"Impossible to put down."xa0--Kathleen Antrim, bestselling author, Capital Offense "The nail-biting suspense will rivet you."xa0--RT Book Reviews, 4.5 stars, top pick"Breakneck speed doesn't even begin to describe the pace of The Bishop . Absolutely brilliant."xa0--Jeff Buick, bestselling author of Bloodline "[A] master storyteller at the peak of his game."-- Publishers Weekly "Impossible to put down."-- Kathleen Antrim , bestselling author, Capital Offense "An intense, intelligent thriller . . . Riveting!"-- Karen Dionne , International Thriller Writers website chair; managing editor, The Big Thrill While I was writing the Bishop , I was able to tour the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. So all of the information about the inside of the academy is as accurate as I was able to be without giving any inside information away. When I began the book, I wanted to have the entire story take place over the course of 52 hours. However, as I worked on it, I realized that this wouldn't allow me to build up the suspense I wanted to throughout the story. While writing the climax, I abandoned a rudimentary outline that I had started and wrote it organically, solidifying in my mind the realization that outlining was not for me and would end up wasting my time.I didn't know who the bishop would be until I was completing the final chapters of the book. Do you remember Flash Gordon?

This is the fifth Steven James/Bowers book I have read. I actually began with the last book so far in the series, and enoyed it so much I began with book one and read through to this book, which is number 4. In first three I got a bit frustrated because I did not understand the ending which always left me wondering...... it left unanswered questions.

The baddies keep cropping up in each book and withouot the history you would only got a part of the full picture. Think I have cracked the secret to the Jack Bowers series now though. I am old enough to remember going to the cinema on a Saturday morning and watching Flash Gordon. Each week he had an adventure but there was always a cliff hanger at the end, even though the 20 min show would stand on its own too. Thats how you have to treat this series - not actually as a series but as a serial. If you begin with book one and work your way through each one you will get so much more out of the book. Oh and dont expect a nice tidy ending! Sometimes as late as the last page a curve ball is thrown into the game, that leads into the next book.

I totally love the characters. Bowers is not like any of my other favorite cops - totally different to Jack Bowers or Mitch Rapp. He is quiet and studious and very very smart. His stepdaughter is an interesting character too and watching her grow throughout the series has been interesting to say the least. When you want to smack a character up the head you know the writing is good!! I intend to get the next book asap and spend a couple of totally obsessed days gobbling it down in one go. It is very violent and gory and the baddies are as bad as it gets. In other words REALLY GOOD STUFF. I am a 65 year old grandma and love it!! Give Steven James a go if you have never read him but take my advice and begin at the beginning. Grandma knows best!

Another Hit in series

The author keeps the suspense going in The Bishop. If you are a fan you know what I mean. If you are not you are in for a real treat.
New readers of author should start with The Pawn as the author introduces characters and builds on them in each book.
It's readable as a stand alone book also but some of the history of characters will be missing.
As always I read the book in mere hours because I started on a weekend and couldn't put it down!

Great Thriller

I am reading all the Bowers Files series and so far they have all been wonderful. They can be a little gruesome in some of the murder/torture details - but are filled with lots of suspense and keep your attention. Good plots and character builds.
