Description

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—At 15, beautiful dark-eyed, dark-skinned Nimh is a goddess and magician, beloved by her people and desperate to save them from the ever-growing mist storms, which render humans insane when they don't outright kill them. Following a prophecy, she leads an expedition to find the Last Star. What she finds is North, and the smoking ruins of his glider. North is from the cloudlands where his brown skin marks him as one of the first families, and where Nimh's ancestors fled from the mists a thousand years ago. North is astounded, he has no idea that people still live in the Below, while Nimh is amazed to learn that the cloudlands exist. North's world has science, technology, and transportation in stark contrast to the Below, where there is only the most basic of machines. However, they do have magic, and Nimh believes that North is the Last Star prophesied to help her save the people of Below. But when the two discover the original prophecy scroll, everything Nimh has ever believed in changes beyond comprehension. This is a complex, intricately woven tale, placed in an intriguing and unique world. I should have borrowed this from the library

This book was a hard read. There was a lot of world building and scene setting which was nice but it got to be too much after awhile. There is a ton of stuff that happens in such a short period of time and the relationship between the two main characters is awkward at best. Nimh is a pretty interesting character and I enjoyed her for the most part, but she felt a little too naive for the role she was in. She was so strict to follow rules for herself but also defiant enough to sneak away from the temple but was not in charge of her priests and acolytes? Didn't made a lot of sense. I didn't care for North as a character. It felt like he contributed nothing to the storyline. Also, I felt like these authors were trying to check things off of a list with unnecessary drama or information. Like, the whole throuple comment in the beginning (which is fine, I guess) but it literally had NO BEARING on the story what so ever. It felt more like a "let's throw this in to be edgy". I will not continue with this story. I really wish I wouldn't have bought this.

Very disappointing

Very disappointing. I’m a big fan of these authors but I couldn’t finish this book. The premise is great and it starts promising. But it quickly becomes repetitive. How many times do we have to read about Nimh’s beauty or North’s good looks? The 1st 10 times were sufficient. The underlying story is never fleshed out but remains superficial. Do not recommend.

Wonderful Sci-Fi and Fantasy Mashup

The Other Side of the Sky is a brilliant mashup of both Sci-Fi and Fantasy. In this book, you follow two POVs: Nimh's whose is filled with magic, and North's whose is filled with science and technology. Now I am not generally a huge fan of multiple POVs as it can be either confusing, difficult to follow, or feel unnecessary, but I think the authors did a wonderful job of balancing the two. It never felt like they overlapped and I think the use of the two POVs is honestly part of what made this book amazing. Instead of only getting to see the magic or science POV, we get to see both sides as well as the two characters slowly accepting and understanding the other's worldly views.

Overall, this is was a really enjoyable read! I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels so to have one that combined both into one was pretty exciting. This book is pack full of action, excitement and of course romance! There is definitely a star-crossed lovers/forbidden romance feel to this book that I just couldn't get enough of, so if you're into that you will definitely want to pick this book up. I definitely recommend this book and am itching for the next one now, and yes it does end on a cliffhanger :)

Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!

Amazing storytelling! Amazing characters! Amazing world building! Just amazing,

I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy from Netgalley and the Publisher for an honest review.

The Other Side of the Sky is a captivating, fast paced, action packed story that drew me in from the very first page. Team Kaufman and Spooner have yet again managed to build a unique world with relatable and very likable characters. I eagerly anticipate the next installment.

Prince North is from a series of islands suspended in the sky with the use of a technology that none of his people understands anymore. As with most royalty, North fights the constraints his mothers have imposed on him. With the help of his friends, North sneaks out and participates in races with a glider he built from scratch. During one of his flights, North's glider malfunctions, sending him over the edge of his world and crashing to the planet below.

Nimhara is a living goddess residing in a temple on the planet below North's islands in the sky. Her people appear to be much more primitive, using magic, telling prophesies, and worshiping divinity. Nimhara believes that someday a star will fall from the sky bringing forth the end of her current society so that they may all be reborn into a better world. Could North be that star?

A favorite of the year!

This was one of my most anticipated releases for 2020, and after a bit of a struggle actually getting the book, I devoured it! And let me just say, it did not disappoint!

The premise of a fantasy-meets-sci-fi world where neither knows the other exists was what drew me in in the first place, and it was executed so well! The setting was absolutely gorgeous and I loved watching these characters with ENTIRELY different backgrounds and knowledge try to work together!

I adored these characters!! Nimh was so strong and her struggles felt infinitely real, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way! And North!! Ah I loved him so much! His personality was so endearing and I loved how he supported Nimh through everything!

The writing was phenomenal!! This author duo is so talented!! I was so sad when this boom ended not only because of the cliffhanger (🤯) but also because I was devastated to have to leave this world and this story and this incredible writing!

