Print in book
I love my real books. Love the feel of a book but this one is very difficult. The print is hard to read. Sentences and words too close together. It is the first time I wish I had gotten the kindle edition. I would have been able to manipulate the print.
I cannot honestly write about book since it is too hard to read. Put it down after first chapter.

It was mediocre.
Clearly, the author is good at the mechanics of writing. However, I found the plot predictable and the storyline anti-climactic. I expected more.

An admirable story of historical fiction!
An engaging story about courageous women in the 1900s! The novel, “The Seamstress of New Orleans” will have you wondering; if in the same circumstances, would you have been just as brave? While holding your breath; you will feel hopeful for the two widowed women as they struggle to be independent. The well-scripted words sets you in the heart of New Orleans, including the Mardi Gras celebrations.
While coming together from different circumstances, Constance and Alice bond in friendship when hired to sew a beautiful gown. It is during a time when changes and possibilities are starting to take shape for women. But, when secrets continue, left untold; will everything they worked hard toward, be destroyed?
This is my first Diane C. McPhail novel. I enjoy a good historical fiction, and this tale fit perfectly. McPhail has woven together an admirable story of historical fiction, giving readers a step back in time; along with mystery and suspense. I was completely immersed following Constance and Alice; keeping me in the seams of the pages until finished. I highly recommended this novel for anyone that values a well-researched story!

Beautifully written
This beautifully written book took me back in time to New Orleans in 1900. I could visualize the merriment of Mardi Gras and hear the hustle and bustle of activity at the wharves. This Mardi Gras is not your typical one. For only the second time in New Orleans’ history, there is an all-female Mardi Gras krewe.
Constance and Alice, both with mysteriously missing husbands and both having lost an infant son, are thrown together in this tale of sisterhood. They draw on each other’s talents to create a magnificent ball gown for the Mardi Gras Ball. As each woman closely guards her own secret, they find strength and independence in each other.
McPhail brought the characters to life for me. Afraid their secrets would come out, I could feel the fear and shame each woman experienced. I smiled at the antics of Constance’s young daughters. The supporting characters were just as interesting as were the main characters: the strength of Analee, the compassion of Dr. Birdsong, and the dignified Dorothea Richard.
Filled with intrigue, the book was hard to put down. I loved the unexpected twist at the end. Perfect for the story. Why must daily life get in the way of being lost in such an enjoyable book!
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.

Book Arrived Quickly
Story Review:
The year is 1900 and Alice Butterworth is a newlywed in Chicago. When her husband abruptly disappears, Alice leaves the cold and wintry streets of the Windy City to search for her husband at her mother in laws in Memphis. Unable to find her new mother in law in Memphis, this young and brave seamstress presses on to the milder climate in New Orleans. Alice offers up sewing lessons in exchange for shelter at the local orphanage.
Constance Halstad is young widow of some means from family money. Constance throws herself into her charity work to avoid thinking about her late husband’s gambling debts. Due to the orphanage and a Sadie Hawkins style ball called Les Mysterieuses that happens every Leap Year, Constance and Alice become fast friends.
The Seamstress Of New Orleans is a tale of mystery, intrigue, friendship, and female empowerment. If you love historical fiction as I do, you’ll enjoy this fun read.

Secrets and Sewing
An interesting historical fiction about 1900, including the evolution of women’s rights and a new technology in the sewing machine. Written in a Victorian style, the more special delight was a description of sewing skills and dress design when all was done by hand. Also includes multiple secrets and a New Orleans Mardi Gras.

Predictable
I wanted to like this book. I LOVE everything about the Big Easy and the auther did a good job on her research. However, the book was SO predictible and superficial, that a quarter way through the book I told my husband exactly what would happen. And it did. Except for the extra pages . I did not see that one coming. The book goes from page 314 back to page 283 and repeats. (Hardcover) I didn't like it the first time I read it. I didn't want to do it again. So unfortunately the book was a yawn for me. It was a gift so the only thing I'm out is my time.

Fascinating
I totally enjoyed this read. The characters are well developed and you don't want the story to end. I loved the strength of these women at a time before women had voting rights and were considered chattel. Powerful in its own way.
