Description

‘Iron kings and strangled queens, battles and betrayals, lies and lust, the curse of the Templars, the doom of a great dynasty – and all of it (well, most of it) straight from the pages of history, and believe me, the Starks and the Lannisters have nothing on the Capets and Plantagenets. Whether you are a history buff or a fantasy fan, Druon's epic will keep you turning pages. This was the original game of thrones’GEORGE R.R. MARTIN ‘Blood-curdling tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and sexual passion’ SUNDAY TIMES ‘Barbaric, sensual, teeming with life, based in wide reading and sound scholarship…among the best historical novels’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT Maurice Druon was a French resistance hero, a Knight of the British Empire and a holder of the Grand Croix de la Légion d'Honneur. He was also a member of the Académie Française and a celebrated novelist, best known for his series of seven historical novels under the title of The Accursed Kings , which were twice adapted for television. A passionate Anglophile, he was a great expert on all things English, including its medieval history, which provides great inspiration for the series.

To tell the honest truth, not a great sequel at all! The beginning of the end of the series

We all no doubt enjoyed the series when it started during the reign of Philip the Fair, and followed the fates of several princesses, several counts, and the family of an Italian Banker. During the events of the first four books, there was murder, intrigue, and great suspense. You never really knew what exactly was going to happen next. The fifth book, She-Wolf, however, was in no way comparable to the previous four books. I honestly felt like a was reading a very boring history book after the fifth or so chapter. So much of this book I feel is filler, and the characters aren't as fleshed out or interesting as before. Not to mention that all that the Capets have left on their side are the imbecilic King Charles, and his English queen sister Isabella who hardly has any good personal qualities at all. Without Philip the Fair, his two oldest sons, or even a good storyline for Robert of Artois, this one is just disappointing.

Evil woman

Yet another marvelous installment in The Accursed Kings series. In this installment, action shifts to England, the court of Edward II and Roger Mortimer. Clearly the stupidest thing Edward II did was not to kill Mortimer and not to dispatch his queen Isabelle, the she wolf of the title. She proves herself in this book very much her father's daughter and her father burned the Templars at the stake after years of torture.

Maurice Druon's series continues to delight. I am sorry that this book marks the fifth in the series and that there are only 2 more books left.
