Description

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4–&I had just nodded off,/at a quarter past four,/when the Spirit of Christmas/stepped in through my door. So begins this lovely story in which all the delights of the season are presented. Realism and fantasy are satisfyingly paired to bring the mixed-media illustrations of treasured holiday scenes to life. Many of the paintings include bits of lyrics and music from well-known carols. The message is sweet; no matter how fancy one's decorations, no matter how elaborate one's feast, or how many pretty packages wait beneath the tree, &It is love that makes the angels sing. A beautiful and timeless book. –Linda Israelson, Los Angeles Public Library END From Booklist Handsomely illustrated, this Christmas book is bound to be hyped as the perfect seasonal gift. In rhymed verse and a first-person voice, the narrator begins: “I had just nodded off, / at a quarter past four, / when the Spirit of Christmas / stepped in through my door.” The “Spirit” conjures up scenes, symbols, smells, and tastes of the season that are encapsulated in spare, rhythmic words: “Candy cane tongues / and marshmallow mustaches. / Everyone caroling songs of goodwill.” A toy-soldier band, a lion and lamb, snow angels, and Santa Claus are beautifully depicted and lead to the Christmas tree and the message behind the celebration. The Spirit reminds the narrator, “Remember, this all began with a child. / Because it took nothing but love to begin it, / it’s not really Christmas if love isn’t in it.” Tillman’s sentimental sensibility and beautiful artwork ensure that this will become a popular choice at holiday time. Grades K-3. --Julie Cummins “Tillman ( On the Night You Were Born ) expertly swirls together reality and fantasy--the narrator's child delights in the sight of the decorated tree, the lion lies down with the lamb--as is fitting for such a magical night.” ― Shelf Awareness “Handsomely illustrated, this Christmas book is bound to be hyped as the perfect seasonal gift. …Tillman's sentimental sensibility and beautiful artwork ensure that this will become a popular choice at holiday time.” ― Booklist “A beautiful and timeless book.” ― School Library Journal “As the adult speaker of the story nods off in a comfy red chair, the Spirit of Christmas appears, ready to get the narrator in the holiday spirit. What follows is a buoyant, imagistic tribute to the season, as the Spirit lists joys both and intangible, before offering the reminder: ‘Because it took nothing but love to begin it,/ it's not really Christmas if love isn't in it.' Tillman's ethereal illustrations are surreal but captivating.” ― Publishers Weekly “Bestselling author Tillman offers a dreamlike interpretation of the collective spirit that permeates the holiday.” ― Kirkus Reviews “The wonderful colored illustrations convey a sense of joy and peace.” ― Children's Literature “This is one of those rare baby books that should make both skeptics and sentimentalists of all ages happy.” ― Publishers Weekly on On the Night You Were Born “A beautiful tribute to the uniqueness of every child.” ― Kirkus Reviews on On the Night You Were Born “Many parents will welcome this opportunity to tell their children how special and loved they are.” ― Booklist on On the Night You Were Born Nancy Tillman is the author and illustrator of the New York Times best-selling picture book On the Night You Were Born and its companion journal, The Wonder of You: A Book for Celebrating Baby's First Year . Destined to become a classic

I purchased several books hoping to better explain Christmas to my 2 year old. The other books were all classics but this one was the best of the lot. The book had a message that applied to both my 2 year old daughter and my 29 year old daughter. It was beautiful and I found myself tearing up at the end of the book. My daughter loved the pictures and has had me read the book to her quite a few times.

Good book for child not living at your house

This book is nice and has beautiful illustrations, but I noticed that it seems geared toward a child who has either grown and left the house, or a child who has shared custody and doesn't live with the parent reading the book. I say this because the point of the story is that something is missing that is making it not feel like Christmas. They get to the end of the book and realize that the thing missing from Christmas is you (the child). And makes reference to wanting the child under the tree, and no matter how far they roam, to always consider this home. This message seems a little odd for me to read to my child who lives at home with me...however, she apparently thinks nothing of it. She likes this book (she is 3), but it would also be quite nice for older children.

PURE Magic

I purchased this for my son to begin a tradition of gifting a new bedtime book on Christmas Eve each year. His first Christmas was spent in ICU (he was there for 3 long months) and that Christmas he was touch and go. This book's ending, with the spirit of Christmas simply being home with your family; get's me every time I read it! That is the meaning of the holiday, especially for us with my son now thriving.

Has religious component, if that's your thing

As a parent, I like the sweet messages of a couple of Tillman's other books, but my children don't enjoy reading anything by this author (and I believe they'd agree with the reviewer's comments who gave this book one star). It's not clear from the book description, but there's a part of this book towards the end that is too explicitly religious for our family. We love the holiday but celebrate it in a more secular fashion, as do many others, so I thought it might be helpful to let others know about this component to the book. I ended up returning it because the religious text wasn't for us.

Can you find the spirit?

After reading other reviews I purchased this book and am now planning on ordering a few more for gifts. This book is perfect for our family (5 year old daughter) as we are spiritual (Christian base) but not practicing. The book gives an idea to children and a reminder to adults that Christmas isn't just about the gifts, lights, and jingle bells but something more. My daughter especially likes to look for the "spirit" on each page. Can't go wrong with this one!

The most beautiful children's Christmas book ever!

Nancy Tillman has created the most beautiful Christmas book ever! I purchased one for my little niece and I look forward to reading it to her at Christmastime.

This book is an absolute MUST for everyone's library! I would suggest that you buy one for someone you love AND buy one for the gift giving that is available in all of our cities for the underprivileged children.

The Spirit of Christmas has messages that will warm your heart. Sure, the children definitely "win" by having this book read to them, or by reading it themselves, but as an adult, you will find your spirit deeply touched by these words. Heck, you may even want to buy a copy for an adult who still has that "child-like" spirit -- I'm sure they'll love it too.

Wonderful Christmas Story for Children and Adults!

We love Nancy Tillman's books so when I saw this one out, I had to get it. All of her stories are so magical and beautiful and The Spirit of Christmas is no exception. If possible, it adds even more magic to the Christmas season. We read this story for many nights before Christmas and my twins just love it. There are always nice pictures for them to look at too. The board book wasn't available at the time I purchased it, which I prefer for my 2 year olds, but we seemed to do okay with the hardcover version. It's an absolutely beautiful story for children and adults alike. I would highly recommend adding this one to your child's library.

An Heirloom Book...

I bought this book for my Dad because it tears me up when I read it! Such a touching story about how Christmas is really about the people we share it with and how as children grow its not quite the same! I can't read it without getting misty eyed! It also has beautiful illustrations!

beautiful Christmas memory

this book can help you make special Christmas memories for your children/grandchildren. I purchased another book by this author for my grandson last Christmas called "The Night You Were Born". It was such a lovely book when I saw this one I had to have it for William our 2 year old grandson. He is very busy this year it is hard to get him to sit to listen now but it will be available when he gets older for his parents to read to him. The story is timeless and the illustrations are gorgeous works of art. Literacy is so important please buy this book for a child you care about or donate one to your library.

The sweetest Christmas book

I love this book, my family reads it during the Christmas season every year and I can’t get through it without crying. One of the things I like about this book is that it keeps to the true meaning of Christmas without being a nativity story. In December, we read a Christmas book every night, I have several different versions of the nativity story and plenty of Santa stories, but it also nice to have sentimental books like these. This book is also my go-to book to give as a thoughtful gift to any family that celebrates Christmas.
