  • Simon Lang would rather he didn’t wind up in the digestive tract of the ship’s gargantuan first mate, but it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility. In reflecting back on the decisions that led him to this point, he conceded that perhaps his grandiose plan to get rich by sailing to China could have used some sober advice, or at the very least, could have been decided upon while sober. Lurking nearby Simon and his grim thoughts however, is an odd-looking ship that may contain an unexpected ally. The clans of Hosokawa and Yamana have just leveled the city of Kyoto in a little starter-civil war known as the “Onin War.” Emerging from this feud comes Kojiro Takeda, a samurai of legend. Great read

The author artfully weaves together the gruesome reality of civil war in Japan and England during the age of steel while simultaneously developing characters with versatile personalities that make them immediately endearing. The camaraderie between the main players left me hoping for another book.

This is one of the best historical fiction books I've read

This is one of the best historical fiction books I've read. Lots of humor, lots of great battles, very good story line. The characters are very well developed and believable. Hope Mr. Donhem writes a lot more books, I will buy them all.

Great Story

I am an avid reader that is always looking for something out of the ordinary. I was recommended this book, and I was not disappointed. As I got further and further into this book, I found myself intrigued by the cultures and story about friendship. I am not much of a “History Buff,” but I truly enjoyed reading something that kept my attention. I would recommend this book to others in the future.

I highly recommend this novel

This novel about a Japanese samurai supplanted from his home and forced to fight in a European society is really enjoyable and captures the differences in eastern and western society. I highly recommend this novel.

If you like Bernard Cornwell novels, this is for you

A real page-turner with blood, guts and gore for those historical fiction fans who want to be placed right in the middle of the battlefield. The attention to historical detail is also excellent.

Intriguing idea; not so good execution

As someone who loves history and historical fiction, I was excited when I found this book. I thought it had an interesting and unique starting point, and I thought it would be a fun read.

However, I sadly found it really disappointing. So much of it just felt forced. While I usually found the battle scenes engaging, the characters themselves, the dialogue...it often didn't click together. There was almost too much emphasis on sarcasm and trying to sound edgy...felt like I was reading a weird mash-up of not-that-funny "Monty Python" skits and an attempting-to-be-serious war novel. Sometimes books can blend different genres together and it works; sometimes, like in the case of this book, it doesn't.

Collision of Cultures

The Rose and the Crane offers massive battle scenes with well thought out military tactics, entertaining and diverse characters and a heavy dose of contemporary humor. I look forward to the sequel, Neno vs. the Ninja!
