King or Thief?

I enjoyed this book in the series immensely! It gives us an up-close, day-to-day view of happenings in the court and castle of Attolia. We watch Eumenides, who is now the unwelcome King, through his daily routines and challenges. As always with Eumenides, there is a good deal more going on than is apparent! This book gives us an even better understanding of the main characters than we were already getting in the previous book, The Queen of Attolia. Wonderful!

One of my favorite series of all time

The prior book In the series THE QUEEN OF ATTOLIA blew my mind and then THE KING OF ATTOLIA went and took it to the next level. Incredible. This is the gold standard in plot writing. And character writing for that matter!

Very highly recommended, but start at the beginning of the series with "The Thief."

This is the third book in the Queen's Thief fantasy series. If you have not read this series, if you like masterfully-told stories, if your taste in fantasy encompasses stories where the fantastical surfaces rarely but crucially, if you have a taste for heroic characters in difficult circumstances, if you like it when those characters are shown to care for each other, then skip the reviews and their attendant spoilers, and go read the books. Start at the beginning with "The Thief." Enjoy.

what a great character

The best thing about great literature is great characters that you remember for all time. Eugenities is just such a character, as he plays the King of Attolia. Like the other books in this series, it starts as a slow burn and explodes into a surprising conflagration near the end. I have read the books in order and will go on to the next one.

MY FAVORITE BOOK EVER

Wish I could write as well this author, then my review would persuade you to read this series ( which starts with "The Thief"). I rarely read books twice. When I pick up a book again-usually years later-I just read my favorite parts again. But THIS...THIS BOOK...I don't know. I can't get away from it. I've read it 3 times now in the last month. I've read the ending about 12 times. It's crazy to me how she can use one sentence or phrase so perfectly it just make the whole earth stop rotating. For instance, there is a place in this book where one of the main characters says ONE word: "wildly"...and after I read that part, I want to back up a page or two so I can read through to that part again. It is so much perfection.

The first chapter is told from a soldier's perspective

One of the guard members hit the king in the face. We do not get to see that actual moment. We only see the guard deeply regretting his actions and wondering about the repercussions on his family. He fully expects to die.

The queen set a task for the new king. He told her that he wanted to reduce her personal guard by half. She said that he could if he could convince the captain to agree. It is a convoluted path to get that agreement, but it is wonderful.
