An Action Packed Thriller

Matthew Betley, author of the Logan West series, introduces Zack Chambers in The Neighborhood. In an upscale gated community the residents have always felt safe. A gate, however, is no deterrent to modern technology and a group of former military men who are determined to retrieve a laptop. With communications jammed and a number of men disguised as policemen, they planned to evacuate the residents so they would be free to search the homes. Citing a nearby train wreck with toxic fumes, it is going as planned until one of the residents makes a threatening gesture and is shot. The plan never anticipated the presence of Zack Chambers, a highly trained veteran and a former member of the CIA. The sound of gunshots sends him into the nearby woods, where he can observe and take actions to protect the residents.

Sam is Zack’s seventeen year old neighbor and the babysitter for his children. Zack’s wife and children are away for the weekend, as are Sam’s parents. She is resourceful and observant. Rather than evacuate, she stayed hidden in her house. Armed with her father’s shotgun she is not afraid to defend herself, but Zack’s mission for Sam is to get out of the development and notify the authorities. What she returns with is Zack’s brother Nick, a former Navy Seal and current US marshal. If one Chambers brother can cause havoc, two brothers make a formidable pair.

Betley alternates the current crisis with scenes from Zack’s past. It was an assignment in Malta that finally ended his career with the CIA. An attack on a Russian contractor and his partner would have killed innocent civilians. Zack went against orders to capture them without civilian casualties. His superior, Griffin Huntsmen, was a sociopath who would have killed anyone to achieve his goal. Now Griffin is in charge of the assault on the neighborhood. Zack knows that he will kill anyone who stands in his way. In one single night it is a life or death struggle that will have you quickly turning pages as Betley raises tensions to a level that will leave you breathless and hoping to see Zack return in the future. I would like to thank NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for providing this book for my review.

Wall to wall action

Matthew Betley's Logan West thrillers contain globe-trotting, high-octane action from start to finish. In his new standalone thriller, The Neighborhood, the action is all contained in one spot, save for some flashback sequences.
Hidden Refuge is a little secluded subdivision in Virginia. The neighborhood happens to harbor a piece of stolen equipment that some very important people would like returned and they've hired some very bad men to make that happen. What they didn't know was that Hidden Refuge is also the home of former CIA agent Zach Chambers. Zach left the CIA behind, but what he didn't leave behind were the deadly skills he learned in their employ. Skills that are quickly coming back to him once he sees a group of mercenaries threatening his neighbors.

It's not going to be a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

One of Betley's greatest skills is quickly sketching solid characters that are easy to either fear or empathize with. Zach Chambers is a great character as is his babysitter/neighbor, Samantha Hawkins. Griffin Huntsmen as the leader of the group tasked with retrieving the equipment is a great foil for Chambers and is both feared and respected for his prowess.

It doesn't take long for the action to start hopping, and once it does, you are in for a roller coaster ride all the way to the finish. The plot is aided by a number of coincidences, but the action keeps coming fast and furious. Flashbacks fill in Chambers and Griffin's shared history which lends impact to the showdown that you know is coming between these two. While I missed some of the globe-spanning scope of the Logan West thrillers, you can always count me in for intense battles and a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Thriller fans will find a lot to like here!

Book Review – The Neighborhood – Matthew Betley
National bestselling author Chris Hauty called author Matthew Betley’s “The Neighborhood,” “A Die-Hard movie in a gated community.” And he was right! I can easily picture The Neighborhood as a blockbuster action thriller film in the very near future. Betley crafted this standalone from his Logan West series with the same vigor and vitality that he is known for in his Logan West series. Action-packed, intense, and full of twist and turns, readers are treated to Betley’s great writing, strong character development, and exhilarating plot and storyline. Protagonist Zack Chambers, a former CIA elite operator, warrants his own series after this narrative. Working as a software developer now and living in an affluent gated subdivision, Chambers senses something wrong when the local police show up unexpectedly and starts evacuating the entire upscale neighborhood citing a nearby train wreck with toxic fumes. However, there was no chemical spill, nor were the police real police officers. Chaos ensues with the shooting of a resident and Chambers with some help, ultimately takes on a band of violent mercenaries who were there to retrieve a laptop hidden in one of the posh homes that contained some super important information that could change the world! Exhilarating. Entertaining. Humorous. Invigorating. The Neighborhood is one electrifying thriller! I highly recommend it. Two thumbs up Matthew Betley! Great read!
