Worth the read

Its worth the read but I thought the ending could have been better and faster paced. I'm glad I got it but I won't be telling anyone that they need to read it.

Amazing conclusion to The Call duology

The Invasion is the conclusion of The Call duology which is a young adult fantasy horror dystopian about a group of teens stuck in Ireland while the walls between the Gray Land (the world of the Sídhe or fairy) and ours fall. During The Call we saw Anto (a non-violent vegetarian boy) and Nessa (a girl dismissed due to her disability from
polio) actually survive their “calls” to the Gray Land only to come back forever altered.

In The Invasion the authorities are suspicious of Nessa’s survival as they try to root out traitors that made deals with the Sídhe. She is separated from Anto and forced to fight for her innocence on both sides of the wall. But Anto faces heartbreaking losses of his own while his group is confronted with Sídhe who are positioning themselves for the final takedown of what they call “the Many Colored Land”.

The Invasion is equally dark to The Call with scenes of violence and body horror. But if a dark dystopian fairy tale could be described as “realistic” I definitely found this one to be. You can’t help but cheer for Anto and Nessa as they fight for their love, freedom and the land they love. I found the ending to be an amazing conclusion to the entire story.

Enjoyable sequel, expanding the threat of the Call

The Call finished on a high note—Nessa and Anto had survived! But the Invasion immediately throws their dreams into nightmares, as Sidhe begin to invade their world—an Ireland isolated by a curious barrier somewhere at sea. Traitors are sent out in boats and never return. Warriors are sent out to destroy all things not of this earth. And plans are made, on both sides of the war.

Legends, well-known and little-known, play their part in The Invasion just as they did in The Call. Fate throws characters apart and together, creating and mending betrayals. And the path to saving the world seems ever more fraught as the story progresses.

I liked The Call for its very personal, scary horrors and the mystery of where it might take me. In The Invasion, the horror is written much larger, the threat is clear, and the separate paths of the battle seem to draw ever apart. But the author pulls it all together again, bringing personal needs and loyalties to the fore, and drawing it all to a satisfying conclusion. I hope there might be a third book in this series, though it’s as complete after two books as it surely was after one. I certainly enjoyed it.

Disclosure: My husband got the Call for Christmas and we loved it. I recommend readers start there, then move on to this.

The Most Pure Form of Horror I've Ever Read

If you're into horror, you'll like this. I only got into this duology because I like mythology and wasn't familiar with Irish mythology. (There's not a lot of Irish mythology.) Also, it didn't occur to me that Scholastic published anything this dark. I think it shouldn't be marketed to its target teen audience. But if an adult is into horror, they may like this. Too rich for my blood. I only finished the two books because once I get into horror, it's not enough for me to stop reading; I really need resolution. This book technically resolves, but not in a satisfying enough way for me. Theres a lot of torture of innocent people and death, etc. You've been warned!

Love this book

Love both of the books in "The Call" series. I initially listened to this on audiobook but loved it so much, I wanted hardback copies for my library!

Ok, for a Sequel

I wanted to love this book just as I loved "The Call" but unfortunately, for me, it just did not hit the mark. It felt as though the story was rushed to an end and I found it to lack the vivid descriptions and character development that "The Call" contained. It was an easy read that my middle schooler could have breezed through and yet I found it hard to continue to pick the book up. I read "The Call" in about 3 days but this one took almost 4 weeks due to a lack of interest on my part.
