Features & Highlights

  • London, 1852. On the shocking discovery of a passenger's body on the Great Western Railway excursion train, Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant, Sergeant Victor Leeming, are dispatched to the scene. Faced with what initially appears to be a motiveless murder, Colbeck is intrigued by the murder weapon - a noose. When it emerges that the victim had worked as a public executioner, Colbeck realizes that this must be intrinsically linked to the killer's choice of weapon. However, the further he delves into the case, the more mysterious it becomes. When a second man is strangled by a noose on a train, Colbeck knows that he must act quickly; can he catch the murderer before more lives are lost? The memorable characters, first featured in The Railway Detective, again lead you down unexpected paths in their quest to solve the mystery of the noose murders.

A very enjoyable book in the Railway Detective series.

Excursion Train by Edward Marston – This is book two in the Railway Detective series by Marston. It is another very entertaining novel about the 19th-Century Scotland Yard inspector, Robert Colbeck and his assistant, Sergeant Victor Leeming. A man is murdered in a Great Western Railway carriage during a crowded excursion to a boxing match. Colbeck and Leeming quickly become embroiled in a complex case that involves multiple murders, multiple suspects, and an attempted murder of Inspector Colbeck. In addition to the unique railroad environment, this book is populated by interesting characters, and Marston provides an engaging story. I thought this book was even more enjoyable than the first volume in the series and I look forward to reading more of this series.

A look at the carnage from one lie.

A fascinating and sensitive look at the many victims left behind by murder. Those murdered all had marvelous reputations for good, in their own circles. But neighbors and those under them in society hated them with a passion, and there were cheers when news of their deaths became public. Yet there were other victims, those who were left behind to grieve. This second story in the Railway Detective series is definitely worth a read. There are just enough characters with lightness and eagerness and human foibles to make the balance with the hypocrisy of the murdered and murderers.

Fair enough mystery

I am finding that I like these mysteries, they are well constructed. However, this one contained a shameful amount of typographical errors. And one error of fact regarding railway operations.

Very enjoyable mystery

I was pleased to read a detective story set back in the mid-1800s England. Something different. A plot with a lot of false leads and a large number of characters that kept me guessing until the end.

Interesting and amusing characters.

I always am on the lookout of anachronisms, and I thought I had found one when bare knuckle prize fights were described as being held in a square ring of the modern type. I thought they were always held in a circle (hence "ring") on bare ground, but after Googling it, I found that sure enough, this type of ring was invented back in the 1830s. Who knew?

Other than that. life in that era seemed to be quite accurate.

I really enjoyed this book.
