and focus on legs one day and arms another day...so I am still doing them 2 or 3 times each week but not so many in one day. I
do better with an almost daily schedule than jut a couple of times a week. This is what works for me but following the plan the way it is written would be good for most people.

For the beginners

This is great for a beginner trying to get a routine in place. This is not good for an intermediate to advanced.
Very simple and easy to understand and follow.

Very basic and great foundational information

I have found the information helpful for planning a beginner weight lifting routine. Although my use has been from home, the author does include gym options for the workouts. Because I was more advanced than the starting point of this book, I skipped ahead to week five. However, it is laid out in such a way that it’s easy to use the book for planning on your own.

Great Book!

This book is easy to follow and has an excellent exercise plan for people like me that have abandoned strength training. I have been trying to get back into building my strength, and this book includes a wonderful 6-week program. In addition to the exercise program, I like to focus on individual muscle groups throughout the week, and this book provides good variations of strength building at home with minimal equipment, with resistance bands, and at the gym.

A great book to have to learn strength training!

The book is very well written and presented in a manner that it is very easy to use. The writer is a certified fitness coach and has taught strength training to women and men over 40. There are exercises to do before and after the strength training and even on days in between your strength training. Please follow it carefully so you do not injure yourself. You have choices of using bodyweight, dumbbells, resistance bands or gym machines to learn proper strength training techniques.
There is also a six week program to learn to build your muscles and agility. It is a great way to keep you mentally and physically fit so you could enjoy your life as you mature. I have already recommended it to many of my friends as well.

Meh…

It gives you basic workout information, but that’s about it. I guess I wanted more body-building information and this wasn’t it.
