Description

The Little Lights Berenstain Bear series helps children learn how God wants them to live every day It's spring cleaning time and Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear need to clean their playhouse. They are quickly distracted so Papa Bear steps in to teach them what the Bible has to say about finishing the job and doing their best. Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bears books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from his studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country. Mama, Papa, Brother, Sister, and even Honey all had jobs to do. "Uh-oh!" said Brother, looking inside the playhouse. "Spiders!" Sister and Honey peeked inside. Sure enough, there were some big, hairy spiders sitting in their webs up in the corners of the playhouse. Brother, Sister, and Honey hated spiders! "Yuck!" they all said. "What should we do?" asked Sister. (Continues...) Excerpted from The Berenstain Bears and a Job Well Done by Jan Berenstain Mike Berenstain Copyright © 2009 by Jan Berenstain. Since when are the Berenstain Bears religious?

I guess sometime in the 25-30 years between me reading these as a youngster and me reading them as a parent, something changed. I was reading along to my son when this line JUMPED out at me (on page 28 of 30):

"Did you know that the Bible has something to say about working hard and getting the job done?" asked Papa as they cleaned.

Huh? What? The Bible? Where did that come from? I was reading the Berenstain Bears, right? The bears where life lessons are learned from everyday experiences? Yeah, come to find out, they now have a religious tilt which I was certainly not expecting. And honestly, I like my books without that, thankyouverymuch. Next time, I will read the description MUCH more closely.

That said, the message is still good, the illustrations are nice, and the price is good, so I'm giving it three stars.

A little encouragement is always a good thing!

I just sat down and read this story with my kids. They all enjoyed it (ages 2,4, and 6). I was curious how Papa was going to be portrayed (because he is often an oaf and part of the conflict rather than part of the solution). In this story, all the bears have a job to do for spring cleaning. Papa and Mama both set about their tasks. Brother, Sister, and Honey start on their task, but then switch gears and start playing baseball. Papa shows a great example in the story by having compassion (hating spiders, too), but holding them accountable to doing their work.

My 6 year old said that this is a great story to encourage kids to do the jobs that they don't like doing. She thought parents would like reading this book to their kids and that the kids would like it, too.

Living Lights Series

"A Job Well Done" is part of The Berenstain Bears "Living Lights" series of books. This is a Christian series published by ZonderKidz (Zondervan).

In this book, Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear learn the importance of work and what the Bible has to say about work. Ecclesiastes 9:10 is on the opening page of the book, "whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might."

The illustrations are exactly what you expect from The Berenstain Bears - fun, bright, engaging. The story involves cleaning up for the spring, and the need to focus on your work instead of getting distracted or delayed by obstacles.

It is a delight to have a mainstream children's series engaging children in topics of Christian faith. Heartily recommend.

A Bit Plastic, But A Decent Christian Family Book

I remember the Bearenstein Bears from my childhood, but I never remembered them being so overtly religious. Mind you, ours is an evangelical Christian family, so I don't necessarily mind the religous content, but I prefer it to be a little more subtly integrated into the story.

For example, when the kid bears get caught goofing off, the parent bears comes by and scold them by saying, "It says in the Bible that God made work for us to do and there's nothing better than to enjoy your work".

If your family is comfortable with the framing of such dialog and the "do it because God said so" directness, you'll be fine, but I'd rather see something like the papa bear sitting down with kids and telling them a kid-friendly story about the hard work of ants described in Proverbs 6 or something (the ants who store all their food away in the summer). Such an approach would be both more entertaining and more effective, in my opinion.

Christian story is terrific addition to classic series

The Berenstain Bears and a Job Well Done by Jan & Mike Berenstain is part of the Living Lights series. First Mia's thoughts: I thought that the book had a good message: Do your chores before you take a break. I didn't know that the Bible talked about work, so it was kind of cool. My favorite pages was when Papa Bear caught Brother and Sister playing baseball, it was funny. Now my review. I was unaware that the Berenstain Bears offered a Christian line of books and was excited to read one. The story is true to the high quality of the original series. The family each has a chore to do for spring cleaning. For Brother, Sister, and Honey that means cleaning up the old playhouse in the backyard, but it's filled with spiders, and they are frightened and decide to just clean the exterior. When they find some baseball equipment, that derails their cleaning effort even further. I appreciated that when Papa discovered their play, he used the Bible to encourage them to work hard and stick to the job. The story is short but with a great message written in language that children will both understand and enjoy.

Wonderful storyline and message for children!

My kids loved this book, which I'm glad because it's one that I grew up on when I was younger! YAY! In BB and A Job Well Done, it's full of the colorful illustrations that flow wonderfully with the story and full of a powerful message from God for kids. In typical Brother, Sister, and now Honey bear fashion, they stray from what they are supposed to be doing or what they know is right, but in the end they get a lesson from the Bible about a job well done!

I recommend this old family favorite of mine with 5 stars to everyone who has a Sunday school class and children!

A nice book to instill the value of doing a good job

I thought this Berenstain Bears book was par for the course when compared to other titles in this series. The message in this story is that you should take pride in your work and do it well. There are three Biblical references in the book that went well with the story but may seem odd to readers who aren't used to seeing scriptural references in these books. This book is part of a group that has been written with a slightly overt Christian overtone. I've always felt that the Berenstain Bears carried a pretty sound Christian message, but I suppose it can be easily missed or dismissed when there aren't any obvious scriptural references.

My daughter who is nearly five loves this story. The day it arrived she had everyone in the house, including our visitors, read the book to her. The story has been read numerous times in the two weeks that it has been in our house.

I think that most children who are fans of the Berenstain Bears will enjoy this book.

Because of the scriptural references this book could easily be used in a Sunday School class. It clearly sends the message that doing your job well is what God wants you to do. This book could nicely complement a lesson that follows along that line of thinking.
