Description

From Booklist Daniel Brasher, a San Francisco group counselor, finds an envelope addressed to someone else in his office mail, an envelope that contains what appears to be a death threat leveled at someone Daniel doesn’t know, and even more disturbing, the threat appears to have already been carried out. Soon more envelopes appear, and before you can say “this all sounds a little implausible,” Daniel is knee-deep in a murderer’s devilish plot, running a race against time to protect his family. You can always depend on Hurwitz to deliver the goods, but this time, uncharacteristically, the goods aren’t quite as exciting as they usually are. Nothing wrong with the story—except, perhaps, that extra dollop of implausibility—but it doesn’t have the same hyperrealistic feel, the same level of suspense and drama, as such earlier Hurwitz jewels as The Survivor (2012) and They’re Watching (2010). Compared to the author’s recent output, the book feels a little too slick. Still recommendable to his fans, and to readers who like a good ordinary-man-in-extraordinary-circumstances thriller, but it’s not prime Hurwitz. --David Pitt “Simply brilliant. Tell No Lies is infinitely more than a thriller, yet thrilling to the last page. Psychologically rich and often beautiful...A true page turner in which every phrase, every character, every little incident counts. Stylish, elegant, and absolutely riveting! An unforgettable read.” ― Anne Rice “Another winner from a top-tier thriller writer.” ― Kirkus Reviews “A great book for any reader who wants to be chilled and entertained at the same time.” ― Suspense Magazine “Menace, treachery, and intrigue have never been more exciting.” ― The Washington Post “A fast-paced roller coaster ride…well-written and extremely realistic.” ― Criminal Element “A rollercoaster ride that is going to make your stomach flip upside down two or three times before it's through...Equal parts thriller and mystery, Tell No Lies is built upon the finest elements of both genres.” ― The Book Reporter “Hurwitz has quickly established himself as one of the best writers in the genre. A unique variation on the ticking-clock thriller, written with a depth and nuance that gives everything meaning, and makes every character both satisfying and suspect. You'll be guessing right up until the end.” ― Louisville Courier-Journal “Gregg Hurwitz [has] written a string of excellent thrillers, but this one could be his best.” ― Winnipeg Free Press “Stunningly effective and original…Hurwitz keeps the suspense humming, the promise of his premise matched by his execution every step of the way in this superb psychological thriller.” ― Providence Journal “With a multiplicity of elements to praise, it's hard to know where to start first…The book exerts all the author's customary Ancient Mariner-like grip on the reader.” ― Crime Time Gregg Hurwitz is the critically acclaimed, internationally bestselling author of fourteen novels including, most recently, Trust No One and The Survivor. His books have been translated into twenty languages. In addition, he is a screenwriter, television producer, and writes for Marvel and DC Comics. He lives in Los Angeles. Read more

This should have been a good book

This should have been a good book. The "bones" of the story were great. Our hero is a counselor working with ex-cons with potential. He has a (Hispanic) wife (who lost a baby and had cancer and wants to be pregnant). He has an uppity upper-class mother (this was actually about the only interesting thread of the story). There's a serial killer targeting folks by letting our hero know before the act who they will be. And he suspects it's one of his clients. Even with the hackneyed characters, this could have been an engaging psychological thriller. And the author is capable of that kind of book. But this is an example of the sum of the parts being less than the whole. The book was a dull, evenly paced, cliched string of action scenes. I didn't care about anyone, even who the killer was (although I did guess it fairly early on.) I was actually angry at the insipid wife. And disbelieving that the cop (female) would involve a civilian as her partner. Not this author's best.

Borrrring!

My review is one word: boring! I skimmed the last third of this book, hoping it would get better because I have enjoyed previous Hurwitz novels. Not t his one. Ugh.

Another dynamite thriller from Hurwitz

I think I've read all of Hurwitz's books, have enjoyed them and this is my favorite among them all.

Hurwitz writes dynamite thrillers, fast paced and exciting with a big bang at the end. And "Tell No Lies" shows the author at the top of his form.

Daniel Brasher grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. His wife, Cristina, comes from a poor background. But he and Cristina decided they wanted to give back to their San Francisco community. Daniel is a counselor, leading group sessions with convicts on parole, and Cristina is trying to help a group of low-income people from being bought out of their homes by a mega corporation.

The action starts quickly in this tale and the speed just ramps up as you flip through the pages, trying to keep up.

GREAT character development - I felt like I could visualize them all and wanted to get to know most of them, even the ex-cons. Hurwitz creates a lot of empathy for his characters this time around.

Plotting - tight with no holes. It's an excellent idea for a novel and actually works.

This story will keep you guessing right up to the last pages. It's one of my favorite reads this year.

Another winner by Hurwitz!

