G K Chesterton was born in London in 1874 and was educated at St Paul's School. He became a journalist and began writing for The Speaker with his friend Hilaire Belloc. Great book, but this edition is cheaply put together. Not so much as a publishing date. Just the bare bones book. Even has typos on the back cover.

The Christian and the atheist and the rest of the world

"The Ball and the Cross" is an enjoyable little read by G.K. Chesterton. In the novel, a fierce Catholic and a militant atheist attempt to wage a duel over a blasphemy committed against the Virgin Mary. Although the two begin as antagonists, they end as friends as both MacIan, the Catholic, and Turnbull, the atheist find themselves drawn together; only they take religion seriously, the rest of the world is apathetic. The last third of the book reminds one of "That Hideous Strength" by C.S. Lewis as GKC offers his criticism of an entirely "rationalistic", "progressive" and "scientific" worldview.

With GKC's characteristic wit present throughout the book, vivid imagery (particularly of sunrises and sunsets) and a host of bizarre characters, "The Ball and the Cross" will delight any Chesterton fan.
