Description

From Publishers Weekly The 14th novel in Laurens's bestselling Cynster series, set amid the glittering ton of early 19th-century England, does little more than preserve the family line. Charlie Morwellan, eighth earl of Meredith, admits it is time, with the "matchmakers perennially salivating," to shackle himself to a suitable, docile countess. But he swears he will never (as his father did, bringing the family to the brink of ruin) allow love to control him. He sets his sights on quiet Sarah Conningham, a childhood acquaintance, who has made up her mind, despite her family's protests, to settle only for a genuine love match. Charlie stubbornly tries to remain aloof—even as Sarah tries to compel him to admit his love for her. Meanwhile, a nefarious (and anonymous) land speculator has his sights on Sarah's land (where she operates a village orphanage) and manages to interpose himself between the couple. The plot moves briskly but with little tension, and the author introduces a variety of intriguing side characters (many of whom, like Devil Cynster, will be familiar to fans), only to whisk them quickly offstage. While the love scenes sizzle, Charlie and Sarah dispatch their conflict with little fanfare, and the villain's motives and actions are unconvincing. (Feb.) From Booklist The Earl of Meredith has decided it is finally time to marry. Charlie has even found the perfect candidate for his future wife: Sarah Conningham. Now he has to find some way to convince her to go along with his plan. Although she has secretly been infatuated with Charlie for years, Sarah refuses to marry for anything less than love. So, she gives Charlie two weeks to prove that they belong together. Charlie intends to simply seduce Sarah, but much to his surprise, he finds himself falling in love with her instead! Laurens expertly spices up the passion-rich plot with danger and intrigue, making the fourteenth in her best-selling Cynster series sinfully sexy and deliciously irresistible. From AudioFile This steamy nineteenth-century romance pairs rich Charlie Morwellan, the eighth earl of Meredith, with Sarah Conningham, whose family lands are just to the north. Sarah gives Charlie two weeks to prove hes perfect for her--what ensues is seduction by night and feigned distant interaction by day. The abridgment seems awkward. Cutting out much of the daytime interplay, it emphasizes Sarahs development into a sexually aware woman. Elizabeth Sastre reads the sex scenes with practiced ease but without tension or emotion. But as soon as Sarah consents to marriage, the sex scenes abruptly stop. A subplot, smoothly developed through Sastres expert pacing and intonation, adds some mystery to the story. Features & Highlights

  • For no gentleman is this more true than Charles Morwellan, the eighth Earl of Meredith. Although he's seen the many successful unions of his Cynster connections, he has also watched his father's obsessions nearly destroy their family and fortune, a mistake Charles will not repeat. But as Lord Meredith he must marry, so he offers for Sarah, the daughter of his neighbors Lord and Lady Conningham. She's intelligent enough to run his social life, beautiful enough to grace his arm, and old enough to know the value of his offer.
  • For most young ladies of the
  • ton
  • , the right marriage is the culmination of years of training, perfect deportment, and intricate plans that would impress a general. But as a lady of independent means with a life of her own, Sarah is unwilling to wed unless it is for unbounded love.
  • But Charles always gets what he wants. He convinces Sarah to give him two weeks to win her; if he succeeds, they will marry immediately. And so begins an intense courtship. By day, Charles and Sarah are models of decorum indulging in innocuous walks, polite conversation, sedate waltzes. Each night they steal away to the lush, moonlit gardens, where sensual embraces turn to searing kisses, and much, much more. Both are swept away on a tide of passion and feeling neither can resist.
  • And yet, after the wedding, despite nights of insatiable passion, Charles remains aloof, as if the near-sinful sweetness of their nights exists only in a dream. Sarah battles to prove that true love is a force that can't be contained, a gift worth fighting for, but it's only when she's engulfed in a web of increasingly dangerous incidents that Charles discovers how much he's willing to surrender to protect . . . the taste of innocence.

so disappointing!!

generally love Stephanie Laurens - but this book was really, really boring! the two main characters are barely even one-dimensional. She likes visiting her orphanage once a week, he likes making cautious investments, they both like having sex with one another, never have anything interesting to say to one another, and except for a tedious subplot about land speculation, that's about it. They both fall in love really early on, but it takes forever for him to recognize the fact - how dramatic! Of course, it is possible that the last 25% of the book is awesome -- but it was all I could do to get through the first three quarters of it.