As with his other books, Gregg Hurwitz wrote a heck of a great thriller again. There is no disputing the talents of this gifted man. Suspense and new twists at every corner. Just when you think you have figured out who the killer is, guess again! The characters were fully developed and I hope we read more about Daniel Brasher. His mother was quite the character, too, wit her arrogant ways as the richest woman in San Francisco. I thought his wife needed to be a stronger character but again her health was suffering. All in all, this was a great book to rrad!

To Sir With Love For Ex Cons

Daniel comes from a wealthy family lead by his cold and hypercritical mother. Relations become even icier when he marries his community organizer wife and turn positively glacial when he leaves his high paying and prestigious job to counsel ex-cons. Still leading the group sessions is immensely satisfying for Daniel but he finally decides to leave to set up a private practice. It is then he accidentally receives a threatening note meant for someone else. When the intended recipient winds up dead, Daniel realizes that the author is not kidding. When he receives more letters and is convinced that the police are not able to act, he intervenes placing him squarely in the crosshairs of a determined killer. As Daniel races to solve the mystery, he places his life and love in dire peril.

At his best, Gregg Hurwitz produces fast paced thrillers. When not on his game, he still churns out passable entertainment. This one is most definitely not his best. Daniel still enjoys the accoutrements of wealth and privilege making his rebellion against Mommy dearest half hearted. The mother is laughably one dimensional and the wife just annoying. The group sessions are unconvincing. The cons all have pathetically contrived street names and dialogue is forced. Even as they spew their vitriol, Daniel just knows that underneath are really good people who have been downtrodden by all those mean rich people. The sessions play like a parody of For Sir With Love The same old liberal social commentary was tedious and what is even worse, is that the perpetrator of the crimes is easily identifiable. While passable entertainment, it is a disappointment from an author who can do so much more.

Consistently great books

Greg Hurwitz is one of my favorite authors and this one does not disappoint. I received this book as a vine book, and thought I had reviewed it, but apparently the review did not go through. I am trying again.
It has been a awhile since I read it, but here goes.
I loved the main character, and again, a story of a normal man, caught up in a situation that tests his limits and puts him in a situation far from normal. There is a great mystery, every time I was sure I had the ending pegged, I was wrong.
I feel kind of bad since it has taken me so long to review the book, but I will tell you this. I could not put it down, and you will never go wrong reading a Greg Hurwitz book.

Not up to my expectations for Hurwitz

I have been a big fan of Hurwitz's other novels. Unfortunately, I found this one to be un-engageing due to a slow start. Though an effort at character development was made and some of the suspects bordered on interesting, I just found I didn't really care about the principles. Some of his earlier works; They're Watching, You're Next or The Crime Writer for example, are among some of my favorite page turners but this one didn't live up to what I know the author is capable of.

True Confessions on a Great Book

Daniel Brasher works as a therapist leading a group of violent offenders who are trying to get their lives back on track after being paroled. One night, he goes to check his department mail, and he finds a letter telling a complete stranger to “Confess what you did or you will bleed.” When he learns the man was brutally murdered, he freaks. But then he spots another envelope, and the deadline is just minutes away….

Gregg’s books are certainly not my normal cozy choice, but I really do enjoy them. The main reason is the compelling characters. These are real people; even the minor characters come alive. As a result, you can’t help but feel for them as they face the worst week of their lives.

Now that isn’t to say that the plot isn’t suspenseful and compelling. I never wanted to put the book down, and on more than one occasion, it kept me up late reading. One time even putting the book down didn’t help me go to sleep.

If you are looking for a taunt thriller, you’re in for a treat. This book will draw you in before you know it.

Better and better

Having been a fan of Hurwitz's for years I expect entertaining tales. This one kept me up from start to finish. Hurwitz has honed his craft to the point that there is never a wasted word. While holding my breath through some of the pages, I couldn't help but be reminded of every day I spent in San Francisco. It was a complicated love story to that great city, but with pimples and all.

A REAL THRILLER....

'Tell No Lies' is the first book that I've read by Gregg Hurwitz. Since it was not part of a series for any one character, it seemed a good starting point. Now, I am going to be going backward and reading more of Mr. Hurwitz's previous books.

'Tell No Lies' is pure thriller and I love books in this genre. This well-written, hard-to-put down novel offers everything a reader could want in a fiction thriller. The characters are well-formed. The story is tight and well delivered. I actually felt like I was watching a film, with all the heart-stopping suspense a good movie can provide, as I read 'Tell No Lies'. I literally found it nearly heart-stopping from page-to-page and difficult to put down.

Don't know how I have missed this author's work in the past, I will remedy that soon. This book is one of the best I have read in a long while and I highly recommend it to any book-lover who longs for a good read; one that pulls the reader in quickly and refuses to let go until the 'The End'. Three-hundred-sixty-nine pages of pure reading pleasure.
