Practical and theoretical neurogenesis

Brant Cortright: The Neurogenesis Diet and Lifestyle Book; Upgrade your Brain, Upgrade your Life

Brant Cortright, Ph.D., has been studying and teaching psychology, particularly the intrapersonal, especially as taught by Sri Aurobindo, for the past several decades. He has now focused on diet among others aspects of the holistic approach that can be, apparently, effected on an every-day basis.

In order to understand what he calls a "nuerogeneic lifestyle" he first explains contemporary western understanding of brain anatomy and physiology, and then how recent research suggest that diet and other bodily, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual aspects can importantly effect the ability of the brain to renew and upgrade itself. This then effects higher cognitive functioning in general, memory, emotional vitality, reduced anxiety, and fuller immunity.

He emphasizes neural plasticity, variation in in people's rate of producing new brain cells, the relation of regeneration of brain cells to other environmental and diet life styles, and the ability of individuals, at almost any age, to stimulate neurogenesis.
Although these concepts might sound, and are, challengingly academic, they are finally attached to specific foods, their amounts, timing, and combinations. The book was meant to be, and is, written in a popular style.

Beyond the diet aspects, Brant reviews research dealing with the body, mental stimulation, affective pleasures and suffering, and Islamic, Christian, and Vedantic meditational and prayer practices, and their potential effects on neurogenesis.

This book, including a variety of objective research, and fully practical suggestions, can be expected to effect mindfulness, and so lead to a longer and more cognitively, emotionally, and spiritually vital life. I recommend it as a useful approach to understanding and apparently effecting neurogenesis, regeneration of brain cells, and life-long vitality.