Ah this book has all of my favorite things! A beautiful world, fascinating and lovable characters, political intrigue, and a wonderful romance! The Other Side of the Sky gets a 5/5 stars from me and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique fantasy/sci-fi story!!

Fireworks that fizzle rather than crack- they can do better

I absolutely love the books these authors have created- These Broken Stars series is a terrific read and definitely underrated. I was super excited when I received this book as a Christmas gift for many, many reasons:
1. The cover is freaking gorgeous!!!
2.Blend of fantasy with science fiction (genius!)
3.New, unique concept!

Points of Interest:
1. I believe Nim was a well-executed character- her character is realistic, her emotions are raw and I can relate to many things she found difficult or challenging emotionally and mentally; she was fierce and she embodied everything great about the feminist movement; although I did connect with her, it was at a very base level. North was just a whimp. Nothing distinguishing about him and all his characteristics again felt half baked and not very strong. He was nice?
2. The contrasting world were fantastic- the land in the skies with superior technology and the more tribal ,magical lands below. There was some world building and I like that we got to the plot, but somehow the world seemed so interesting that I wish there was more descriptions of the scenery, creatures, folklore, etc.
3. Maybe that is just me, but there was a lot that happened and it felt like so much happened. Lots of action and I think it needed more buildup. Again, that could just be me. The plot was extremely interesting, just a lot happened in such little time. It was hard to wrap your head around one revelation and BOOM! a new thing.
4.The romance. There were interesting points, but there were also pitfalls. I have recently seen in Cassandra Clare's books this whole polyamorous relationship. I get that they exist, but I do not believe the should belong in books aimed for teenagers like myself. I get many adult read YA and like great, enjoy it, but I do not forsee many parents appreciating this scope of inclusion. There are queer relationships, fine, but the whole threesome is just perverse. Some may read this and disagree (and maybe even vehemently hate me), but I hope better for our society. These are not model relationships. For this "inclusion" I took a star. Anyway, the romance was cute and all, but yes it was insta-love. I figured that in 3 days all of that concern should not have happened since that usually takes most people weeks or months. The dialogue was okay as well... It just left a lot to be desired.
5. Everyone is talking about the end. It was an end. I did enjoy the end as it was a twist, but I strongly think it was rushed and the end should have come 100 pages earlier. It just dragged on and on. I wanted to end at page 300. A. Not a good sign when you are made to feel that way and B. Why make a book larger than it needs to be? To prove something? YA fiction is so repetitive we will just throw EVERYTHING at you. It just made things confusing. Forgot to mention that-- book started out confusing on the world and the whole back and forth with the prophecy was just as well.
6.Magic felt underdeveloped and underwhelming. Nothing spectacular. The mist idea was creepy however. That was scary. Still not fleshed out enough.

After contemplation, I thought that this book was solid. My title even was positive. This review has made me realize more. I wish it lived up to their previous series. It does not... I loved the bindle cat (super cute, best personality), but I felt like there was magic (something special? a spark?) missing. I did not stay up to read this. It took me a week (maybe 2) of steady grind and putting it up and down throughout the day. Not very satisfying and continually reminding me of why I do not like YA. This one would be a skip.

Such an amazing book with incredible characters.

Oh. This feeling is what I want every book that I read to give me. It is the feeling of perfection. The feeling of such happiness. This book was everything to me. Every part of it was perfect. I loved it beyond words. Okay, that cliffhanger ending killed me, but gosh, how good it all was. Sigh. Five stars for this most precious book.

I knew I had to read this book when it was first announced. I very much love both authors and their books, together and not. Their writing is so good. Was even more perfect in this. It looked fully gorgeous. And sounded so very good. And I am so happy that I read this precious thing. Because it meant the very most to me.

Also, how gorgeous is that cover? I do not think I have ever seen prettier people on book covers. Nimh and North are so stunning. And I simply can't wait to own this book for myself when it comes out in just a few short weeks. I was not really prepared for how epic and amazing this book would be. I was not at all prepared for how much I would love both characters and how stunning the romance would be. Without them ever touching each other. Oh. This story was the best. And the worst at times too. I am not sure I can survive waiting for book two after that rude ending. I must know what happens next. Okay, it ended pretty amazingly. But so very evil. Book two will be incredible and I cannot wait for it. This world created was so very well written and so exciting.

There is so much I wish to share about this book. And even more I will forget about, which is always the case with books that I love. But where do I even begin with this book. I shall not write too much about it, as I do not want to spoil anything. This book tells the story of Nimh and North. He is a prince living on a floating island in the sky. His people have been there for so long, never looking down at the world below. Nimh lives on the ground, as the one living divine goddess among her people. They are so very different.

