Description

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Not many hear the song of the golden hare, for it only happens when the males sing to win the heart of the new Golden Queen of the Hares. But the boy and his sister are patient. They see the hares moving and they follow to watch the new queen choose the one with the most beautiful voice. A huntsman and his two hounds are watching, too. Can the children protect the old queen until she makes it safely to her new home on the Island of Golden Hares? Set in a timeless countryside, this original tale touches on themes of natural wonders and the role of human protection. The rich, musical text evokes an old-fashioned fairy-tale style. Unfortunately, the small black words set against dark or busy backgrounds are sometimes difficult to read, and the sentence breaks are sometimes awkward. Using detailed line work and luminescent earth-tone washes, Morris's painterly watercolor illustrations are at their best depicting animals. The composition often focuses on elements not mentioned in the text, revealing a different perspective. Regrettably, the lack of visual context makes the narrative confusing. The foreshadowing is sometimes too subtle, but observant readers will find visual hints in the background. This quiet story might be better appreciated by adults than children.—Amy Seto Musser, Denver Public Library "He loved hares for their twilight dancing wildness, the light in their amber eyes, their long velvet ears, their speed. He loved music for the way it made his heart dance inside him."— from the book Jackie Morris makes a living by drawing, painting and dreaming.xa0She is well known for her illustrations to Ted Hughes's How the Whale Became . Her other titles for Frances Lincoln are, The Snow Leopard , Can You See a Little Bear? , Lord of the Forest , Tell Me a Dragon , The Cat and the Fiddle , The Ice Bear , I am Cat , and East of the Sun, West of the Moon . "She Sang..."

Jackie Morris is one of my favourite illustrators, creating lush and vibrant watercolors that illuminate an array of naturalistic and magical scenes. “The Song of the Golden Hare” is a quintessential picture book from this artist, combining a dreamy story with her beautiful pictures.

The young boy and his sister have a family secret that’s been handed down for generations: that the hares that live on the moors occasionally come together in an attempt to win the affection of the Golden Queen of the Hares, before she makes her journey to the island off the coast where she’ll be safe from hunters and hounds.

It’s a simple story, but a memorable one, and Morris’s illustrations accurately capture the appearance and movement not just of the hares, but other creatures (foxes, owls, hounds) that fill her pages. Every page contains a double-spread depicting the sweeping countryside, with animals in the foreground but also a myriad of wonderful details in the background: houses, trees, people – all of which lends her pictures a real sense of scope and scale.

For example, one page has the hares frolicking in the foreground while the topmost left-hand corner depicts the ominous figure of the hunter – too far away to pose any immediate threat, but growing in size and nearness as the pages go on.

With intricate detail and rich colors, the illustrations alone are worth the price of any Jackie Morris book, but this story of love, danger, and the mysterious lives of animals make “The Song of the Golden Hare” a particular gem.
