Features & Highlights

  • A Storm that will wreck a world threatens Dematr. Only Mari, one of the Mechanics who control all technology through their Guild, has a chance to stop it. She and Mage Alain have survived numerous attempts to kill them and have gained many more followers, but the Storm of chaos, born of centuries of enslavement, grows ever closer. Mari leads an army now. She and Alain must fight together to bind back the Broken Kingdom and build a force strong enough to defeat the might of the Great Guilds. But the Storm has many Servants who seek to preserve or gain personal power or wealth, or fear the New Day that Mari seeks to bring to the world. And Mari knows that victory will mean nothing if the precious knowledge brought long ago to their world is destroyed. In order to save it, Alain and Mari will have to pierce through the heart of their enemies' power and confront once more a place of ancient nightmare.

Great story lousy production

Actually the story is really excellent. I'm on No. 6 now and have enjoyed all of them.

The one star ding (maybe should have been two stars) is because of the terrible job done in producing these books. The worst I've ever seen in fact. They all have grievous errors in printing that sometimes interfere with the story. For example from time to time you come across a string of characters like some bad XML code that mean nothing to the reader. Then there was the case where a whole chapter was run together with the previous chapter -- no break, no headings which added confusion. Looks like no one at the publishers proof reads anything before it goes to print. I guess if you don't go for the audio version you really don't count for much with these folks.

Love this series, but hate the job that was done printing the book

I have loved everything Jack Campbell has put out, he is one of the best authors that are still currently writing new stories. Go Jack Campbell!

The publishers of the book, JABberwocky Literary Agency, has done a horrible job printing the book. Most publishers have a place to submit errors in their printing so that they can correct the errors and put out new revisions. The book lists no revisions, and now I know why. I wasn't able to find anyplace on their webpage to do that. They do have weird errors that distract from the reading, some simple, like spelling "but" a "b ut", or using a non-ASCII character in a word. Even a simple act of starting Chapter 15 in the middle of the page with the words "Chapter Sixteen" in a normal font and just sort of smashed into the page made me read that over a few times before I realized it wasn't part of the story, it was just poorly done.

Fast moving action!

Jack Campbell writes excellent SF! Excellent character development, various types of contrasting characters, one drama filled adventure leading logically to another. Oddly enough the events in the series remind me of current events in the U.S. The battle of good versus evil, maintaining the status quo versus improving living conditions for ALL citizens, saving the planet from the residents abuse, all sounds eerily familiar during the COVID 19 pandemic even though the book was published years ago. The whole series is well worth reading, and rereading.
