Description

"There is a big jump in reading comprehension skills from second grade, where many students are learning to read, to third grade, where students are reading to learn. The Big Book of Reading Comprehension Activities, Grade 3 addresses a variety of comprehension skills that are necessary for third graders to be successful . Braun has compiled a collection of highly engaging passages that cover multiple reading genres and are seamlessly aligned to the Common Core State Standards. As a 3rd grade teacher, who has taught 4th and 5th grade, I see the tremendous value of using The Big Book of Reading Comprehension Activities, Grade 3 in class to reinforce the skills necessary to be a well-rounded reader." —Gordon Johnson, 3rd grade teacher, Thornton, CO "It can be overwhelming as a teacher to find quality materials that meet all the standards for reading. The Big Book of Reading Comprehension Activities, Grade 3 provides an all-in-one source for practice that addresses every Common Core State Standard . I would recommend it to teachers and parents who want to provide extra reading practice for 3rd-graders. I especially love the diversity in both the passage topics and the illustrations." —Molly Cooper, former 3rd-grade teacher, Salt Lake City, UT "Kids will love working through the texts and activities in The Big Book of Reading Comprehension Activities, Grade 3 ! Many kids benefit from approaching a reading strategy in a variety of ways and this resource provides that kind of practice . This will be a big help to parents and teachers!" —Karla Fontana, MEd, Columbus, Ohio " This is a great resource for teachers or parents who are looking for short, kid-centered passages that focus in on standards-based skills . There is a written component with each passage that is engaging and will help students visualize the skill they are working on. This resource would be great for a guided reading group, because the skill being practiced is concise and the student response component would help a teacher do a quick check for understanding. It could also benefit parents looking for a way to help their students at home in a way that is not overwhelming." —Pamela Markgraf, 3rd-grade teacher, Thornton, CO HANNAH BRAUN writes curriculum for teachers and parents of elementary-aged children. She spent eight years as a classroom teacher and has two children of her own. Hannah loves to bring about “A-ha!” moments for kids by breaking down tricky concepts into digestible parts. Her previous books include the Learn to Read Activity Book and Learn to Read for Kids with Dyslexia .

I use this for testing

I use this to test apples to apples for our kids we tutor. Its eye opening. 99% of them flunked this basic comprehension test and they were 4th and 5th graders.

So now we are giving the kids these every week, to get them up to speed which the schools are failing at.

Excellent short paragraphs with all the answers there.

Great for advanced readers in lower grades

Overall the book was really well done. My daughter in kindergarten has read most of it. The passages cover a variety of topics in a range of styles. Most of the passages are really quite engaging, for my daughter at least. The variations in questions are also a refreshing change from some other reading comprehension books.

I just had 2 small issues with this book. The first is that there are occasional factual inaccuracies, especially in what might be called the “scientific” passages. This could have been avoided by obtaining the help of a scientifically literate reviewer. I would urge the author to avail herself of this opportunity in any future revisions.

The second issue is that in a handful of passages the author definitely promotes certain values that may be antithetical to what a child’s parents believe. For example 104 promotes the idea that kids should not have homework, while 107 suggests that there is too much testing in schools.

In other passages in the book, the thrust of the text is explicitly pointed out as the “author’s idea” - for example by having questions like “do you agree with the author’s point of view?”. But for the passages I mentioned, as well as a few others, this is not the case.

Stick with a true educational publisher

I bought this for my classroom. I thought it would be a fun mix of activities. I teach an accelerated class, but these activities are NOT meant to be done without an instructor.
I like how many different topics can be practiced— main idea, non-fiction, predictions, sequencing...
This is not an independent book. The “lessons” must be taught first.
Some of the directions are confusing.

This book helped raise my son’s reading level.

My son did not do too well with virtual school. So I decided to purchase this book to help with his reading and comprehension. He liked the stories and was able to answer the questions. We read every night and answered the questions. His teacher was thrilled at the results and so was I. Now, he is more confident and reads everything he sees.

This is our 2nd one of these! Love!

We also have the 2nd grade version of this. My daughter is in 3rd but her educational level is a little behind. We have been using the 2nd grade book and now want to try this one. It has little readings and activities that go along with the reading. It really us fun and great for reading and comprehension. There are writing activities, games, etc. Definitely recommend

Lame Lessons & Questions

It should have just been simple reading comprehension questions, instead they try to make lame games out of each story....one instruction actually has kids build a spinning device from a paperclip? It makes no sense....reading, then questions, that's the way to do it, we gave up on this book and tossed it.
