Any bust of Achilles would look well with that straight nose and strong chin, those full but starkly shaped lips. But no sculptor would dare carve that jawline. It was too square, too harsh, contours darkened with stubble. The maleness overpowered and was completely wrong for classical forms. Old gods and warriors wore thick, curled beards as profuse as a maiden’s locks. The young ones showed sloped cheeks that flirted with girlishness. This man was not girlish. No. Not that. She noted the bulge of biceps in his bent arm. The width of the forearm. She moved her eyes over his torso, the masses of muscle well-defined, dusted with more of that utterly unclassical hair, then traced the diagonal lines that ran down from his hip bones. She looked away, then back at the black curls at the base of that V of muscle. Here, then, was another deviation from the classical precedent. Canvases and statues had led her to expect something slightly more…cherubic from that part of the anatomy. Obviously, artists upheld a long tradition of minimizing male genitals for the sake of composition. Or decency. Or…Did this particular man exhibit some quirk of proportion? Her suppressed giggle emerged as a snort. It didn’t matter, of course, the man’s particular quirks, but that he had them at all. That he was particular . Not an abstraction, a mathematical proposition in stone. Those cold, white statues she studied had taught her a little about flesh, the tones and textures, the play of shadow and light, hard and soft. All those hours in the studios of Burlington House trying to work out how the sinews of the human form wrapped the armature of the bones… She almost clapped her hands. She felt flushed, wild. Here it was, the whole mystery of creation. No wonder women were denied access to life classes, banned from drawing semidraped and undraped figures. It wasn’t because the sight was corrupting. It was because the sight was illuminating. She leaned closer and caught a whiff of him, caustic enough to cut through the alley’s fug of mud and mildew. She wrinkled her nose. Spirits were emanating from his very pores. He wasn’t dead; he was dead drunk. Drank himself witless, and some of the local lads had played him for the fool he was. They could have left his drawers , for God’s love. She dropped down into a crouch, dust and straw puffing up around her. She knew it was madness to sit on her heels beside a naked stranger, a sot, full as a tick on forty-rod gin. Drunkards didn’t often emerge from sleep in the sweetest of moods. This one was strong. His body showed strength in every line. He might leap up without warning, swinging his fists in a rage. Her reflexes, though, were lightning quick. She could dodge a groggy blow. “Hullo.” She cleared her throat, sidled closer. “ Sir .” She only meant to rouse him. She wasn’t trying to memorize the balance of his features, the shape of his mouth, the sharp peaks of his upper lip. But somehow time was passing. She could hear the factory whistles sounding and her eyes were still wandering, sliding down to his chest and arms. She’d have to run from the omnibus to make her morning lesson. She rose, crept out onto the street. On the corner, a red-faced bobby was blowing his whistle. She’d bet her right eye the police would give the man a sniff, heave him up on the wagon, and dump him in a jail. The thought disturbed her. She turned away. There, a ragpicker, painfully young, all but hidden by the bag on his back. She gave him a smile. “What’s your biggest piece of sacking?” The boy sized her up as he dug out a filthy rectangle of cloth. Bigger than a fig leaf, but not by much. “A shilling,” he pronounced. She sighed. “Never mind.” She’d sacrifice her shawl. She slipped back into the alley and covered the man’s lower body with odd reluctance. It wasn’t the shawl she regretted. It was losing the sight of him. Back on the street, she found the boy waiting, more of his wares displayed for her on the pavement. “There’s a man sleeping in that alleyway,” she said. “I’ll give you a tanner to stand right there and keep an eye on him. If he starts to go clue, call a bobby.” The boy snatched the coin and grinned. He was missing both his front teeth. Probably he wouldn’t even wait for her to climb into the omnibus before he trundled off, taking the shawl with him. “Don’t go too near,” she added. “He eats little boys.” And he might, for all she knew. The man had certainly done nothing to deserve her sacrificing a shawl and spending sixpence. And , at this rate, missing her morning lesson. Nonetheless, she felt protective of him. She had to force herself to walk away. On her way home, she took the same shortcut and hardly knew if she was happy or sad that the man was gone. Later that evening, she found herself hunched over her sketchbook, staring at the blank page. When she shut her eyes, she could see him perfectly, see his contours and the dynamic tension latent in his resting muscles. She inched her fingers up the pencil, hesitated. The man was someone’s son. Brother. Husband. She had no right to reproduce his likeness at a whim. But the image was there, on the insides of her eyelids. The seeing was a king of feeling. Anthony Philby, the Duke of Weston, is undone. He is undone by the horrors of war he witnessed. He is undone by the unrealistic expectations heaped on his broad shoulders by his father. He is undone by the pressure to deny every vital part of himself.

But most of all, he is undone by L. Coover.

All Anthony needs to do is hang on by his fingernails. He has Humphreys to help him escape detection, and a secret stash that numbs the pain and anger and memories. But Lucy Coover sneaks under his defenses. She has no regard for his rank. She thinks him a wastrel.