And reading about them meeting each other was the very best. Eee. But first, getting to know them both. They were so interesting and exciting to read about. North lived in the sky, where his people had all kinds of technology available. Almost like our world. Nimh lived on the ground, with no technology. With magic instead. Which was way better, in my opinion, haha. This book starts with learning a bit about them both. And then North falls from the sky in his self-made glider. Someone had sabotaged him; he couldn't stop.

They end up meeting because Nimh travelled at that time to look for a miracle to save her people. And she ended up finding North. And oh, how I loved these two the most. They were with each other for pretty much the whole book. And it was so good. No stupid drama, no hurt, no pain. Okay, a little hurt, but it was so good. I so loved how they began having feelings for each other. And how this was impossible between them. It was beyond good. I shipped them more than anything. And their growing friendship was the best.

Nimh has been the living goddess for her people since she was five years old. When the divinity chose her as its vessel. Her world have always had one divine person. A person who could help everyone. The last one was a healer, able to heal anything. And now there is Nimh. She cannot do a single thing. Which is not usual. And her people are losing faith in her. Which was the worst to read about. Nimh was lonely. Shut away. Being a goddess meant she could never touch anyone. Ever. Or she would lose her divinity.

And then North was there. And all she wants is to touch him. He is different to her, as he is the only one she has met that does not know her. And he falls for her quickly too. And just. Sigh. I wanted these two together so badly. Yet they never touch in this book. Not once. It was still the most perfect thing. And I so hope there will be touching in book two. And lots of it, haha. Anyway. I have not mentioned the plot much. And I will not. Nimh is searching for a miracle. North is searching for a way home. At least, he was at first.

There was so much that I loved about this book. I'm not mentioning all of it. But gosh. There was magic. And it was so awesome. There were other great characters too that I loved. This book has a special cat through this whole story. The bindle cat. And oh my gosh, this was the most adorable thing. I have a cat myself and always love reading about them. Sigh. This cat was most adorable and cute. And helped them a few times too. He was way too precious. And still alive, ha. I loved this book with the whole of my heart.

One of the things that I loved very much about this story was how diverse it was. The main characters are not white. And I loved that. They were also not all straight, and I loved that too. There are mentions of the main boy having planned on making a three with his two best friends, boy and girl. Which wasn't possible because of him being royal. But they all wanted it. And I loved how this was included in this book, how it was normal in this world. To me, at least, all was written well and this book included so much. All so good.

The Other Side of the Sky was everything I want in a book and so much more. It took me completely by surprise. I knew I would love it, but I did not know that I would love it this much. I did not know how much the story would mean to me. How exciting I would find everything to be. Just, gosh. This book was every bit of perfect to me. And I so cannot wait to know what happens next. Biggest thank you to the publisher, HarperTeen, for the auto-approval on Edelweiss. So glad that I read this precious book. You need it too.

What is fantasy? What is science fiction?

I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I quite enjoyed the blend of fantasy with science fiction. I particularly enjoyed the ongoing discussions of what is magic vs what is science. So many YA books walk that very weird line of science fiction and fantasy. So what exactly makes it one or the other? [There’s no real answer but the closest we came is: science, you can explain; magic, you can’t.]

The story is just a delightful blend of so many things I enjoy in books: a chosen one forced into a situation not of their choosing; a world of technology vs a different and perhaps more primitive world; fate, destiny, & prophecy; an isolated person (royal figure or religious figure) finally meeting someone who truly knows and understands their struggle. The story really explores those ideas in a wonderful way.

Amie and Meagan sure know how to write a story. I quickly grew to love & care for North and Nimh. I understood their struggles and cheered for them even though that meant some opposition to the other party. There’s no way for them both to win.

The story is perfectly plotted. Each side of the story kept moving along at a great pace. I didn’t grow bored or annoyed at having to switch perspectives. The revelations towards the end were a great way to elevate the stakes in a way I hadn’t seen coming.

Even though the story was pitched as a forbidden romance, I didn’t find the romance to be overbearing as a non-romance fan. Sure, there’s some tension between our leads but nothing over the top or ridiculous. It’s realistic & relatable. North & Nimh found someone who truly understands their struggle. Who wouldn’t want to hold on to that?

The bottom line? Delightful read. Don’t let the romance keep you away if it’s not your thing.

A Well Built Story Of Magic and Tech

Wonderfully woven story from these two authors. Fantastic characters and two well developed different worlds. Two people from different worlds one tech world one magic world and the two struggle with believing in each other. Stuff happens. evil comes, battles happen, lives lost, goddesses lost it's all left on a cliffhanger. This beek spent a lot of time in the magic world I think the next might be more tech world based. I'm really looking forward to continuing with this series
