Beware

First of all, this book is very religious.. Putting that aside, it is an uplifting and inspirational story that encourages children to find what they are capable of and how they can help. The illustrations are what makes the story. It is beautiful poetry and is perfect for the younger audience. Considering the religious nature of the book, it won't be for everyone and that's okay.

A children’s book that explores career options in a delightful way!

This is an absolutely delightful children’s book that explores vocations and the dreams of what one can be when one grows older. The author uses beautiful illustrations and an excellent rhythm that will attract the young readers as well as those growing a little and beginning to ask the question, “What will I be when I grow up?” Children often hear that they have a hidden talent and this charming book delves into how God gives each of His children a talent that they can use for Him. The writing is simple but eloquent in its revelation of God’s truth for all children. What a beautiful gift this would be for any child in anyone’s life! I can ‘t wait for the book to be released so that I can get a copy for my young grandchildren!

I can always give God's love....

What I loved:

"Exactly the person God made me to be!" part of the opening line.
Pictures- warm, delightful, draw a reader in with the colors, and experiences.
Rhyming Words
Concept of the book- I can always give God's love
length- not too short, not too long

What bothered me:

Missed potential...
this could be so Gospel Centered, sharing how God's love is so great, so high, so vast, sharing how God gives His love through His Son Jesus on the cross, but it is very general and generic...
No scripture referenced, no scripture notes or suggested verses
"As He lives in my heart, every moment, every day" (literary license? so it's okay but a note to parents at the end of the book about this confusing expression when referred to ask Jesus in your heart)
How I might use it:

As a home read aloud:
with references to God's love from the Word of God
I'd ask my kids what do know about God's love?
Ephesians 3:18- vast, wide, high.... So big we can't measure it
1 John 4:7,8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God....
John 13:33-34
I Peter 4:8
1 John 3:16
Hymn- The Love of God
In a Sunday School or Kidmin setting
when talking about gifts
When presenting the gospel- I'd share we can share God's gift of love because Jesus was the picture of God's love, in His death, resurrection, and return to Heaven- and Jesus makes the way for us to draw close to God, and live like He would.
with Colossians 3 passage- what does the well dressed believer need to put on.... how do we put it on...
by asking kids what illustration would you change in this book, to make God's love be better defined. (adding Jesus image, adding scripture...)
With parents
as an example of being culturally acceptable- God could be any God- and as a book that is christian, but misses the mark- it's okay, maybe even good, but it's missing the mark at being the best book for a gospel centered life.
asking parents, what do you think of this book? would it be in your home? how would you use it? is it missing an aspect that you as the spiritual fathers of your kids needs to add in?

Meh.

The Gift That I Can Give was written by  Kathie Lee Gifford and illustrated by Julia Seal. The target audience is preschoolers. This book was published by Thomas Nelson’s children division, a registered trademark of Harper Collins Christian Publishing, Inc.

This comes in both a hardcover picture book with a dust jacket, and a board book with a padded cover. I'm reviewing the hardcover picture book (the dust jacket has glitter on the butterflies).

Here are a few pages worth of quotes...

"When I was small,
Right from the start,
God poured out a gift
deep down in my heart.

What is this gift
To use as I grow?
When will I see?
How will I know?

God, will You show me
This gift that I can give
As I grow and love
And I learn how to live?"

So after reading those few pages, I thought maybe this book would be on loving your neighbor, helping, giving, etc... Annnd as soon as I turned the page it went into activities like dancing, singing, and passing the ball during sports... A little unexpected, but not surprising. Then it talks about taking care of stray animals, cheering on friends, visiting sick children, and hugging your family.

Being a good steward by taking care of God's creation, and visiting those who are sick are great things to talk to children about, but everything else was kinda meh. It wasn't what I expected after that intro. My nephew was unimpressed with this book, and I don't think it's worth the price, which is why I'm glad I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Haha.

Color

I read an advanced PDF copy from the publisher and loved it! It was just so sweet. It was easy to read the book in my head in the voice of the lovable Kathie Lee! The illustrations were fun and colorful and I liked how some of the words on each page jumped out because they were done in color.

Adorable with a great message and easy to follow for new readers!

This was an adorable story! The meaning behind it was something every kid (and adult) need in their life every now and then!

My kids loved it, as well! Perfect bedtime story!

Plus, my five year old is learning to read and the book was formatted nicely for him to follow along with me and pick up his sight words!