Too boring and ridiculous to finish

I live regency romance but having just finished with Bringing down the Duke…. I guess the bar was a little too high? This was just period garbage with a heroine who seemed to be autistic and loose (by regency standards…. Victorian? I don’t remember). The main guy is an idiot but beautiful and also horny and I guess we are supposed to buy that there’s some sort of enemies to lovers crap going on?? This read like garbage fanfic and I can’t believe it has as many reviews as it does. If you want to read this book only done 1000 times better, read A rough of ones own or Bringing down the Duke (same author).

wonderful new voice for the genre

The Duke Undone by Joanna Lowell bears many similarities to some of my old Amanda Quick and Elizabeth Hoyt favorites. Quirky, artistic heroine from a lower/middle class background? Check. Grumpy and/or dissolute duke, rebelling against a severe, controlling father? Check. Villain plotting against the couple and a dangerous climax? Check. This book hits a lot of sweet spots for me, and Lowell's skillful prose is truly outstanding.

Lucy Coover is an artist from not-quite-but-almost the slums of London. Taking her regular shortcut through a seedy alley, she stumbles on the naked, unconscious body of Anthony, the Duke of Weston. She covers him up and pays a young rag-picker to watch over him, but not before committing his figure to memory. Female art students aren't allowed to study anatomy from the human body, so this is Lucy's big chance. She tells a few falsehoods in order to gain a wealthy woman's commission and paint a large-scale portrait of Anthony. Only problem is, the woman's husband recognizes him in the picture. Anthony HAS to find the artist and stop any and all scandals, or else he won't gain control of his inheritance.

Anyway, that's basically just the first few chapters. This book is plot-heavy, what I think they used to call "high concept." The romance is still central to the story, but there's a lost sister, a neighborhood eviction, alcoholism, betrayal, government corruption, and more. Lowell keeps things moving, however, and again, I'd just like to point out that, frankly, it's a joy to read such good writing, such lovely language. Lucy and Anthony are winning and sympathetic protagonists.

Steamy Victorian romance with lots of substance scrubbed in

Lowell packs quite a bit in this historical romance. There is the standard Victorian-era Women's Equality bit, but also statements about affordable housing, public sanitation, class disparity, starving artists, alcoholism, mental health discrimination, failing parental expectations, orphanage, plagiarism, and so on and so on.
For a historical romance, she manages to also bring in some very steamy scenes pretty early into the story. This isn't a slow burn type of romance, so exhibit caution if you are used to a more 'prim' and cosy Victorian romance.
Overall a fun read. Lucy is ah-mazing, of course. Why wouldn't she be. She's a total badass orphan painter from the wrong side of town with an awesome artistic mom that (unfortunately) died too young.

I loved this historical romance. The Duke Undone features Lucy Coover, a strong character and talented artist who is not of the aristocracy. It’s intelligently written with good supporting characters and a decent plot. Lucy is a painting student at the Royal Academy. Her experience there reveals one way in which women were “less than” historically; her precarious housing situation shows that political corruption has always been with us.; and factors surrounding the duke’s family demonstrate destructive greed as well as an example of how inconvenient women could be “managed” to suit those holding power. All of this social commentary is nicely wrapped up in a satisfying love story. What more can we ask?

Heavier Historical Romance

This book surprised me. From the premise, I was expecting something light-hearted, fluffy, maybe a tad farcical. But there are darker themes that drive the plot as much as the romance. Some of those things include the housing conditions of the poor and the legislation pertaining to them; the terrible institutionalizing of women for hysteria (aka serious mental health illnesses); and alcoholism, specifically as a self-destructive addiction. The role of consent in taking a likeness not freely (or consciously) given and then profiting from it is also touched on. These topics lend the novel a unique and valuable emotional undercurrent, but be aware of them and proceed accordingly.

I was drawn into both Lucy and Anthony’s characterizations. They feel very real and entirely relatable in a way that, again, I was not expecting. Their relationship is a slow burn, following the friends to lovers trope, and you really see that connection develop and strengthen as the novel progresses. I think the narrative loses focus at times, particularly in the handling of so many heavy topics. As a result, some of them feel inadequately developed (specifically Anthony's alcohol addiction).

But I highly recommend this read, especially if you’re a historical romance fan.

Full of period details but not skimpy on romance either

The Duke Undone matches up a young duke with a student of painting. Anthony is dealing with a lot of past trauma, including his mother's institutionalization and suicide, his own court martial, and a father who never approved of him while alive and is now posthumously controlling the dukedom through a codicil to the will. Lucy has her own issues to deal with: her education at the Royal Academy is hampered because the women students are not given the same access to classes as the men, and because she comes from a lower class than most of the other students. Under most circumstances, Lucy and Anthony would never meet... except for one early morning, Lucy comes across a completely unclothed man, dead drunk in the alley shortcut she uses to go to school. Since she has never been able to attend a "life class" where she could have drawn a nude model, she does what any ambitious artist would do: takes advantage of the situation to make several sketches and studies. Months later, Anthony discovers that he has been made the subject of a nude painting that he must do his best to suppress or risk losing his inheritance.

Full of period details on politics, society, world events, and art history, The Duke Undone is a lush romance. It is reminiscent of many Victorian novels, dealing with the characters' less-than-ideal behavior with compassion but without excuses. Lucy and Anthony's love story is hard-fought, and as the best romances do, there are moments when the reader can't imagine how they'll ever reach a happily ever after... but of course, they do!