About 30% Too Long

And it's not too long because the plot goes on. Rather, it's because it needs editing. When the author wants to convey strong emotions, she creates sentences like this (picked at random): "As it had transpired, she'd wanted to follow a sensual path he hadn't known existed, one that had demanded a great deal from him-yet part of the glory, much of the challenge, had been to give her what she'd wanted, to lavish on her whatever pleasures she wished, to make whatever sensual sacrifices that called for." Yes, that's a "sentence" of 56 nonsense words-8 parenthetical phrases-that ends on a preposition. Sentences like that do not add to the meaning of the story or help my understanding. It's just filler that I resent having to read in order to get back to sentences that actually have meaning and advance the story. And there were A LOT of those kinds of sentences. Also, redundant words right next to each other, e.g., "slowly lingered" (does one ever linger quickly?). That frustration aside, the other 70% of the book was a decent story with characters I liked well enough. If you decided to read the book, I recommend skimming over the parenthetical-packed nonsense sentences.

Good Addition to the Cynster Series

My rating: 3.5 stars, rounded down to 3 stars -- mostly because I got so irritated at the H's behavior.

This book is well-written, because Stephanie Laurens is a talented writer. I read it several years ago, but recently decided to re-read the entire Cynster series, since I had enjoyed them all. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I still like this book -- maybe not quite as much as the first read, but I still liked it a lot.

Charlie was OK, but it bothered me that he was so determined to never show his love for Sarah. He hurt her repeatedly with his behavior, but was sure that letting himself love her fully would make him irresponsible. He finally realized how wrong he was, but not until he had hurt Sarah many times. I won't give spoilers, but his poor treatment of her could have resulted in tragic consequences, too.

I liked Sarah well enough, but I wanted her to tell Charlie off for the way he treated her. She was just sure that confronting him would make him worse, so she just kept enduring the pain he caused.

It also seemed like Charlie and Sarah were mostly in lust, not love, for a large part of the book.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Pale imitation of s Cynster romance and hero. Just re-read Devil's Bride.

Not worthy of Stephanie Laurens book or a Cynster hero.

Devil’s Bride is the standard by which all Cynster romances are measured, and this is a pale imitation. Honestly, just read one of the first seven or so for a better hero.

PLOT:
Charlie, the hero, is in need of a wife, and like all the heroes in the series once he settles on who he wants he will stop at nothing to get her. He picks Sarah, a neighbor he’s known all his life, as much for her appropriateness as a Countess as for the fact he suspects she loves him. He makes his wish known, but she lays down the law that she wants a passionate marriage rather than a standard, grade B MOC. She wants to get to know him, before she will agree to marriage.

Fine. I doubt Sarah meant that they would have rampant groping sessions then sex as part of the “Getting to Know You” part of the courtship. I imagine she was talking about emotions rather than hormones.

However, Charlie essentially seduces her with sex. Lots of sex. Lots. Every other scene. They meet at the summer house for a long grope session. Then it’s a trip to the orphanage that the worthy and boring heroine runs. More groping. Then tea with the vicar. Then anticipating the vows a lot then an outing to….zzzzzz.

Charlie is a lying skunk as he has no intention of having a passionate marriage other than after the lights are out. He doesn’t want his emotions to get the better of him as …dun dun dunnnnnn,… too many feelings lead to problems or something. He has this big bad reason for keeping his new bride cruelly at an emotional distance because of his father. No, he was not besotted with a mistress and broke the H’s mother’s heart. He didn’t have any bastards. He didn’t hate his son for insert reason number 25.
SPOILER
Nope. SL finally pins it down. Their father loved his family so much he put their finances at risk. All was not lost as the Super-sister from a previous book saved the fortunes. Yawn. Really? Your daddy loved you? End spoiler)]

SL is a great writer, and it’s disturbing to leave such a low rating. I am probably being harsher than I should, but the push/pull of the heroine and hero has been done so much better by this same author this is just a cheap copy.

There is a subplot where some evil minion are trying to get the orphanage that’s okay.

The narration was well done.

Good storyline

I enjoyed the story. I would recommend this book to others who enjoy historical romance novels. Could do without the romantic details.
