Description

"David Limbaugh's The True Jesus is a worthy successor to his bestselling book The Emmaus Code. The latter exposed a generation to how the Old Testament reveals Christ. Now The True Jesus directs attention to the Jesus of the Gospels, in His full humanity and deity. Limbaugh's presentation is tactical, yet forthright. He carefully blends the four portraits of Jesus in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John into a single streamlined, coherent narrative, free from academic distraction and jargon. The result is that the Gospels are allowed to speak for themselves. If you've wondered whether media portrayals of Jesus are dishonest, or found reading four seemingly disparate versions of the life of Jesus a little bewildering, or if you know nothing about Jesus at all, The True Jesus is precisely what you need." --Dr. Michael S. Heiser, Scholar-in-Residence, Faithlife / Logos Bible Software, author of The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible, and host of the Naked Bible Podcast "In The True Jesus , the Son of God of the Gospels truly comes alive for readers. This is the Case for Christ from the life of Jesus Himself--and Limbaugh tells it in a way that will inspire you to read and study the Gospels like never before." --Lee Strobel, bestselling author of The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith "How could an ancient carpenter from the tiny town of Nazareth be the most influential human being to ever walk the earth? Who was Jesus and how does His life affect yours? Like a captivating tour guide, David Limbaugh leads you through the brilliant and sacrificial life of Jesus of Nazareth and inspires you to connect your life with the Savior--the true Jesus. There are few books better about life's most important topic!" --Frank Turek, founder and president of www.CrossExamined.org "David Limbaugh strikes again. The True Jesus is a brilliant, must-read book on the real Jesus of Scripture destined to be another bestseller. If you have faith, it will deepen it; if you don't, you just might change your mind after reading it." --Sean Hannity, host of The Sean Hannity Show and Fox News Channel's Hannity David Limbaugh is a lawyer, nationally syndicated columnist, political commentator, and the author of ten bestsellers, including Jesus on Trial , The Emmaus Code , The True Jesus , and Jesus is Risen . The brother of radio host Rush Limbaugh, he lives in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with his wife and children. Follow him on Twitter: @DavidLimbaugh.

The True Jesus is aptly titled

The meat of this book is essentially a chronological overview of the life of Jesus based on the New Testament gospels. The book presents this material by "harmonizing" the accounts of the four gospels. For example, an event which is described in three of the gospels would be presented together in one section. The author would then try to break down what's really going on and also bring in the views of others.

What I liked:
1. Theologically rock solid.
2. The author is extremely even handed and careful in his interpretations.
3. The other scholars, writers, and pastors he cites (as far as I'm familiar) are all highly respected.
4. He treats all scholarly viewpoints with great respect.
5. Although the book appears to be primarily from an evangelical perspective - he even cites Catholic and Lutheran opinion.
6. The structure of going chronologically vignette to vignette.

Where it could use improvement:
1. I felt some sections did not have enough actual bible text quoted - forcing the reader to reach for his bible (if they have one).
2. I felt sometimes the author would go down rabbit trails discussing various theological positions (although in general this is a strength)
3. The book is described as 256 pages - it's really 353 or about 450 total with notes etc. Could this be too much for the casual seeker?

To summarize, I enjoyed this book and author helped me to see some things more clearly. I would definitely recommend this book, however, I'm not sure if it's the first book I'd offer to the casual seeker. For those really trying to understand Jesus from a true theological perspective, this book definitely succeeds.

Not for the advanced Christian, but good

While this is a fine piece of research, it is not for the theologian or advanced student. Taking nothing away from the author's enthusiasm, hard work and accuracy, the Christian apologist will learn nothing new here. The book draws heavily on the work of others and I recommended it for nominal Christians, mainstream Bible study students, ordinary churchgoers, skeptics, and beginners.

Just another interpretation

This book is flawed before it ever begins, for it uses the bible as its source material which is but a collection of writings put together by men; not provided by a god. They don't even know who the true identities of the bible's Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are; these writers who perpetuated oral myths passed on through the decades before them. Why did the clerics pick these particular writings for inclusion in the bible and discard others? So they could back up the concepts they wanted to use; in order to dupe their followers.

Long ago 90% of the earth believed in the Olympian gods. Now 90% of the earth believes in the Jewish god. But wait, are there two gods? Father and Son? Or three. Father, Son, and Spirit. It was all made up by man. Human beings can be made to believe anything. They could not exist without a god. It's going to take an ET civilization to come down and set them straight.

What this book does is what every one the thousands of religious sects does: interpret the same writings to suit themselves.

Building a firm foundation of Christian Books

This the third of the David Limbaugh series on Jesus. I have read and reread each; and have given copies away as gifts, because they help in developing greater knowledge and understanding of Jesus and the Bible. They are part of a select group of books to supplement the Bible. e.g. C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, Knowing GOD by J I Packer and Packer's Evangelism and the Sovereignty of GOD, et al

Plodding rehash of the scholarship of others.

I wanted to like it, but it was plodding and the plodding got worse as the book progressed. The last third included larger and larger quotes of others' scholarship to which Limbaugh appended commentary that was simply a repeat of what the quote provided.. I was disappointed.

DISCOVERING THE DIVINITY OF JESUS

Mr. Limbaugh has done a wonderful job of presenting Jesus of the Scriptures to us as church goers or not. There s so much to present the character & nature of Jesus that we can easily miss. e catches that in his writing. God bless his research & obviously his prayers.

Want to see the Gospel message as one?

The true Jesus! Who is he? David takes the Gospels and does something badly needed: Gives us a "primer" on how to take all that is given and gives a wonderful perspective when you want to see these books as one! Not only should the Gospels be read and studied separately, but we need to see as one document!
What a blessing!
