Description

Praise for the Orcs series:"With grand scale world building, labyrinthine plotlines, extensive backstory and pedal-to-the-metal action, Nicholls captures adventure fantasy at its very best."― Publishers Weekly "Incorporating wall to wall action with undercurrents of dark humor, Bodyguard of Lightning is a gritty, fast-paced novel with a neat twist. The heroes are orcs - though you wouldn't want to meet any of them on a dark night!"― David Gemmell "Weirdly charming, fast-moving and freaky, Bodyguard of Lightning is the most fun you're ever likely to have with a warband of orcs. Remember, buy now or beg for mercy later ... "― Tad Williams "... A neat idea and Stan Nicholls pulls it off with great panache ... enough weird sex to keep the tabloids outraged for weeks. You'll never feel the same about Lord of the Rings."― Jon Courtenay Grimwood Markus Heitz was born in 1971 in Germany. He studied history, German language and literature, and won the German Fantasy Award in 2003 for his debut novel Shadows Over Ulldart . His Dwarves series is a bestseller in Europe. Markus Heitz lives in Zweibrücken.

Potential Wasted!!!

If you want to read a book that's over 500 pages, with an ending that's flat out garbage, this is the book for you. If you want to read a book that starts a joke, but doesn't give the punch line because the writer wants his "author's revenge" (he said this, I am not making it up! Who exactly is he getting his revenge on, his readers?), then this is the book for you. I read all of the Dwarves books and he should have stopped at the previous one. THE ENDING JUST DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE AT ALL. Without the ridiculous ending, the book would have garnered at least three stars, maybe four. After you invest all the time reading more than 500 pages, and then get subjected to an idiotic ending, it ruins the book.

a sad fate [no spoilers]

"The Fate of the Dwarves" apparently concludes the saga involving Tungdil Goldhand in an unexpected manner. Nearly 250 solar cycles have passed since the Black Abyss trapped Tungdil in the prior novel "[[ASIN:0316102830 The Revenge of the Dwarves]]". Where the series traditionally focused on Tungdil, it turns to Boïndil and Goda, Coïra the princess of Weyurn, Mallenia relative of Mallen from Idoslane, and an offspring of Rodario.

The interesting plot kept me entertained though I missed the earlier versions of the characters. Actions seemed strained, not in the older and wiser cautious manner either. Dark encounters with the main characters such as smashing fingers or slicing ears on prisoners did not sit well with me. Yet Goda is brilliant with some mirrors in the battle at the end. A couple poor editing incidents worth mentioning such as a missing pair of quotations and an encounter at the end of Chapter X Boïndil is left alone with Balyndar and her son however the dialogue suggests the son isn't present.

An enhanced map of the significant terrains and a more comprehensive appendix would have been useful.

I still highly recommend the series to any fan of the fantasy genre.

Thank you.

Not What I Was Expecting

I was excited to read the last book in this series, but was kinda disappointed by the ending, of which I don't want to say anything about because I would want other fantasy lovers to read for themselves. Some of the book was a little hard to follow, a little more so than past books. I would say that I still enjoy The Dwarves and The War of the Dwarves the best in this series. That's just my opinion though, judge for yourself.

Wasn't a strong finish

I really loved this series when it started out, but Fate of the Dwarves just didn't have the same feel. As encountered before, there was a long, winding start, but it was so packed that I felt I must have been in the middle of the book only to find that I had almost finished it. The book came to a close in so few pages that it seemed to be a sigh of relief for the author. I didn't feel the same connection with the characters in this book, although I know with one character that it was by design.

Dwarves

Loved the first three, this was no different, thought Heitz ended the series appropriately, would recommend all of them to anyone interested in fantasy fiction and Dwarves in particular. They are my favorite characters, full of good laughs.

I've Read them all and really enjoyed it!

Hello everyone, I've read all 4 of these books from Marcus Heitz. I've read some of the other Reviews about the storyline and the ending not being up to par. I wanted to give my own comment because I thought those reviews weren't legitimate. I enjoyed all 4 of the dwarves books and thought even though I didn't like the way it ended.. I couldn't think there would be a more "fitting" ending. This story line from book 1-4 was always gripping to me from the characters.. to the different parts of Girdlegard. I'm Glad I've read them and If you like the first 3.. Read the last one.. It's enjoyable and I was caught by it and couldn't put it down. So I give it 5 stars because it was a good end to the storyline. Thanks

Better than leaving it hanging on the third, but still a poor ending.

I am glad Markus Heitz decided to finish the series properly. I did not like how the third one ended so open endedly, and feel at least satisfaction it has a definite end. It might not be the way I'd like, and the author wrote this book in a completely new direction, but I still enjoyed it!

Don't let the people above change your mind about finishing this wonderful series. I will say I'm sad to see it end but it has been an incredible journey to see the characters progress and change after each new book.

The only criticism I have is the development of Tungdil in the book, if you read the sneak peek of the third you see he emerges from the Black Abyss, but its the after-effects that I did not like. No spoilers, but I believe the author takes too long to drag out his development in this book.

Overall I would give it a 4 out 5 just because it drags out a bit and the ending, but I am glad to see one of my favorite series have a proper end.
