Description

"One of the most compelling characters in David Baldacci's thrillers is John Puller, a crackerjack investigator of military crimes...Twists and turns come fast and furious in the best Baldacci tradition. The Escape is much more than a thriller. It's a moving tale of two military brothers and their father, a retired Army general and fighting legend now suffering from dementia. Emotionally intense, The Escape is Baldacci's best to date."― Associated Press "[In his] clever third John Puller thriller...Baldacci handles the complex plot with consummate ease as the Pullers navigate nearly endless surprises."― Publisher's Weekly "A heck of an opening chapter, guaranteed to jettison readers into hours of addictive reading...Baldacci's last few books have been among the best in his long, busy career, and The Escape stands near the top for sheer adrenalin-fueled entertainment. It's alarmingly topical, too, taking us into the intelligence community and raising questions about privacy rights in the age of government surveillance and other buzz-worthy issues (no spoilers here). Indeed, the crime at the center of The Escape could have been pulled from recent newspaper headlines. Who says thrillers have to be the stuff of escapist fantasies?"― Richmond Times-Dispatch "Highly entertaining... The Escape is a terrific read."― CT News "A phenomenal read, as usual, from David Baldacci--don't miss it!"― BookLoons.com "David Baldacci has never been better than in ' The Escape .'"― Providence Journal DAVID BALDACCI is a global #1 bestselling author, and one of the world's favorite storytellers. His books are published in over forty-five languages and in more than eighty countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. His works have been adapted for both feature film and television. David Baldacci is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy efforts across America. Still a resident of his native Virginia, he invites you to visit him at DavidBaldacci.com and his foundation at WishYouWellFoundation.org.

Zero Stars

About 10 pages in I said "uh oh" and by page 94 I called UNCLE. This is some of the most sophomoric writing I have encountered in a long time. Baldacci's need to quantify almost EVERY exchange of dialog with a descriptor was highly annoying especially since there are numerous exclamation points thrown in for good measure. It was always "she said with a sneer", "he said angrily", "she said as she pouted", "he said remorsefully", etc, etc. If the writing is eloquent I can suss these nuances out for myself. Reading this book (or lack of) was like driving with someone learning to use a clutch for the first time. Ugh. I've only not finished a book a couple times in the last 10 years.

I'm tired of some authors pushing books out like puppy mills. I'd rather wait a year or more for some really juicy reading. Not the case here. Luckily I checked this out at the library so at least I didn't get the double loss of time and money. Don't waste either on this one.

John and Bobby Are Formidable Guys!

David Baldacci never disappoints. His heroes are many and this book is about John Puller, CWO, former soldier and now an intelligence expert. His family is another story. He has a famous retired general father with Alzheimer's who still thinks he's in charge and a brilliant brother who is serving a life term for being a traitor to his country. Or was he? And that's what this story is about. Robert Puller has escaped during a malfunction of the security at the prison. There is a dead guy in his bunk. The cells were automatically opened during this break, and the whole scenario is more than suspicious. Why did this happen? Where is Robert? Who is behind this?

John is ordered to investigate even though this is a conflict of interest. But who knows his brother more? Of course there has to be a woman involved and they become a team. But again, John wonders whether he can trust her. Or trust anyone involved in this case. And soon another murder occurs and it's one of the people in his immediate command.

The issues behind this latest Baldacci novel are scary ones. They involve the use and release of chemical substances and the potential deaths of millions of people at the hands of otherwise ordinary people in high positions seeking more power. David Baldacci creates suspense and fear as people like John Puller and his brother try to prevent massive disasters. Will they all survive? Will they succeed?

13 audio CDs for a 2 CD book

13 audio CDs for a 2 CD book. I started to can the whole book several times, as I did Mr. Baldacci's previous Puller series books, but toughed it out. No Mas! I'll stick with Lee Child, Daniel Silva, et al. Disappointed with Mr. B's last 4-5 books. He started out as one of, if not my favorite author, with Absolute Power. The dialogue in the last several books has just been mind numbing and horrific to listen to. Too much filler...really not interested in the painful descriptions of what the characters are eating and wearing...whether the lady has a black seam up her nylons, or the bitchy responses from Knox throughout the book. Adios!

Ties up a loose thread.

This story fleshes out part of the storyline that is part of the background of books one and two and does it well. Great writing and it keeps you in the story, not wanting to put it down.

Crackling suspense. Couldn't put it down.

This book is the 3rd of the John Puller series. It was gripping and I couldn't put it down. John's brother, Robert, has escaped. The reader knows that several years ago Robert was arrested and convicted of high treason and sentenced to life In the 1st two books we see John visiting Robert at the Disciplinary Barracks in Leavenworth. Robert has lashed out at a guard and was put in solitary. At the beginning of this book, Robert has disappeared and it is assumed that he has attempted to escape. John is ordered by his superiors to bring him in. Is this part of a deeper conspiracy and how has Robert been implicated? In the meantime a woman from a mysterious government agency has become involved.
(Spoiler alert!!) I loved this book. But I'd love to see another book centering on Robert Puller. What did he do and what happened at his trial? How did he react to his unjust conviction and his imprisonment? What made him snap when he assaulted the guard? What is it like in solitary? How did he plan his escape? Perhaps get him involved in another case and maybe another book.
