Features & Highlights

  • Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, THE ROOKIE is a story that combines the intense gridiron action of "Any Given Sunday" with the space opera style of "Star Wars" and the criminal underworld of "The Godfather." Aliens and humans alike play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that literally want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed and rival players are assassinated. Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate, and kill, those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he'll wind up just another stat in the column marked "killed on the field."

Like Sports, Sci-fi, Action, Craziness and Great Writing?

Ok, let me just say this out right...I am NOT a football fan! I don't really care for it, but if football were like it is in this series I would watch the crap out of it! I have been a Sigler fan for a long time and the GFL (galactic football league) were the last books of his I read because I figured its about football so I would maybe not like it. Yeah, I was WAY wrong! These books turned out to be my favorite series EVER! I've read the dark tower and a whole bunch of other series over the years but this one just blew them away. It has a main character you care so much about and you want to see succeed so much! The writing is superb and the action and drama both on and off the field is written with such incredible accuracy you would swear your standing right next to the main character! Just do yourself a favor and buy this book (and the others cause to be honest your going to!!) I actually have all the books in hard copy and Kindle! Love them that much! I am holding my breath for book 5 in the series! Start now! You will thank me!

Awesome, not much else to say other than that

Scott Sigler's master stroke The Rookie is the first in a series of Galactic Football League books. The story follows 19y/o hotshot rookie quarterback Quentin Barnes. Barnes, who is number 1 in the all human Purist Nation Football League, has just been promoted to the tier 2 Galactic Football League Ionath Krakens. Upon his arrival in the big leagues, Quentin has to up his game to compete against alien species that also play in the league. He also must overcome his racism/xenophobia due to his religion and upbringing, deal with competition from 1st string veteran Krakens Quarterback Donald Pine, become the leader that his team so needs and bring the Krakens to the championship and into Tier 1 GFL. This book has it all, teams run by gangsters and smugglers, on field deaths, wide receivers who can leap 20 feet in the air, 500 lb defensive/offensive linemen, coming of age tales and tales of loyalty. This is a great beginning to a phenomenal series that I can't wait to get back to. I recommend this to sci/fi fans, sport fans and reading fans in general.

Football in Space

I read this book because I enjoyed the author's other books, the very visceral 'Infected' and 'Contagious'. This one uses gore and violence at an appropriate level for a book about galactic football where a creature's leg can get ripped off.

Personally, I don't particularly enjoy football, but I still liked this book. The protagonist Quentin is an enjoyable character, who develops throughout the book seemingly because he didn't care too much about his previous racist indoctrinations. Although the team record in their football games is predictable after a couple have been played, it's kind of a minor point. I assumed from nearly the beginning that Quentin's team, the Ionath Krakens, would advance, it wasn't that hard to divine. It's not about that. That's merely the setting, not the plot. Quentin learns to get along with his alien teammates, and also the alternately skinned humans (blue or bleached-white) to form a tightly knit team.

All in all, a solid, enjoyable science fiction read with the main character developing from a starting point that I wouldn't expect of many space travelers.

Football IN SPAAAACCEEE!!!

If you like football, gansters, aliens, or all of the above, this book is obviously for you!
Scott Sigler delivers a hit once again with The Rookie, an action-packed novel that is full of not only face-smashing football goodness, but also a real lesson in dealing with issues of racism and religious intolerance. Rookie QB Quentin Barnes has a lot in store for him in this first installment of the GFL series.

Highly entertaining even for non-football fans

I don't really enjoy football, but this book is about a lot more - the characters are well-written and the world feels real. I had a lot of fun following Quentin (the eponymous rookie) around, meeting alien races and seeing new worlds. And you know, I actually ended up enjoying the football too - the reader is in the game from behind the main character's eyes, and it is thrilling to be a quarterback in the Galactic Football League.

It's a fun book - I highly recommend it and the others in the series.

Excellent series

I loved all four books. The main character shows what it means to come from nothing to having everything but still having a lot to learn in the mean time. The series is very detailed in the games played adding color and excitement. I highly recommend the series.

Great Book

The Rookie is a kid that just wants to play his absolute best football with his team "Krakens" with a few other issues like mafia, aliens, racism and religions but such is life for a quarterback for a gfl team.

You really can't go wrong with a Scott Sigler book. Sigler books often follow science closely suck you in so you totally believe in the world he is building then something horribly goes amiss. Also one of the most interesting aspects of his stories is just about all of them are set in the same universe although different points in time. I think he has just a few short stories that aren't in the same universe.

The worldbuilding is awesome (science!) and the football writing is stellar. Plus a very cool story. You will want to read the sequels.
