A good way to get introduced into the franchise

The Founding is my first attempt to get into Warhammer 40k after being recommended to the franchise by many of my friends. I was fascinated with the premise of Warhammer 40k but couldn’t afford the game itself, so I was told to start with the founding and see what I think from there. At the moment I'm roughly a fourth of the way through the book and so far It's been a real page turner for me. If you’re new to the series as much as I am, if you like the Gears of War franchise, The Mass Effect series, World War I stories, and syfy in general, then you’ll love The Founding as its filled with that kind of stuff. The book can take a while to read (which really depends on how fast of a reader you are.) Other than that it’s a very good book and I highly recommend getting it.

Book damaged by seller

Book is great, but really disappointed by the seller. They jammed a too large book Into a too small box, which ripped the back cover and folded pages. I tried to email them and got no response. I would recommend the book, but I will not buy from Book Depository again.

Wonderful introduction to Warhammer 40K and the Imperial Guard

The first few novels of Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series are was got me sucked into Warhammer 40K when I was younger. They're all good novels. If you're looking for an introduction to the universe, want to read about a unique Guard regiment, or just like a good book, start here.

Not Abnetts best work

I was excited to get this book since Abnett is my favorite 40k author but the writing is predictable, boring, not very action packed which I usually don’t mind because Abnett is good at developing interesting characters but I find myself falling asleep reading this book. I’ve only finished the first book in the omnibus, about 250 pages so far. Not impressed at all, his other books were fantastic.

Great book so far!

I've always intended to delve into the 40k books, but hadn't until now. The 40k universe is huge and I didn't really know where to start so I looked up some suggestions and decided on the Gaunt's Ghosts series. So far so good. It's exactly what I was hoping for. Starting right up fighting the forces of chaos!

One of the best authors in the Warhammer family

I won't be going in on all of the individual stories, suffice to say that Dan Abnett did an amazing job creating these engaging and entertaining characters. This book could be stand-alone and still be rated 5 star, but I encourage you to read all of them. I highly recommend this book (and series of Gaunt's Ghosts).

A Great Intro to WH40K

This was a tight, fun series of books that introduced me to the WH40K universe through the more mortal lens of Gaunt's Ghosts, soldiers of the Imperial Guard. They dribble in some of the more fantastic elements of the WH40K universe (Eldar, Space Marines, Chaos Marines, etc.), but mostly it's about normal soldiers fighting normal (if Chaos-warped and alien) enemies. Abnett is a great writer and he doesn't let down here.

A great intro to 40k, as others have said;

My first introduction to 40k reading, but MAN was it a gripping ride!

I’ve played some games, put together & painted some minis, but actually reading the stories and immersing into the universe is rounding it all out in the best way.

This series gives a worthy glimpse into one of the Imperium of Man’s fighting arms: the vast Astra Militarum, and the workings of its balled fist - the Commissariat.

While commissars are presented to be fanatically zealous, callous instruments of the Emperor, Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt is a cut above them. Not only is he a ruthless, tactfully cunning, grizzled veteran against the forces of Chaos and the internal traitor alike - he is refreshingly human in his understanding.

He makes the ultimate choice in the founding of his Tanith First & Only regiment, and thus embarks upon a series of nearly suicidal skirmishes across the Sabbat Worlds crusade that will eventually become the stuff of myths and military record - even if Gaunt’s Ghosts are never mentioned.

This omnibus edition of the first 3 books takes us through a thrilling discovery of ancient secrets & mystery with the first book; a rounded introduction through many of the more prominent Ghosts, culminating in a mystical assault on a both unfamiliar yet nostalgic alien world; and finally the defense of a hive city in one of the most EPIC wars of attrition I’ve ever had to imagine.

I finished this book and immediately went about grabbing up as many other 40k books as I could find - and some are scarce.

I can see why Dan Abnett is one of the more veteran and widely celebrated authors of the Black Library after reading this - his catalogue is immense! If The Founding is your first foray into the grim darkness of the far future, then strap in for more, because finishing this book has only left me ready for the next!
