Page-turner!

This is the first book I ‘ve read from Matthew Reilley. Historical Fiction and suspense at its best. The Tournament turned out to be a page-turner... thought-provoking, Inspirational and instructional. Fascinating!!!

Such a good read

I purchased this book in audio-book format first and absolutely loved it, so much so that I tracked it down and ordered a copy because apparently it wasn't printed in the U.S. What a shame, U.S. readers need to know about this! The story is different than his Ancient Wonders series with Jack West but it is just as fast paced and takes us back through history to a young (soon to be Queen) )Elizabeth. I would definitely recommend this book to any Matthew Reilly fan, or historical fiction fan.

Easy read.

I like Matthew Reily. I have read many, many of his books. This kept the terse writing while he changed his protagonist's sex. You can see Scarecrow and Jack still but even more cunning instead of cutting. More original without destroying half the world to have the heroine win.

Just like Matthew Reilly's "Great Zoo of China"

Just like Matthew Reilly's "Great Zoo of China", "The Tournament" engages the reader with the world of young Queen Elizabeth 1.

What an intriguing story !
Thank you GoodReads for the book.

Step Back in Time

Matthew Reilly took a surprising turn in this book in comparison to his other works that I have read. The Tournament is a historical mystery and unlike his others stays fully in the past.
The Tournament is based off of a time in Queen Elizabeth I childhood that is not well known and has been speculated over by historians and authors alike. In this telling she is brought on a journey to the Ottoman Empire to witness a chess tournament of the worlds greatest players. Unlike almost all of Reilly's other works, it is not so action packed that the characters cannot catch their breaths. It is thoughtful and strategic like a chess game.
I really enjoyed this book! It was something different and refreshing from his normal style. I am looking forward to having this in my collection.

Not a 10 thats for sure

Unlike many other books this one is set in a whole different time period way in the past. I have come to love his books and the details that go into them. However, this was the first one that I thought was very dry for the first quarter of the book. I had to resist putting it down. My opinion is that it look way to long to discover the direction the book was going to go and why. Only 2 more to read until I'm done with this author but this is by far the worst one I've read.

A Great Mystery

I was very intrigued by the premise and was not disappointed. It is told from the perspective of Queen Elizabeth as she accompanies her teacher on a trip to watch a grand chess tournament. While there, a cardinal is murdered. While the chess tournament commences, Elizabeth's teacher is tasked with finding the culprit. With no lack of suspects, Reilly gives the reader a brilliant tale of intrigue and even a little conspiracy. The way he goes about giving the reader the clues and entangles the mystery is done extremely well. Many of the characters were very much living beings and the way Reilly writes them it is as if he knew them personally in some past life. I enjoyed this one a great deal. I liked everything but the end, as I found it a little weak after the murderer was revealed.
