Description

Many of Eric Carle's books begin with a small creature being born just as a great yellow sun rises. This time the hero is a firefly, and the inimitably Carle-ish cut-paper orange-and-yellow sun is setting. The firefly buzzes off in search of companionship, but keeps following other lights by mistake--a candle, a flashlight, a lantern--and these in turn are all leading in the direction of a fireworks display. Finally, the lonely firefly finds the friends it is seeking--a dozen or more other fireflies. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the firefly's new group of friends start to flash (from tiny yellow bulbs embedded in the book) as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr From Publishers Weekly With characteristic simplicity-and the now expected visual "surprise" at book's end-Carle delivers another heartwarming tale about a diminutive creature on a quest. In the author/artist's words, his latest story "is about belonging." As the sun sets, a firefly is born: "It stretched its wings and flew off into the darkening sky." Searching for other fireflies, the lonely little guy flies hopefully toward other lights (a bulb in a window, a candle, a flashlight, the shining eyes of an owl, car headlights, fireworks), only to discover that they are not what he is looking for. Youngsters will be as tickled as the no-longer-lonely firefly to find, on the last spread, "a group of fireflies, flashing their lights"-with the help of replaceable batteries (final version not seen by PW). Carle's richly hued, collage-like art and gentle text will be comfortingly familiar to his numerous young devotees. Ages 4-up. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 1?This final addition to the "Very Quartet" is classic Carle in both story and illustrations. It's a natural continuation of his other stories about insects that teach young readers universal emotions, needs, and a variety of other concepts. The illustrations help the story unfold, as readers see a newborn firefly at the end of its first day. It searches for companionship, mistaking a lightbulb; candle; flashlight; lantern; dog, cat, and owl eyes; headlights; and fireworks for its own kind. Finally, it discovers a group of fireflies, giving him the gift of companionship. There's also evidence of a sublayer of the belonging theme here, as a human family is portrayed discovering the fireworks display. The illustrations are painted cut-paper collages, designed to draw the eye to the page. This is a compelling accomplishment that will leave readers and listeners alike wishing Carle would turn the quartet into a quintet. A guaranteed winner as a read-aloud or read-alone.?Christina Dorr, Calcium Primary School, NYCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Ages 3^-6. Born one evening as the sun sets, a little firefly stretches its wings and goes off looking for others of its kind. Attracted by the lights, it flies toward a candle, a flashlight, a lantern, and finally a sky full of fireworks, only to be disappointed. When everything quiets down, though, other fireflies come out and flash their lights. The little firefly isn't lonely anymore. Although the text may not be as strong as in Carle's best picture books, its simplicity and its depiction of feeling lonely and finding one's place in a group will appeal to preschoolers. As the flap copy says, " The Very Lonely Firefly is about belonging ." The illustrations, collages of painted papers, make strong visual statements in the artist's signature style. A sparkler!

This is an information book about a lonely firefly searching for other fireflies. The search leads him to other sources of light such as light, candle, and flashlight. The text may be a little weak but that is what gives you time to add science discussion or what we feel like when we are feeling lonely. The last page is the best and sparks in those little eyes makes it all worthwhile!

It's ok... not his best story

My daughter LOVES Eric Carle's books. They are consistently her favorites ones to read. I bought this for her for Christmas. It's now February and she just started requesting this at bedtime. She likes the lights at the end. I think the story would have been better without the little dialogues from the characters. I understood what they were talking about, but I didn't think it was relevant to the actual story. So I don't read them anymore.

As an adult, I would have to say this is definitely not Carle's best work. The dark illustrations are not typical of his other books (but I understand why they have to be dark - it's a firefly at night - duh) and some of the characters are angry looking (dogs and cats fighting).

So I gave this a 3 out of 5. I wouldn't say don't buy it, but I would say don't go out of your way. Go out of your way for the other Carle books.

Work of Art!

It's a work of art! All of Earl Carle's books are lovely to look at and easy to read. It's a pure visual delight for the kids when they get to the last, lit up page in the hardcover version. Really nice and makes a good gift!

Can't turn the lights off

I have no "black button" on the inside cover to shut off the lights. They don't turn off. When the book is closed tight, you can see them flashing inside.

The story and artwork are great, but I can't imagine those batteries will last longer than a week.

The book is adorable. My grandson loves Eric Carle books-so he loves the illustrations in this book as well. On the last page the lightening bugs light up, which we both loved! It's a fun bedtime story to read in the dark by flashlight.

Choking Hazard!

We received this book as a gift and although my 14 month old son really enjoys this book I was horrified this evening I walked into his room and found the small watch batteries on the floor of his room! I can't believe the publishers would put these small batteries in a baby book. They are clearly a choking hazards. I plan to throw away the batteries and will not be replacing them. Terrible, dangerous design!

Another cracker from Eric Carle

I'm not sure how he does, but Eric Carle totally understands kids, and is clearly a very smart writer and person. This book has appealed massively to my son at different points in time, for different reasons: for the flashing fireflies on the last page when he was less than an year-old, for the objects (especially the different kinds of lights) in the middle of his second year, and for the story as a whole in his third year. The book has all the components of a clever construct: a simple hook, repetition, bright colours and vivid pictures, and a simple story. Strongly recommend.

I knew she would as they have been a classroom favorite of my students for years

OH My Goodness! I purchased these for my pre-school age granddaughter. She just loves them . I knew she would as they have been a classroom favorite of my students for years. I bought several but the click beetle is her favorite. I may be partial as I have been an Eric Carle fan for years. You will love the art. Very bright and colorful. You can't go wrong with these books.

defective

This would be a cute book, but I received defective copies twice. Despite changing the batteries myself, the book still did not work. (The light-up page does not light up.) I requested an exchange after my first order, but the replacement book Amazon sent me also did not work! So just be prepared for the possibility that you will receive defective merchandise.
