Superbly written mystery that will captivate readers with masterful character portrayals

Author Ian Rankin said it all: "A thought-provoking roller coaster". Add a dollop of humor, colorfully written history that captivates the reader, an inevitable mystery track through almost every page, and...(Drum Roll please). Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant "Surrender-Not" Bannerjee. No, it would be wrong of me to say "Move over Holmes and Watson", but maybe there ought to be a Baker Street office for the two lead characters in this novel. And, thematically, the issues portrayed in the British Raj can be kind of retrofitted into today's world. Don't laugh. You might learn more about an opiate from Mr. Mukerjees marvelous novels than the daily newspaper or TV cast. Yeah, it is a story that you cannot put down so be sure and schedule the time. Kudos to author Abir Mukerjee and his literary grand slam.

Endless chase scenes

This 5th in the series feels like it was written by a different author. The long, long chase scenes take up a disproportionate amount of the book in pages as well as theme, and read more like a macho thriller than a crime novel. Disappointing for a reader who enjoyed Mukherjee’s previous books in the series.

The weakest of the series

Enjoyed earlier works in the series but I had real trouble finishing this. Splitting up Wyndham and Bannerjee, the tension drops and much of the plotting seems forced. I think the author needs to take a rest!
